Sediment samples were collected from Los Padres reservoir in the Carmel River watershed, central California coast, between July 11 and 17, 2017, using a CME-45 barge-mounted drill rig, to characterize sedimentary properties in the reservoir deposits following the Soberanes Fire of 2016 and high river flows in winter 2017. Borehole samples were recovered using direct push coring with an Osterberg piston sampler operated by Taber Drilling Company of Sacramento, California, and overseen by AECOM, Inc. Sediment was recovered using a split-barrel sampler and a rotary drill bit was added to the sampler where needed to penetrate coarse sediment. Samples from three boreholes are described in this data release: two sampled...

Sediment traps were deployed in thirty-three ephemeral and perennial tributaries to the San Juan River during 2021 and 2022. This dataset includes the chemical concentrations of the sediment samples collected in sediment traps during storm events. These traps collected sediment during storm events that typically occur as monsoonal convective storms from June to September. Because of the rural nature of the watershed, sediment traps were collected every 3 weeks so the sediment collected is a composite of that time period. The date listed is the date the trap was collected. Major ions are reported in weight percentage, while all other elements are reported in parts per million. Each sample was split and analyzed following...

Ecological models facilitate evaluation of alternative approaches to restore the Greater Everglades ecosystem. However, the provision of useful and accessible models is a challenge because there is often a disconnect between model output and its use by decision makers. Joint Ecosystem Modeling (JEM) meets this challenge by providing ecological model output tailored to management decisions; ecological models were developed by JEM to evaluate potential effects of restoration projects on natural resources in the impacted areas. The Biscayne Bay and Southeastern Everglades Ecosystem Restoration (BBSEER) Project is part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). A goal of BBSEER is to identify potential...

An extreme flood in 2016 caused widespread culvert blockages and road failures across northern Wisconsin, including extensive damage along steep tributaries and ravines in the Marengo River watershed. Along with the flooding, there were fluvial erosion hazards (FEH) associated with a large amount of erosion in headwater areas. Of special concern were FEHs associated with gullying, loss of wetland storage, and valley-side mass wasting. In 2020, a pilot study was begun to map and classify ephemeral and perennial streams and wetlands in terms of their susceptibility to fluvial erosion hazards. This study combines rapid geomorphic field assessments of river corridor erosion and coupled sediment and debris delivery with...

These data provide beryllium-7 (7Be) and excess lead-210 (210Pbxs) activity for fine-grained, mobile, streambed sediment in the Black Creek, Indiana (IN) stream-channel network. This basin is monitored in cooperation with the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). During the period July 22-25, 2019 (summer low flow), the thickness and spatial extent of soft, mobile, fine-grained (mainly silt and clay) streambed sediment was inventoried and sampled along 150-meter (m) transects. A combination of stream corridor land-use distribution, valley type, channel slope, stream order (Strahler, 1957), and ecoregion (Omernik and Griffith, 2014) was used to select 30 rapid geomorphic assessment reaches using methods of Fitzpatrick...

In January 2020, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) began work on the Interstate 26 (I 26) highway widening project that involves a bridge crossing over the French Broad River (FBR) near Asheville, North Carolina. The U.S Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the NCDOT conducted a pre-construction bathymetric survey of the streambed in June 2019 (Whaling and Wagner, 2021) within a one-kilometer reach of the FBR at the bridge construction site. A canoe-based repeat bathymetric survey was collected with a single-beam echosounder approximately 23 months after construction began, with the purpose to monitor geomorphological changes to the streambed and inform the NCDOT of potential impacts...

This is the data archive for the publication Ungulate Migrations of the Western United States, Volume 4 and includes the collection of GIS map files that are mapped and described in the report. These map files are meant to provide a common spatial representation of the mapped migrations and seasonal ranges. This data release provides the means for ungulate migrations to be mapped and planned for across a wide variety of landscapes where they occur. Due to data sharing constraints of participating agencies, not all the files that underlie the mapped migrations included in the report have been released. Data in this archive can be downloaded two ways. To download by individual herd/range, clicking on child item pages...

Post-fire shifts in vegetation composition will have broad ecological impacts. However, information characterizing post-fire recovery patterns and their drivers are lacking over large spatial extents. In this analysis we used Landsat imagery collected when snow cover (SCS) was present, in combination with growing season (GS) imagery, to distinguish evergreen vegetation from deciduous vegetation. We sought to (1) characterize patterns in the rate of post-fire, dual season Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) across the region, (2) relate remotely sensed patterns to field-measured patterns of re-vegetation, and (3) identify seasonally-specific drivers of post-fire rates of NDVI recovery. Rates of post-fire...

As part of the periodic update of the geothermal energy assessments for the USA (e.g., last update by Williams and others, 2008), a new three-dimensional temperature map has been constructed for the Great Basin, USA. Williams and DeAngelo (2011) identified uncertainty in estimates of conductive heat flow near land surface as the largest contributor to uncertainty in previously published temperature maps. The new temperature maps incorporate new conductive heat flow estimates developed by DeAngelo and others (2023). Predicted temperatures at depth are compared with representative measurements (for conductively dominated conditions), showing good agreement under relatively simple uniform conditions. Inputs included...

Bayluscide, the 2-aminoethanol salt of niclosamide (2′, 5-dichloro-4′-nitrosalicylanilide), is a pesticide that is used in conjunction with TFM (4-Nitro-3-(trifluoromethyl)phenol) to treat streams tributary to the Great Lakes that are infested with invasive parasitic sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus). The application TFM with 0.5 to 2.0 percent (%) Bayluscide can significantly reduce the amount of TFM required to achieve effective control. The current formulation of Bayluscide used in combination TFM during stream treatments conducted the Great Lakes Fishery Commission binational Sea Lamprey Control Program is an emulsifiable concentrate (EC). The Bayluscide EC formulation is highly effective; however, it degrades...
