Scene in Monument Park, along Monument Creek, and the small tributaries that flow into it from the west, some of the most singular and unique monument formations to be met with in the whole country, and the view we have noted gives but a faint conception of their beauty. View is upon a small tributary of Monument Creek, about 9 miles above Colorado City. The stream has cut a little valley through a coarse material with layers of irregular deposition, hardened into a compact sandstone. Then comes a thin layer of ironstone, or impure limonite, with now and then this seams of marl or clay, but the whole is a quartzite material, and rather coarse. Picturesque views of Rocky Mountain scenery. A natural cave near Green River, in an upheaved ridge of limestone. It is full of holes and crevices, that give shelter to multitudes of bats and animals. This cave has also been a favorite resort for Indians, as is shown by traces of fires, the walls of stone laid up for defense, and the chipped flint and arrowheads scattered about. Daggett County, Utah. 1870. (Stereoscopic view similar to Jackson, W. H. 330)

Album Caption: Darien Expedition. Pinogana, Tuyra River. 1871. NARA # 77-H-8913S-25. During 1870-1875, Navy Commander Thomas O. Selfridge led several exploring and surveying expeditions to the Isthmus of Darien (now known as Panama) to ascertain the practicability of a ship canal between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Photographer Timothy O'Sullivan accompanied the first Darien Expedition in 1870, and photographer John Moran (older brother of Painter Thomas Moran) traveled wit the second Darien Expedition in 1871. Reports from later expeditions did not mention whether a photographer accompanied the surveyors. Apparently O'Sullivan traveled only to the eastern-most area on the Atlantic side of the Isthmus, and...
