This indicator depicts the capacity of coastal habitats to migrate to adjacent lowlands in order to sustain biodiversity and natural services under increasing inundation from sea-level rise. It is based on the physical and condition characteristics of current tidal complexes, their predicted migration space, and surrounding buffer areas. The Blueprint 2021 Development Process is a final report that explains in detail how the Conservation Blueprint was created. It first provides an overview of the South Atlantic Blueprint framework, then combines the metadata available on the Conservation Planning Atlas for all indicators, ecosystem integrity scores, hubs and corridors, and final Blueprint priorities. It is intended to serve as a comprehensive guide to the South Atlantic Blueprint objectives, data sources, and methodology that could enable an interested reader to reproduce the Blueprint independently.
Lists of species of greatest conservation need (SGCN) are powerful tools for revealing shared conservation priorities, enhancing collaboration, and securing additional conservation funding. In the northeastern US, such a list has served as a foundation for multi-state collaborations for conservation implementation.States in the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA) region have identified 6,682 SGCN in their wildlife action plans. Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) ecosystems in the southeastern United States have declined substantially from an estimated 92 million acres in the pre-Columbian time period to 4.3 million acres at present, largely due to agricultural conversion, urbanization and replacement by other forest types, notably loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). The open landscape character of longleaf pine ecosystems is characterized by a lower carbon stocking and prairie-like understory dominated by grasses and low woody vegetation .
