Abstract The isotopic composition of Pb in fugitive dust suspended by a vehicle from 13 unsurfaced roads in Missouri was measured to identify the source of Pb within an established long-term mining area. A three end member model using 207Pb/206Pb and concentration as tracers resulted in fugitive dust samples plotting in the mixing field of well characterized heterogeneous end members. End members selected for this investigation include the 207Pb/206Pb for 1) a Pb-mixture representing mine tailings, 2) aerosol Pb impacted soils within close proximity to the Buick secondary recycling smelter, and 3) an average of soils, rock cores and drill cuttings representing the background characteristics. Aqua regia total concentrations...

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended-sediment loads, and changes in loads, in rivers across the Chesapeake Bay watershed have been calculated using monitoring data from the Chesapeake Bay Nontidal Network (NTN) stations for the period 1985 through 2018 Nutrient and suspended-sediment loads and changes in loads were determined by applying a weighted regression approach called WRTDS (Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season). A recently published extension of WRTDS allows users to separate these estimates into high- and low-flow conditions. This data release contains (1) a table of daily high- and low-flow concentration and load estimates for NTN stations between 1985 - 2018 and (2) an R file that contains...

The Rio Grande Transboundary Integrated Hydrologic Model (RGTIHM), which was originally developed by Hanson and others (2020) (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20195120), was updated and recalibrated to minimize the biases in RGTIHM’s simulation of streamflow and to incorporate new estimates of historical agricultural consumptive use in the study area. The RGTIHM was developed through an interagency effort between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) to provide a tool for analyzing the hydrologic system response to the historical (March 1940 through 2014) evolution of water use and potential changes in water supplies and demands in the Hatch Valley (also known as Rincon Valley...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District and Fort Bend Subsidence District, constructed a finite-difference numerical groundwater-flow model of the northern Gulf Coast aquifer region for 1897 through 2018 using MODFLOW 6 with the Newton formulation solver to simulate groundwater flow and land-surface subsidence. Model parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis were conducted with PEST++ Iterative Ensemble Smoother software. The simulated results are described in the associated U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1877. The model archive includes all the necessary files to run the MODFLOW 6 model and process the results for the posterior base realization...

This data release is part of a 2016-2019 study on the geology, geochemistry and geochronology of ore systems in the eastern Yukon-Tanana Upland region, Alaska. Whole rock chemistry was conducted on 185 samples, mostly from Au prospects, with lesser samples from porphyry Cu prospects. Geographically, most samples are from gold prospects near the Pogo Au mine and east to Black Mountain in the Big Delta quadrangle. Fewer samples are from prospects in the Eagle and Tanacross Quadrangles. Samples were submitted to the USGS contract laboratory and analyzed for select trace elements and gold. Sixty elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy-mass spectroscopy (ICP-OES-MS), sodium...

A new regional dataset was produced using decision tree classifier and other techniques to model landcover. Multi-season satellite imagery (Landsat ETM+, 1999-2003) and digital elevation model (DEM) derived datasets (e.g. elevation, landform, aspect, etc.) were utilized to derive rule sets for the various landcover classes. Eleven mapping areas, each characterized by similar ecological and spectral characteristics, were modeled independently of one another. An internal validation for modeled classes was performed on a withheld 20% of the sample data to assess model performance. Results of the validation will be presented in the final report and are not available at this time. Mapping area models were mosaicked to...

Daily lake surface temperatures estimates for 185,549 lakes across the contiguous United States from 1980 to 2020 generated using an entity-aware long short-term memory deep learning model. In-situ measurements used for model training and evaluation are from 12,227 lakes and are included as well as daily meteorological conditions and lake properties. Median per-lake estimated error found through cross validation on lakes with in-situ surface temperature observations was 1.24 °C. The generated dataset will be beneficial for a wide range of applications including estimations of thermal habitats and the impacts of climate change on inland lakes.

We attempted to discern the contributions of physical habitat, water chemistry, nutrients, and contaminants from historic lead-zinc miningactivities on the riffle-dwelling benthic fish community of the SpringRiver, a midwestern warmwater stream that originates in Missouri and flowsinto Kansas and Oklahoma. The Spring River has a fish community thatincludes the Neosho madtom, Noturus placidus, a species Federally listed asthreatened. Although anthropogenic factors, such as contaminants, limitedpopulations and densities of fishes, an integrated approach that assessednatural and anthropogenic factors was necessary to effectively estimate theinfluence of the latter. Fish populations in the Spring River, especiallyNeosho...
