This collection (known internally at Maryland Geological Survey as Component 9) consists of 1,474 black-and-white aerial photographs (1,472 unique frames plus 2 duplicates) plus 2 index maps which serve as a finding aid for the photographs in the two sub-components of this collection -- DC Collection 1 and DC Collection 2. The photographs are 9 in. by 9 in. in size and cover Washington, DC and vicinity (including portions of Maryland and Virginia). The counties in Maryland covered by these aerial photographs are Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George's Counties. No date is printed on these photographs; however, based on features shown in the photographs, Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) estimates...

This collection (known internally at Maryland Geological Survey as Component 7) consists of 48 high-altitude, 9 in. by 9 in. infrared aerial photographs (48 unique frames). The photographs date from 1970-1974 and were flown over ten counties in Maryland and some small portions of Virginia along the Maryland border. The counties in Maryland covered by these photographs include Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George?s Counties. The scale of these photographs is not printed on the photographs; however, Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) calculates the scale to be approximately 1:120,000 for the Series 74-039 photographs; approximately 1:140,000...

This collection (known internally to Maryland Geological Survey as Component 5A) consists of 103 photo-mosaic index maps (89 unique maps plus duplicates) dating from 1955-1981. The date printed on the index map (and listed in the metadata) is the date that flying (photography) was completed for each index map. Each photo-mosaic index map shows individual aerial photographs (with Flight Lines and Frame numbers) in a particular U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7.5-minute or 15-minute quadrangle in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia, or West Virginia. These index maps are black-and-white and approximately 10 in. by 12 in. in size. This collection serves as a finding aid for a portion of the Quad-Based Aerial...

The U.S. Geological Survey's Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) collects aerial photography of the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) floodplain on a regular basis. These data are used to support the Center's long-term goals of understanding the UMRS and developing useful products for the Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRMP). In 2000, 1:16,000-scale true color aerial photos were collected on the Mississippi River from Cairo, IL to Minneapolis, MN and the on Illinois River from its confluence with the Mississippi near Grafton, IL to Lake Michigan/Chicago, IL. The photos were collected using a 60% stereo overlap between photos in the same flight line and a 30% overlap between flight lines....

The 25-mile stretch of the Yellow River adjacent to the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Central Wisconsin provides valuable habitat to numerous species of concern including the Red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus), the Cerulean warbler (Dendroica cerulea), the Eastern massasaugua rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus), and the Karner blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis). Since very little data exist regarding the location and composition of these habitats, a detailed land cover/land use (LCU) map is needed to better define and more effectively manage these areas of concern.

A high spatial resolution storm surge model was developed for the YK Delta area to assess biological impacts of storm surges under current and future climates. Storm surges are expected to be more frequent and more severe in the YK Delta area due to climate change and sea level rise. The biological impacts in the YK Delta due to the changed storm surges could be extreme. The model was assessed with respect to measured water level data at the coast and, where available, spatial extent of inundation, for 6 storms from the period 1992 to 2011. In total, inundation projections from 9 historical storms (5 from the assessment + 4 others) were developed. For each storm, an spatial inundation index (time-integral of water...

This collection (known internally at Maryland Geological Survey as Component 5) consists of 4,720 items – 4,715 black-and-white aerial photographs (4,688 unique frames plus 27 duplicates) and 5 associated index maps. The aerial photographs were flown or acquired by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and organized on a 7.5-minute quadrangle basis. The photographs are black-and-white and approximately 9 in. x 9 in. in size. The scale of the aerial photography varies but ranges from approximately 1:12,000 to 1:35,400. These photographs date from 1936-1991 and were donated to the Maryland Geological Survey (MGS). The index maps serve as a finding aid for several of the flight series flown over five quadrangles...

In 1994, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS)collected 1:15,000-scale true color aerialphotographs in Mississippi River Navigation Pools7 and 8. The FWS contracted the Upper MidwestEnvironmental Sciences Center (UMESC) to scan andgeoreference these images, to create referenceimages for use in geographic information system(GIS) software programs. These data are alsodistributed through the UMESC Web site so otherscan have access to the data as well.

The U.S. Geological Survey's Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) has obtained historical photography of the Upper Mississippi River, collected by the Corps of Engineers in the 1930s. The Center uses these photos in their training program for GIS interns, to provide them with experience in georeferencing photos. Whenever enough photos are georeferenced that a mosaic can be created, the data are made available through the center's Internet site. The 1937 photo mosaic for Mississippi River Navigation Pool 15 was created using 1:20,000-scale black-and-white photos collected during September 1937.

The "Historical Aerial Photographs of Maryland, 1937-1990, County Collection" consists of black and white aerial photos (9"x9", 1:20,000-scale) from several time periods: 1937-1938, 1949, 1951-1953, 1957, 1961-1964, 1968, 1970-1972, 1979-1981, and 1983-1990. These photographs were usually flown or otherwise acquired by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), or the private firm Air Photographics, Inc. (API). USDA and USGS photographs were donated to the Maryland Geological Survey (MGS), mainly by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA). MGS purchased the copyrighted API photographs. Due to copyright limitations, the public may view the paper API photographs but...

This collection (known internally at Maryland Geological Survey as Component 2) consists of 505 enlargements of unrectified, black-and-white aerial photographs flown along Maryland's barrier islands during 13 different time periods (or "sets") between October 1952 and July 1964. Each of the photographs in the collection is about 2 feet x 2 feet in size. Some of the photographs have a scale of 1:14,400 or 1:6,000 stamped on the front. On the backs of many of the photographs is another stamp of "1" = 200 ft". The photographs cover the Maryland section of two narrow barrier islands that lie along Maryland's Atlantic coast, separated by the Ocean City Inlet: Fenwick Island to the north and Assateague Island to the...
