The current database consists of location 9,032 entries. The surface-based, point data include 5,272, 6,939, and 903 density, magnetic susceptibility, and NRM measurements, respectively. Downhole data from 146 drillcore have also been incorporated, yielding an additional 1,145 and 9,622 measurements of density and magnetic susceptibility, respectively. Geologic interpretation of gravity and magnetic anomaly data in a given area is greatly enhanced if density, magnetic susceptibility (MS) and natural remanent magnetization (NRM) data are available for representative rock-types (Chandler and others, 2008). Along with geologic information from outcrop and drill-holes, rock property data help relate geophysical anomaly...

Records in this collection are classified into one of four categories that best characterizes the data contained within the borehole record. The classifications are: Geotechnical: Boreholes and pits created with the intent to gain a detailed understanding of the subsurface lithology and soil or rock properties therein. These records have additional data beyond lithologic descriptions including penetrometer resistance, shear and strength tests, density measurements, etc. Lithologic borings: Boreholes are drill solely for the purpose of identifying subsurface lithology. Material testing techniques were not used (or the results are not provided) to allow for a more detailed understanding of subsurface material properties....

Compilation of rotary sonic drill cores with magnetic susceptibility measurements collected by Minnesota Geological Survey Quaternary geologists. The full dataset is available upon request and includes 1) magnetic susceptibility profiles for each rotary sonic core, 2) named unit averages and standard deviations for each county, and 3) named unit averages and standard deviations for all data.

Minnesota Geological Survey, in cooperation with industry, sampled the State of Minnesota and adjacent regions for till geochemistry and indicator minerals at a 30-km spacing during summer 2004. Within target cells, each a quarter-degree latitude by a half-degree longitude, till from between about 1 and 2 m depth was sampled by filling a 15 liter plastic pail. At a few sites, vertical profiles were collected. In addition, three transects to the north were sampled, to help identify sediments derived by long-distance glacial transport, to obtain reference samples from the Thompson nickel belt, and also to extend sampling to the limit of Hudson Bay-derived carbonate-bearing sediments, to permit comparison to Minnesota...

All sediment samples from auger holes, outcrops, and cores are processed to determine texture. The 1-2 mm coarse sand fraction is packaged separately, and about half of these fractions are categorized lithologically by a glacial geologist. The data are recorded on paper data sheets and in a database.

Hand specimens of rocks collected as a part of field work conducted primarily by present and former WGNHS staff members. Samples date from the early 20th century to the 1990s and were collected throughout the state. Many of the samples are described in the historical field notebook collection, and relationships between the samples and the field notebooks have been established and captured in identifiers. Locations for samples were taken from field notes, maps, and accession lists. There are approximately 5,700 hand samples in this collection.
An FY17 NGGDPP grant funded a demolition project to rescue of 1952+ core boxes from a collapsed building, the Cary Annex. The OTHER Undocumented Core Collections (OUCC) defined herein helps compile the interim results of an inventory of 781 of the 1952+ rescued boxes, funded by an FY21 NGGDPP grant. As a result of the inventory, 277 core boxes were identified that are associated with 63 new, previously undocumented boreholes. All of the boxes were damaged and likely need reboxing; 85 were reboxed by NCGS staff. Some of the core boxes have partial losses of core lengths; some material is weathered in situ (in the box). These collections include HARD ROCK and TRIASSIC geologic core samples. Coordinate data is not...

This collection consists of parts of two cores, USGS 6 and USGS 7. The cores are 3 inches in diameter, with three feet of core per box. USGS 6 has 19 boxes of a non-continuous interval, 57 feet total. USGS 7 has 1 box. The cores are halite of the Salado Formation ranging in color from clear through pink to reddish orange (Roach 1966) and are Permian in age. Depths range from 1143 ft to 1437 ft. The cores were drilled following the nuclear detonation of Project Gnome in 1961. Roach (1966; USGS Branch of Astrogeology) took slices from the cores to analyze the thermoluminescence properties of the halite and how they were affected by the nucelar blast.

Raster grids depicting the current knowledge for elevation for the bedrock surface, pre-Mesozoic surface, the Precambrian surface and the basement surface based on the addition of new data from completed mapping. Basement is the top of structurally complex Precambrian rocks where the Phanerozoic and Proterozoic basins are removed based on geophysical modeling and drill hole interpretation. Statewide elevation datasets are stored as contoured line files and attributed with publication source, contour elevation and date and time of last edit. New raster grids are generated with the 'Topo to Raster' tool in ESRI ArcMap 10.7. 6/2023 Update: The 2023 version of rasters are currently not available online to download but...

This collection consists of field notebooks created by the personnel of the Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS) and its predecessor, the Minnesota Geological and Natural History Survey (MGNHS). The notes include basic data used to compile annual reports and bulletins on geological matters. For a description of the extent of geological work performed during the eras of the MGNHS and MGS, consult George M. Schwartz, “History of the Minnesota Geological Survey,” which identifies the individual studies made by officers of the survey between 1872 and 1963. The MGS was a major source of funding for faculty research, which focused on field petrology, mineralogy and economic geology and aligned to the individual professional...
An FY17 NGGDPP grant funded a demolition project to rescue of 1952+ core boxes from a collapsed building, the Cary Annex. This update on the status of the Legacy Core and Cuttings Collection (LCCC) helps compile the interim results of an inventory of 781 of the 1952+ rescued boxes, partly funded by an FY21 NGGDPP grant. As a result of the inventory, 504 core boxes were identified that are associated with 42 original borehole records in the LCCC. For the same borehole records, 367 core boxes remain palletized in conexes, or were damaged or lost. All of the core boxes were damaged and likely need reboxing; 120 were reboxed by NCGS staff. Some of the core boxes have partial losses of core lengths; some material is...

This collection consists of legacy geological maps created and collected by Warren Hobbs during his tungsten assessments during his career with the USGS. These maps are from locations across the western United States. These maps were gathered for the purpose of conducting a national tungsten assessment.

A compilation of drill core logs and thin section notes, including well abandonment reports, drill hole location maps, and associated notes, from Minnesota Geological Survey Precambrian geologists. These logs and notes were scanned using NGGDPP FY22 support and will support future investigations of Precambrian geology by MGS Precambrian geologists, other statewide stakeholders, industry, and universities.
Hand specimens of rocks collected in and around Marathon County as part of a bedrock mapping project in the 1970s and 1980s. Specimens were collected by P.E. Myers and UW-Oshkosh geologist Gene LaBerge as part of the field work supporting WGNHS publication Information Circular 45: Precambrian Geology of Marathon County, 1983. The collection consists of about 1500 specimens taken from approximately 580 outcrop locations.
