Plate Caption: Bed and veinlets of gypsum in lower part of Embar formation near south end of Sheep Mountain anticline. About 17 feet above the 4 foot layer of gypsum is limestone filled with marine fossils. The veinlets of gypsum are in structure less red shale.
Colorado National Monument, Colorado. Fruita Canyon, looking northeast from a point on Rim Rock Drive above the head of the canyon. Dark Proterozoic rocks floor the canyon, above which are the slopes of the red Chinle Formation and the cliffs of Wingate Sandstone capped by the lower resistant beds of the Kayenta Formation.
