In late September 2017, intense precipitation associated with Hurricane Maria caused extensive landsliding across Puerto Rico. Much of the Utuado municipality in central Puerto Rico was severely impacted by landslides. Landslide density in this region was mapped as greater than 25 landslides/km2 (Bessette-Kirton et al., 2019). In order to better understand the controlling variables of landslide occurrence and runout in this region, four 2.5-km2 study areas were selected and all landslides within were mapped in detail using remote-sensing data. Included in the data release are five separate shapefiles: geographic areas representing the mapping extent of the four distinct areas (map areas, filename: map_areas), initiation...

This data release contains phytoplankton data and vertical profile measurements of water quality and light in oligotrophic (low nutrient) lakes within the Adirondack Park, New York State. Data were collected between June and October 2021 at five lakes. Four lake locations (Nearshore, Open Water, Layer, Bloom) were sampled representing one of four sample types (Bottom Sediment, Surface Water, Bloom Material, Layer). Water-quality field parameters (water temperature, dissolved-oxygen concentration and percent saturation, pH, specific conductance, turbidity, chlorophyll fluorescence, phycocyanin fluorescence, and fluorescent dissolved organic material) were measured at each sampling location from the surface to the...

The Massachusetts Drought Management Plan (DMP, 2023) uses data from select lake and impoundment systems as an index for drought in six of seven regions in the state. The contents of these lakes and impoundments are reported to Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and classified as one of five levels for drought severity ranging from level 0 (Normal; percentile greater than 30) to level 4 (Emergency; percentile less than 2). Lake and impoundment system data are provided at the end of each month to DCR through multiple agencies as lake levels, volumes, or percent-full (reservoir capacity). USGS reviewed data from 14 of the lake or impoundment systems including 28 waterbodies. Diagrams for...

In late September 2017, intense precipitation associated with Hurricane Maria caused extensive landsliding across Puerto Rico. Much of the Lares municipality in central-western Puerto Rico was severely impacted by landslides. Landslide density in this region was mapped as greater than 25 landslides/km2 (Bessette-Kirton et al., 2019). In order to better understand the controlling variables of landslide occurrence and runout in this region, three 2.5-km2 study areas were selected and all landslides within were mapped in detail using remote-sensing data. The Department of the Interior (DOI) Office of Wildland Fire and USGS created the The Wildfire Hazard and Risk Assessment Inventory to meet the Monitoring, Maintenance, and Treatment Plan requirements under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). It provides an inventory of key national, regional, and state wildfire risk and fire hazard assessments useful for understanding different characterizations of fire risk. Some of the assessments may be useful for communicating contributions toward risk reduction of treatments funded by DOI, including investments under BIL. For each assessment, the inventory provides a description and information about the spatial extent, resolution, fire modeling approach, values considered...

Information on radon occurrence in groundwater systems is important to assess risks from radon exposure. For this study we developed a novel passive method to measure for dissolved radon in groundwater using a coupled diffusive membrane encasing an alpha track (AT) detector. The membrane is gas permeable but water impermeable, which allows for the deployment of AT detectors in aqueous environments. The alpha track (AT) detectors measure the alpha decay of radon as it etches a film seated in the AT. Empirical relations have been developed to convert the etches or tracks from the film of the detectors to a radon concentration. Encasing the AT detectors in a membrane (called MAT detectors) prevents water from deteriorating...
