The Desert Peak 7-1/2' Quadrangle is located in southeastern Pinal County, and extreme northern Pima County, about 40 km northwest of Tucson, Arizona. It includes the extreme western edge of the Tortolita Mountains, Owl Head Buttes, and the piedmont areas extending west to, and including, Desert Peak. Elevations in the study range from approximately 3100 feet in the Tortolita Mountains to 2000 feet on the western piedmonts. Bedrock and surficial geology in the study area were mapped between October 2001 to June 2002 as part of a multi-year mapping program directed at producing complete geologic map coverage for the Phoenix-Tucson metropolitan corridor. The study area is located ~40 km southeast of downtown Tucson, and is bounded by the Rincon Mountains on the north, the Empire Mountains on the southeast, and the northernmost Santa Rita Mountains on the southeast. The map area covers the southern part of the Vail 7 ½' Quadrangle, including all the Paleozoic rocks in the Colossal Cave area. Field mapping was completed during October 2000 through April 2001 as part of a multiyear mapping program directed at producing complete geologic map coverage for the Phoenix-Tucson metropolitan corridor. This map depicts the geology of the Huachuca City 7.5' quadrangle in Cochise County, southeastern Arizona, which consists almost entirely of upper Cenozoic surficial deposits. The map area is located between Benson and Sierra Vista along the western side of the upper San Pedro River Valley. The map area covers much of the southeastern piedmont of the Mustang and Whetstone mountains, part of the valley of the Babocomari River, and part of the northern piedmont of the Huachuca Mountains. It includes the small communities of Huachuca City and Whetstone, and the northern fringe of Fort Huachuca, a U.S. Army base. The rocks exposed in this study area represent the eastern-most exposures of the Roskruge Mountains, themselves part of a long chain of low ridges and hills extending as far north as the Silverbell Mountains, and as far south as the Coyote Mountains. This part of the Roskruge Mountains contains rocks that can be grouped into three major subdivisions as follows: (1) a sequence of steeply tilted and folded sedimentary and volcanic rocks containing andesite, rhyolite, and both fluvial and eolian sandstones, (2) a thick pile of Cretaceous rhyodacitic welded ash-flow tuff—here containing only the Tuff of Sharp Peak, and (3) much younger middle Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary rocks.
