High-resolution single-channel Chirp and minisparker seismic-reflection data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in September and October 2006, offshore Bolinas to San Francisco, California. Data were collected aboard the R/V Lakota, during field activity L-1-06-SF. Chirp data were collected using an EdgeTech 512 chirp subbottom system and were recorded with a Triton SB-Logger. Minisparker data were collected using a SIG 2-mille minisparker sound source combined with a single-channel streamer, and both were recorded with a Triton SB-Logger.

The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Grand River Dam Authority completed a high-resolution multibeam bathymetric survey to compute a new capacity and surface-area table. The capacity and surface-area tables describe the relation between the elevation of the water surface and the volume of water that can be impounded at each given water-surface elevation. The capacity and surface area of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees were computed from a Triangular Irregular Network (TIN) surface created in Global Mapper Version 21.0.1. The TIN surface was created from three datasets: (1) a multibeam bathymetric survey of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees in 2019 (Hunter and others 2020), (2) a 2017 USGS bathymetric survey...

This dataset is a LAS (industry-standard binary format for storing lidar point clouds) dataset containing light detection and ranging (lidar) data and sonar data representing the beach and near-shore topography of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, near the Duluth entry, Duluth, Minnesota. Average point spacing of the LAS files in the dataset are as follows: lidar, 0.094 meters (m); multibeam sonar, 0.501 m; single-beam sonar, 1.876 m. The LAS dataset was used to create digital elevation models (DEMs) of 10 m (32.8084 feet) and 1 m (3.28084 feet) resolution, of the approximate 1.75 square kilometer surveyed area. Lidar data were collected August 22, 2022 using a boat mounted Velodyne VLP-16 unit and methodology similar...

High-resolution single-channel Chirp and minisparker seismic-reflection data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in March and April 2007, offshore San Mateo County, California. Data were collected aboard the R/V Fulmar during field activity F-02-07-NC.

The elevation contours in this dataset have a 2-foot (ft) interval and were derived from a digital elevation model (DEM) of beach topography and nearshore bathymetry of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, Duluth, Minnesota. The DEM has a 1 meter (m; 3.28084 ft) cell size and was created from Lidar data representing beach topography and sonar data representing bathymetry extending approximately 700-800 m offshore. The data cover an approximately 1.75 square kilometer survey area. Lidar data were collected November 01, 2022 using a boat mounted Velodyne VLP-16 unit and methodology similar to that described by Huizinga and Wagner (2019). Multibeam sonar data were collected October 31-November 01, 2022 using a Norbit...

A comprehensive map of Quaternary faults has been generated for offshore of California. The Quaternary fault map includes mapped geometries and attribute information for offshore fault systems located in California State and Federal waters. The polyline shapefile and matching KML file have been compiled from previously published mapping where relatively dense, high-resolution marine geophysical data exist. The data are accompanied by a PDF containing citations for the compiled source data. Most of the marine geophysical data used for mapping have been processed, merged, and released by the USGS in maps, data releases, and journal publications in support of the California Seafloor Mapping Program and the U.S. West...

This data release contains information on computed tomography (CT) images of a vibracore that was collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in 2019. A site next to the San Lorenzo River in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, California, was cored to understand the history of recent vertical incision and floodplain abandonment. The core was split into 3 segments after collection. Each segment was scanned using a Geotek Rotating X-ray CT (RXCT) System and CT reconstruction was performed using Geotek reconstruction software. Geotek CT_Quickview software was used to select a representative down-core orthogonal slice from each core segment and the Geotek AddRuler software was used to display core-lengths in each image. The...

Three semi-automated detection approaches using Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) have been performed to identify artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) riverine dredges on the Madeira River in Brazil. The methods are: i) Search for Unidentified Maritime Objects (SUMO), an established method for large ocean ship detection; and two techniques specifically developed for riverine environments: ii) a local detection method; and iii) a global threshold method. The results from each method are contained on this landing page along with the visual interpretation dataset of SAR data used as the validation dataset. The pre-processed SAR data used to produce these results are found also found on this page.
