RSPARROW is an open-source system of R scripts and functions for executing and evaluating SPARROW models, with output generated in graphical, map, and tabular forms. Users operate the system in RStudio from a single R control script that manages access to the supporting input files and functions. The documentation describes the steps necessary to estimate the static version of the model. Static SPARROW models provide reach-level predictions (and uncertainties) of the long-term mean annual water-quality loads and flow-weighted concentrations. The predictions also include the shares of the load attributable to individual upstream sources and predictions of the mass quantities of the total load and individual sources...

Environmental DNA (eDNA) water samples were collected at 15 tree islands containing wading bird breeding colonies (order Pelecaniformes) and 15 empty control islands in the central Everglades of Florida in spring of 2017 (April through June) and analyzed for the presence of eDNA from invasive Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus). The Burmese python is now established as a breeding population throughout south Florida, USA. Pythons can consume large quantities of prey and may be a particular threat to wading bird breeding colonies in the Everglades. To quantify python occupancy rates at tree islands where wading birds breed, we utilized environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis—a genetic tool which detects shed DNA in water...

Due to their position at the land-sea interface, coastal wetlands are sensitive to sea-level rise and many other aspects of global change. Small changes in coastal wetland surface elevation can lead to comparatively large changes in coastal wetland ecosystem structure and function, and in some cases wetland loss. The surface elevation table (SET)-marker horizon (MH) approach (SET-MH, together) is a method for quantifying net wetland surface elevation change while accounting for the relative contributions of various biological, geological, and hydrological processes that can occur within different segments of the soil profile (e.g., deep, shallow subsurface, and surface soil depths). This data release includes long-term...

Dataset of segments (e.g. phrases, sentences, paragraphs) associated with ecological values, human community values, stressors, or restoration strategies found within Gulf Coast state management plans and restoration project descriptions, collected 2019-2020.
This dataset contains a series of maps of projected threats and current state of habitats for the threatened Gunnison sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus). The maps are 30-m spatially explicit projections of current habitats (2016) and future landscape change (by 2070) for the full range of the species’ seven extant populations, which cover diverse ecoregions of the imperiled sagebrush biome of the western United States. Risk maps assessed projected changes caused by climate change-driven shifts in sagebrush habitats, mesic habitats, pinyon-juniper encroachment, and invasive annual grasses, as well as potentially synergistic risk of development and wildfire. We used a scenario-based risk assessment framework based...
One-percent annual exceedance probability (AEP) flood-flow estimates were computed at flood insurance study (FIS) locations across Pennsylvania using methods identified in Scientific Investigation Report (SIR) 2019-5094. Following guidance outlined in SIR 2016-5149, valid statistical reaches (VSRs) were identified for streamgages, which were used to assist with the determination of the applicable method used to compute a USGS-derived 1-percent AEP flood-flow estimate at an FIS location. Methods included: weighting, weighting and transferring, and regression equations. The USGS-derived 1-percent AEP flood-flow estimates were then compared to 1-percent AEP flood-flow estimates published in FIS's and furnished by the...
A model application using the phase-averaged wave model SWAN (in Delft3D) was developed to simulate wind waves in South San Francisco Bay, California, between 30 May 2021 and 19 May 2022. This data release describes the development of the model application, provides input files, and includes output from the model simulations in netCDF format. Model Application The model application included two domains (Fig. 1) that were 1-way coupled. The coarse overall model domain (wsfb_g1.grd) included the coastal ocean across the entire San Francisco Sacramento/San Joaquin Bay-Delta region was forced along the oceanic boundaries with measured time-varying, spatially uniform wave parameters derived from the Coastal Data Information...

Global climate change is leading to large-scale shifts in species’ range limits. For example, rising winter temperatures are shifting the abundance and distributions of tropical, cold sensitive plant species towards higher latitudes. Coastal wetlands provide a prime example of such shifts, with tropical mangrove forests expanding into temperate salt marshes as winter warming alleviates past geographic limits set by cold intolerance. These rapid changes are dynamic and challenging to monitor, and uncertainty remains regarding the extent of mangrove expansion near poleward range limits. Here, we synthesized existing datasets and expert knowledge to assess the current (i.e., 2021) distribution of mangroves near dynamic...

In coastal wetlands, one of the most striking examples of climate change is the poleward range expansion of mangrove forests in response to warming winters. In North America, the Cedar Key region has often been considered the range limit for mangroves along the western coast of Florida (USA). However, within the past several decades, robust stands of Avicennia germinans and Rhizophora mangle have been observed in the Apalachicola Bay region, which is 200 km northwest of Cedar Key. This dataset characterizes the distribution and structure of the mangroves in the Apalachicola Bay area of Florida identified via extensive ground surveys and photointerpretation of aerial imagery from 2018 to 2019.

In the summers of 1982 through 1985, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted geologic studies Bureau of Land Management Wilderness Study Areas on the Kern Plateau as well as the U.S. Forest Service South Sierra Wilderness and South Sierra Roadless Area. These study areas are underlain mostly by granitic rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholith. In support of geologic mapping and mineral-resource assessment, 74 samples were analyzed for major-element oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, Fe Total, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O, TiO2, P2O5, and MnO) by X-ray fluorescence (XRF). This table gives the results of those analyses.

Widespread nitrate contamination of groundwater in agricultural areas poses a major challenge to sustainable water resources. Efficient analysis of nitrate fluxes across large regions also remains difficult. This study introduces a method of characterizing nitrate transport processes continuously across regional unsaturated zones and groundwater based on surrogate, machine-learning metamodels of an N flux process-based model. The metamodels used boosted regression trees (BRTs) to relate mappable variables to parameters and outputs of a “vertical flux method” (VFM) applied in the Fox-Wolf-Peshtigo (FWP) area in Wisconsin. In this context, the metamodels are upscaling the VFM results throughout the region, and the...
This data release provides a set of Hydrological Simulation Program--Fortran (HSPF) model files representing five EPA-selected future climate change scenarios for the Farmington River Basin in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Output from these models are intended for use as input to EPA Watershed Management Optimization Support Tool (WMOST) modeling. Climate scenarios, based on 2036-2065 changes from 1975-2004 for Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5, model the effects of air temperature and precipitation changes (in degrees F for air temperature, in percent for precipitation) made to the input historical meteorological time series for 1975-2004. Meteorological data are from the following climate...
