This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides surface water quality and groundwater elevation data collected by USGS personnel within the Central Pine Barrens (CPB) Region of Suffolk County, New York, from October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022. The data were collected in cooperation with the Central Pine Barrens Commission and the Town of Brookhaven as part of a comprehensive water resources monitoring program during 2017 to 2023. Water quality and quality assurance data from seven sites on two rivers (Carmans River- five sites and Peconic River- two sites) in the CPB are included. Carmans River sites were sampled four times throughout the year (fall, winter, spring, and summer) and Peconic River...

From April 2013 to August 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Town of Enfield and the Tompkins County Planning Department, collected horizontal-to-vertical seismic soundings at 69 locations in the Enfield Creek valley to help determine thickness of the unconsolidated deposits and depth to bedrock. The HVSR technique, commonly referred to as the passive-seismic method, is used to estimate the thickness of unconsolidated sediments and the depth to bedrock (Lane and others, 2008). The passive-seismic method uses a single, broad-band three-component (two horizontal and one vertical) seismometer to record ambient seismic noise. In areas that have a strong acoustic contrast between the bedrock and...
This data release contains geospatial data defining estimates of the depth to water and water-table altitude in the upper glacial and Magothy Aquifers, the potentiometric surface of the confined Magothy and Jameco Aquifers, and the potentiometric surface of the Lloyd and North Shore Aquifers on Long Island, New York. Estimates are based on 502 water-level measurements made in wells across Long Island during March-April 2006. Water-table contours were interpolated using measurements from 341 wells screened in the upper glacial aquifer or shallow Magothy Aquifer. Potentiometric-surface contours in the confined Magothy and hydraulically connected Jameco Aquifer were interpolated using measurements from 102 wells. Potentiometric-surface...

This data release documents streambed sediment thickness in the Neversink watershed (NY) as determined by field observations and HVSR passive seismic measurements, and were collected as an extension of a previous data set collected in the same watershed (see Associated Items). These measurements were made between May 17, 2021 and May 21, 2021 using MOHO Tromino three-component seismometers (MOHO, S.R.L.). Seismic observations were converted to sediment thickness (depth to bedrock, meters) using the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method. Resonance frequencies were determined from time domain data using GRILLA (MOHO, S.R.L.) software and converted to inferred depth to bedrock for a range of possible...

This geospatial data set contains groundwater level contours, well locations, and associated metadata that characterize the potentiometric surface near the Rondout pressure-tunnel in High Falls, New York during November 5–7, 2019, and January 21–22, 2020. The pressure tunnel was shut down and partially dewatered for 74 days from November 11, 2019, to January 23, 2020, for inspection and repairs.

This data release contains frequency domain electromagnetic (FDEM) data collected during discrete times between July 2019 to October 2022 near Lake Placid, NY as part of a multi-method effort to monitor the effects of different road salt treatments on groundwater and the surrounding surface water (West Branch Ausable River). The FDEM instrument used was a Geophex GEM-2; a broadband sensor that measures the bulk conductivity and magnetic susceptibility of the subsurface down to approximately 5 meters (16.4 feet) depth. The instrument is hand carried by a single operator and data are collected at walking speeds. Data were repeatedly collected during each campaign at the three sites nicknamed for the planned road salt...

Carmans River sites were sampled four times throughout the year (fall, winter, spring, and summer) and Peconic River sites were sampled twice...

This data release contains results of a high-water mark survey across Upstate New York following flash flooding during July 9-10, 2023. The survey was conducted between July 12 and September 20, 2023 by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) personnel, and is based on surveyed elevations of mud, debris, and seed lines (Koenig and others, 2016) left by the flooding. Real-time and static Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveying (Rydlund and Densmore, 2012), combined with differential leveling (Kenney, 2010), were used to determine high-water mark elevations at 186 locations. Additional data associated with the July 2023 flooding, such as photos of the survey locations, can be found in the USGS Flood Event Viewer,...

This data release contains digital hydrogeologic datasets compiled for eight valley-fill aquifer systems in upstate New York. The data sets include input data necessary to create and interpolate the hydrogeologic framework of the aquifers and surrounding till-covered uplands. Input data is provided as point feature classes and georeferenced files of previously published reports along with the digitized data as line or polygon feature classes. Feature class datasets are provided for convenience and may contain subtle differences to shapefiles due to inherent differences in file types. The data release is composed of eight child items, one for each valley-fill area. Each child item contains the data pertaining...
This data release contains observed water-level recovery data in 52 wells, matched to theoretical type curves defined by postulated values of aquifer transmissivity and storage, that together constitute the database for USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2020-5087, "Transmissivity Estimated from Brief Aquifer Tests of Domestic Wells and Compared with Bedrock Lithofacies and Position on Hillsides in the Appalachian Plateau of New York." The water-level recovery data were collected after 13 to 132 seconds of pumping. Five of the wells were also test-pumped for longer periods. The wells tested penetrated bedrock outside of major valleys in the eastern part of the Susquehanna River watershed in New York.
