Invertebrate, fish, and habitat data were collected as part of a cooperative project that began in 2002 between the U.S. Geological Survey, Colorado Springs Utilities, and Colorado Springs Engineering. Other entities have contributed to the project over the years including Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Data were primarily collected from up to 35 sites – 33 sites within the Fountain Creek Basin but also from two sites on the Arkansas River. The number of sites sampled each year as well as the number of annual visits during which data were collected, and sampling methods used during each visit vary. Data were collected between 2002 and 2023 and is intended to be updated annually as new data are collected and available....

High-frequency observations of surface water at fine spatial scales are critical to effectively manage aquatic habitat, flood risk and water quality. We developed inundation algorithms for Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 across 12 sites within the conterminous United States (CONUS) covering >536,000 km2 and representing diverse hydrologic and vegetation landscapes. These algorithms were trained on data from 13,412 points spread throughout the 12 sites. Each scene in the 5-year (2017-2021) time series was classified into open water, vegetated water, and non-water at 20 m resolution using variables not only from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2, but also variables derived from topographic and weather datasets. The Sentinel-1 model...
The decline of the iconic monarch butterfly in North America has motivated research on the impacts of land use and land cover (LULC) change and climate variability on monarch habitat and population dynamics. We investigated spring and fall trends in LULC, milkweed and nectar resources over a 20-year period, and ~30 years of climate variables in Mexico and Texas, a key region supporting spring and fall migration during monarchs annual life cycle. We estimated a 2.9% decline in milkweed in Texas, but little to no change in Mexico. Fall and spring nectar resources declined <1% in both countries. Vegetation greenness increased in both the fall and spring in Mexico while the other climate variables, for both countries,...
These datasets provide lineament mapping, catchment-averaged metrics of hypsometry and channel steepness, field observations, and a structure from motion model and orthomosiac photograph of sites in the Eastern Tennessee seismic zone in eastern Tennessee, USA. The lineament mapping contains linework of possible neotectonic features mapped from 1-m lidar data. Catchment-averaged metric of hypsometry and channel steepness are for selected catchments along the Powell River in northern Tennessee. Field observations provides points and notes of reconnaissance fieldwork to describe and document select lineaments in the Powell River and Oak Ridge areas. The structure from motion model and orthomosiac photograph document...
Visible/near-infrared (VNIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectral library composed of twenty natural tephra samples from ten volcanic sources that span a range of compositions and components. The bulk, glass, and mineral phase compositions of each sample have been measured and VNIR and MIR spectra from four size fractions of each sample were collected. The VNIR spectral library has been expanded (ed. 2) to twenty-two samples.
This data release presents geologic map data for the surficial geology of the Aztec 1-degree by 2-degree quadrangle. The map area lies within two physiographic provinces of Fenneman (1928): the Southern Rocky Mountains province, and the Colorado Plateau province, Navajo section. Geologic mapping is mostly compiled from published geologic map data sources ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:250,000 scale, with limited new interpretive contributions. Gaps in map compilation are related to a lack of published geologic mapping at the time of compilation, and not necessarily a lack of surficial deposits. Much of the geology incorporated from published geologic maps is adjusted based on digital elevation model and natural-color...

These orthophotos and digital surface model (DSM) were derived from low-altitude (approximately 92-m above ground surface) images collected from Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) flights over edge-of-field sites that are part of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) monitoring. The objective of this UAS photogrammetry data collection was to provide information on the tile-drain network in individual fields with the goal of understanding already observed patterns in runoff amount and water quality from these sites. A 3DR Solo quadcopter served as the flight vehicle, flights were pre-planned using Mission Planner, and flights were flown using Tower. Geospatial data were originally in WGS84...

These data were compiled for Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge (CPNWR) in southern Arizona, to support managment efforts of water resources and wildlife conservation. Objective(s) of our study were to 1) measure water storage capacity at select stage heights in three tanks (also termed tinajas), 2) build a stage storage model to help CPNWR staff accurately estimate water volumes throughout the year, and 3) collect topographic data adjacent to the tanks as a means to help connect these survey data to past or future work. These data represent high-resolution (sub-meter) ground based lidar measurements used to meet these objectives and are provided as: processed lidar files (point clouds), rasters (digital elevation...

The Maumee River transports huge loads of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to Lake Erie. The increased concentrations of N and P are causing eutrophication of the lake, creating hypoxic zones, and contributing to phytoplankton blooms. It is hypothesized that the P loads are a major contributor to harmful algal blooms that occur in the western basin of Lake Erie, particularly in summer. The Maumee River has been identified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as a priority watershed where action needs to be taken to reduce nutrient loads. This study quantified rates of biogeochemical processes affecting downstream flux of N and P by 1) measuring indices of potential sediment P retention and 2) measuring...

A detailed description of the methodology employed to perform a geology-based assessment of in-place oil shale and nahcolite resources in the Piceance Basin of northwestern Colorado is presented here. Considerable advancements in computer and database technology since the previous oil shale assessment in 1989 provided the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessment team with new tools to convert legacy data, store and manipulate new data, perform calculations, and quantify, report, and display the assessment results. Relational database and geographic information systems (GIS) software were used seamlessly to streamline the storage and manipulation of the data. A deterministic spatial interpolation method, the Radial...

This model archive provides all data, code, and modeling results used in Barclay and others (2023) to assess the ability of process-guided deep learning stream temperature models to accurately incorporate groundwater-discharge processes. We assessed the performance of an existing process-guided deep learning stream temperature model of the Delaware River Basin (USA) and explored four approaches for improving groundwater process representation: 1) a custom loss function that leverages the unique patterns of air and water temperature coupling resulting from different temperature drivers, 2) inclusion of additional groundwater-relevant catchment attributes, 3) incorporation of additional process model outputs, and...
This data release contains three sets of estimated values at selected sites within the Colorado River Basin: 1) daily specific conductance at 143 sites in the Upper Basin and 3 sites in the Lower Basin (WY 1980-2022); 2) daily baseflow discharge at 100 sites in the Upper Basin and 3 sites in the Lower Basin (WY 1980-2022); and 3) seasonal baseflow discharge and baseflow dissolved solids load at 143 sites in the Upper Basin (WY 1986-2020). The estimates of daily baseflow discharge will be used as input to an application of the USGS GSFLOW model, which is a coupled groundwater and surface-water flow model based on the integration of the USGS Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS-V) and the USGS Modular Groundwater...
Bathymetric and topographic surveys were collected along an approximately 47-kilometer reach of the Colorado River beginning at the Pumphouse Recreation site and extending downstream to the USGS streamgage located near the Colorado River Road (Catamount) bridge. The surveys were collected using real-time kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers by USGS personnel during several time periods between May 13, 2021, through July 26, 2023, using a combination of sonar and wading techniques. The wading surveys include point data that are provided as comma-delimited text files of northing, easting, elevation, and point code. The sonar surveys include point data that are provided as comma-delimited text...

This data release includes data processing scripts, data products, and associated metadata for a study investigating trends in Mississippi River nitrogen and phosphorus loads to the Gulf of Mexico. This data release consists of three main components: 1) Nitrogen and phosphorus balances and accumulation, which account for major nutrient inputs (fertilizer, manure, waste water treatment facility effluent, atmospheric deposition, weathering and nitrogen fixation) and outputs (crop harvest and removal and gaseous emissions of nitrogen). Annual balances and total accumulation are estimated for the entire Mississippi River Basin, which covers 2,887,854 km2 for the time period from 1950 to 2017, 2) Weighted Regression...
