This topobathymetric digital elevation model (TBDEM) mosaic represents the topography and bathymetry for the Milwaukee River Estuary in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and adjacent terrestrial and Lake Michigan nearshore coastal areas. The TBDEM was produced in support of modeling and for developing a physical habitat framework to help with understanding the effects from multidirectional currents and seiche effects associated with the mixing of river flows with Lake Michigan backwater. The TBDEM mosaic is built off existing terrestrial, nearshore, and estuary frameworks developed for other areas around the Great Lakes and the Milwaukee River Harbor. Ranging from 2008-2015, land elevations derived from lidar and historic topographic...
Low-altitude (80-100 meters above ground level) digital images were obtained from a camera mounted on a 3DR Solo quadcopter, a small unmanned aerial system (UAS), along the Lake Ontario shoreline in New York during July 2017. These data were collected to document and monitor effects of high lake levels, including shoreline erosion, inundation, and property damage in the vicinity of Sodus Bay, New York. This data release includes images tagged with locations determined from the UAS GPS; tables with updated estimates of camera positions and attitudes based on the photogrammetric reconstruction; tables listing locations of the base stations, ground control points, and transect points; geolocated, RGB-colored point...
In cooperation with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, the U.S. Geological Survey developed a StreamStats web application (https://water.usgs.gov/osw/streamstats/) that provides analytical tools useful for water-resources planning and management (Ries and others, 2017). This data set presents the lidar-derived flow direction, flow accumulation, streamline, and hydro-enforced digital elevation model raster data used for analysis in StreamStats. Rasters are included for each of the following hydrologic unit codes (HUCs): 03040101, 03040102, 03040103, 03040104, 03040105, 03040201, 03040202, 03040203, 03040204, 03040205, 03040206, 03040207, 03040208, 03050101, 03050102, 03050103, 03050104, 03050105, 03050106,...
Aerial photography surveys during and after the 2018 eruption of Veniaminof Volcano, Alaska were conducted to track the evolution of the lava flow field, active volcanic vent, and glacial ice loss from the eruption. Imagery from two surveys was processed with structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetric methods to derive the digital elevation models (DEMs) and orthophotos in this data release. The datasets cover the active volcanic cone and intracaldera ice cap, which both show significant topographic and groundcover change between surveys, and relative to previous topographic reference data, due to the 2018 eruption and variable snow and ice cover. A syn-eruption survey on September 26, 2018 was conducted by the...

La Soufrière Volcano is a 1,220 m high stratovolcano that occupies the northern half of the island of St. Vincent, Lesser Antilles, Eastern Caribbean. It has a long history of explosive and sometimes devastating eruptions. Beginning in December 2020 and ending in April 2021, La Soufrière Volcano produced a Volcano Explosivity Index (VEI) 4 eruption that greatly impacted the landscape, communities, and infrastructure on the island of St. Vincent. The eruption produced intense ash plumes, heavy ashfall, and pyroclastic flows down several river valleys. During and following the eruption, destructive lahars (volcanic mudflows) impacted rivers valleys and coastal communities for months. The USGS-USAID Volcano Disaster...
Development of a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) of the pre-Glen Canyon Dam topography in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Utah and Arizona was initiated to assist the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in its Lake Powell coring program in the fall of 2018 (https://www.usgs.gov/centers/ut-water/science/lake-powell-coring). Topographic surveys of Glen Canyon were commissioned by the Bureau of Reclamation during the planning stages for Lake Powell as part of the Colorado River Storage Project (S. 500, 1956). The Colorado River arm was surveyed by Alster and Associates, Inc. in 1958 and 1959 at a contour interval of 10-feet from the river surface at the future dam site through where the 3,750-foot contour...

Mount Adams, also known by the Native American names "Klickitat" or "Pahto", is a 3,742 meter-tall (12,278 feet) stratovolcano located 53 km (33 miles) north of the Columbia river straddling the borders of Skamania County, Yakima County and the Yakama Nation Reservation. Mount Adams lies in the middle of the Mount Adams volcanic field—a 1,250 square kilometer area (about 480 square miles) comprising at least 120, mostly basaltic volcanoes that form spatter and scoria cones, shield volcanoes, and some extensive lava flows. The volcanic field has been active for at least the past one million years. Mount Adams was active from about 520,000 to about 1,000 years ago and has erupted mostly andesite. Eruptions have occurred...

