Smelter slag containing copper and other trace elements is widespread in riverbed sediment of the upper Columbia River (UCR) of the United States. To evaluate potential risk to aquatic life concentrations of copper and other trace elements were measured in shallow pore-water and in river water samples collected near the sediment-water interface. Samples were collected using an in-situ pore-water profiler to collect a suite of four water samples from above, at, and below the sediment-water interface at each of 29 sampling locations; pore-water collected with a drive-point sampler at 10 additional locations; and Stabilized Liquid Membrane Device samplers (SLMDs) to allow determination of trace-element concentrations...
This study evaluated the relations between algal, invertebrate, and fish assemblages and physical environmental characteristics of streams at the reach, segment, and watershed scale in agricultural settings in the Midwest. The 86 stream sites selected for study were in predominantly agricultural watersheds sampled as part of the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment Program. Species abundance and over 130 biological metrics were used to determine which aspects of the assemblages were most sensitive to change at the three spatial scales. Digital orthophotograph-based riparian land use/land cover was used for analyses of riparian conditions at the reach and segment scales. The percentage area...
The Illinois Water-Quality Information Mapping Tool provides access to water-quality information collected and distributed by the Illinois EPA. This information fulfills requirements identified in the Federal Clean Water Act. Users of the Mapping Tool can locate, create, and print maps of any area within Illinois providing lake and stream information as well as geographic reference information (streets, towns, highways, etc). This site was developed through a cooperative effort between Illinois EPA and the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Stormwater Action Monitoring (SAM) is a collaborative monitoring program between western Washington municipal stormwater permittees, state and federal agencies. SAM’s role is to use the results of regional monitoring and focused studies to inform policy decisions and identify effective strategies to improve stormwater management in the Puget Sound region. The SAM program includes status and trends monitoring of water quality, stream biota (macroinvertebrates, algae), and stream habitat to measure whether conditions are getting better or worse and identify patterns in healthy and impaired Puget Lowland streams. To meet this objective, a framework of fundamental geospatial data was required to develop physical and...

This digital database is the product of collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey, the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research Potsdam, Foothill College GeoSpatial Technology Certificate Program, and the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska. The primary goal for creating this digital database is to enhance current estimates of organic carbon stored in deep permafrost, in particular Late Pleistocene syngenetic ice-rich loess permafrost deposits, called Yedoma. This deposit is vulnerable to thermokarst and erosion due to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. The original paper maps were issued by the Department of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation or its predecessor the...

Nitrate contamination of groundwater is widespread and persistent in the shallow surficial aquifer of northwestern Whatcom County where dairy farming and forage production is a primary land-use activity. Application of dairy manure to cropland is intended to provide nutrients for crop growth and improve soil quality with the ideal goal to match the rate of nutrient application to that rate of nutrient removal by the crop. A study to test an alternate strategy for scheduling manure application to fields based on hydrologic properties of specific soils and fields, measurements of manure and soil parameters, and current and forecasted precipitation for the three days immediately following manure application is being...
NEED FOR STUDY: Water-resource planning and water-quality assessment require a nationwide data base with standardized information. Sediment concentrations and discharges in rivers and streams need to be monitored and defined to achieve this goal. OBJECTIVES: To provide a national sediment data base for use in Federal programs and Federal management of interstate waters. The State also needs spatial and temporal averages and trends of sediment concentration, sediment discharge, and particle-size distribution of sediment being transported in the rivers and streams for planning and action programs.
This data release contains spatial data associated the sedimentation survey conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey cfor the Lago La Plata, Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, during March and April 2015 to provide up-to-date information about the relation of pool elevation and storage volume in the reservoir. The survey was conducted in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority. A total of 264 navigation lines were surveyed, using a depth sounding device coupled to a global positioning system. The results of the survey were used to prepare a bathymetric map showing the reservoir bottom referenced with respect to the spillway elevation.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is providing an online map of water-table altitude contours in the upper glacial and Magothy aquifers on Long Island, New York, April-May 2013. USGS serves this map and geospatial data as a REST Open Map Service (as well as HTTP, JSON, KML, and shapefile), so end-users can use the map and data on mobile and web clients. A companion report, U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3326 (Como and others, 2015; http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/sim3326) further describes data collection and map preparation and presents 68x22 in. PDF versions, 4 sheets, scale 1:125,000. This polyline shapefile consists of digital contours that represent the water table altitude in the upper...

Concentrations, spatial and temporal variations, and fluxes of nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment were determined for 16 streams in the Illinois River basin, Illinois from October 1996 through September 2000. Water samples were collected through the National Water-Quality Assessment's Lower Illinois River Basin (LIRB) and Upper Illinois River Basin (UIRB) Study Units on a monthly to weekly frequency from watersheds representing predominantly agricultural and urban land, as well as areas of mixed land-use. Streams in agricultural watersheds had high concentrations and fluxes of nitrate nitrogen, whereas streams in predominantly urban watersheds had high concentrations (above background levels) of ammonia...

The composition, distribution and abundance of 74 taxa of benthic invertebrates collected from snags and woody debris at sites in the Wapsipinicon, Cedar, Iowa and Skunk River basins were used to assess the effects of intensive agriculture in the Eastern Iowa Basins study unit of the NAWQA Program. Two-way indicator species analysis was used to define four groups of sites based upon the distribution and abundance of taxa; detrended correspondence analysis was used to identify relations in the structure of the invertebrate assemblages and the correspondence of taxa and sites in the groups to physical and chemical gradients using habitat, hydrologic and water-quality data. Responses of these assemblages were evaluated...