The lateral blast, debris avalanche, and lahars of the May 18th, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens, Washington, dramatically altered the surrounding landscape. Lava domes were extruded during the subsequent eruptive periods of 1980-1986 and 2004-2008. During 2017, U.S. Forest Service contracted the acquisitions of airborne lidar surveys of Mount St. Helens and upper North Fork Toutle River basin, part of a larger 2017-2018 survey of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The U.S. Geological Survey combined and reprojected 81 raster datasets, provided by the U.S. Forest Service in October 2018, into a single digital elevation model (DEM) of the ground surface, including beneath forest cover (that is, 'bare earth')....

To assess the current topography of tidal marsh at the study sites we conducted survey-grade global positioning system (GPS) surveys between 2009 and 2014 using a Leica RX1200 Real Time Kinematic (RTK) rover (±1 cm horizontal, ±2 cm vertical accuracy; Leica Geosystems Inc., Norcross, GA; Figure 4). At sites with RTK GPS network coverage (Padilla, Port Susan, Nisqually, Siletz, Bull Island, and Bandon), rover positions were received in real time from the Leica Smartnet system via a CDMA modem (www.lecia-geosystems.com). At sites without network coverage (Skokomish, Grays Harbor, and Willapa), rover positions were received in real time from a Leica GS10 antenna base station via radio link. At sites where we used the...

In 2021, the USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) funded the collection of topo-bathymetric lidar (sometimes referred to as "green lidar") on the McKenzie River, Oregon. As part of this acquisition, lidar data were collected starting on the McKenzie River below Trail Bridge Reservoir and extending downstream roughly 125 km to its confluence with the Willamette River. Bathymetric lidar produced measurements of river bathymetry in areas of the McKenzie River channel that were generally less than 3 m in depth but did not produce measurements in deeper areas of the river. To fill the gaps in the topo-bathymetric lidar dataset (commonly referred to as "voids"), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers funded USGS to collect boat-based...

On October 13, 2020 a survey of Upper Letts Lake was conducted where both bathymetric and terrestrial lidar data were collected. Additionally, six bed material samples and three core samples were collected to understand the characterization of the grain-size of the lake bed. Survey data were merged with an additional lidar dataset from the USGS 3DEP program to create digital elevation model (DEM). The DEM was used to update the stage-storage and stage-surface area tables for the reservoir. This data release provides the following data sets; 1) bathymetric and terrestrial elevation data, 2) Combined bathymetric and 3DEP DEM, 3) stage-storage and stage-surface area tables from DEM, and 4) bed material grain-size and...

The 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano on the Island of Hawaiʻi saw the collapse of a new, nested caldera at the volcano’s summit, and the inundation of 35.5 square kilometers (13.7 square miles) of the lower Puna District with lava. Between May and August, while the summit caldera collapsed, a lava channel extended 11 kilometers (7 miles) from fissure 8 in Leilani Estates to Kapoho Bay, where it formed an approximately 3.5-square-kilometer (1.4-square-mile) lava delta along the coastline. Rapidly-deployed remote sensing techniques were vital in monitoring these events. Following the eruption, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) contracted the acquisition of rigorous airborne lidar surveys of Kīlauea Volcano's summit,...

The National Elevation Dataset (NED) is the primary elevation data product of the USGS. The NED is a seamless dataset with the best available raster elevation data of the conterminous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and territorial islands. The NED is updated on a nominal two month cycle to integrate newly available, improved elevation source data. All NED data are public domain. The NED is derived from diverse source data that are processed to a common coordinate system and unit of vertical measure. NED data are distributed in geographic coordinates in units of decimal degrees, and in conformance with the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83). All elevation values are in meters and, over the conterminous United...

This file contains one of many raster grids of the Elevation Derivatives for National Applications (EDNA), a multi-layered database that provides systematic and consistent topographically-derived hydrologic derivatives. The filled Digital Elevation Model (DEM) grid was created from the original elevation data by filling all of the depressions, or sinks, in the original DEM. To create this grid, an algorithm was used to locate and fill all depressions or sinks where there was no flow from pixel to pixel. During this process, efforts were made to maintain natural sink features.
