From 2010 through 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, collected horizontal-to-vertical seismic soundings at 100 locations in upstate New York and 1 location in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania to evaluate the technique (control-point measurements) and to support aquifer-mapping projects (Heisig, 2012, 2015). The HVSR technique, commonly referred to as the passive-seismic method, is used to estimate the thickness of unconsolidated sediments and the depth to bedrock (Lane and others, 2008; Fairchild and others, 2013). The passive-seismic method uses a single, broad-band three-component (two horizontal and one vertical) seismometer to record...

This data release contains results of a high-water mark survey across Upstate New York following flash flooding during July 9-10, 2023. The survey was conducted between July 12 and September 20, 2023 by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) personnel, and is based on surveyed elevations of mud, debris, and seed lines (Koenig and others, 2016) left by the flooding. Real-time and static Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveying (Rydlund and Densmore, 2012), combined with differential leveling (Kenney, 2010), were used to determine high-water mark elevations at 186 locations. Additional data associated with the July 2023 flooding, such as photos of the survey locations, can be found in the USGS Flood Event Viewer,...

While nest attentiveness plays a critical role in the reproductive success of avian species, little is known regarding the nest attentiveness patterns of many species during incubation. However, improvements in both video monitoring and temperature logging devices present an opportunity to improve our understanding of this aspect of avian behavior. To evaluate the ability of these technologies to document fine scale behaviors during incubation we monitored 13 nests across two Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) breeding colonies with a paired video camera - temperature logger approach, while monitoring 63 additional nests with temperature loggers alone. We also monitored nests and recorded hatching success, allowing us...

A total of 119 passive seismic soundings were collected with Tromino (MoHo s.r.l.) 3-axis seismometers in the Fountain Creek area to partially refine alluvial aquifer thickness (depth to bedrock) estimates, particularly over known or suspected paleochannels. Data were collected during June 21-24, 2021 with a team of 4-5 people, each equipped with a Tromino Blu or Tromino 3G passive seismometer. A subset of the data included measurements made for shear velocity calibration; this included data collected at 10 well sites where depth to bedrock was available from driller's logs, and 3 sites above cutbanks where bedrock outcropped and the thickness of alluvial sediments could be directly measured. Data were processed...

Twenty-six time-domain electromagnetic (TDEM) soundings were collected on Shelter Island, New York between March of 2017 and October of 2018. Soundings were collected using the Geonics ProTEM and ABEM WalkTEM acquisition systems. Depending on the size of the site, one of the following square-loop transmitter geometries was used: 1) 20 by 20 meter, 2) 40 by 40 meter, or 3) 100 by 100 meter. A high-frequency receiver with an effective area of 31.4 m^2 was used with the Geonics ProTEM system. With the ABEM WalkTEM system, a central induction array was used with two square receiver loops (0.5 by 0.5 meters and 10 by 10 meters) setup within the transmitter loop; the two receiver loops created effective receiver areas...

In 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), began an appraisal of the sand and gravel aquifers within the Owasco Inlet watershed, which covers about 117 square miles (mi2) and drains north directly to Owasco Lake, one of New York’s Finger Lakes. About three-quarters of the watershed is within Cayuga County; the remaining area (southern end) is in Tompkins County. The Owasco Inlet valley stretches about 18 miles (mi) from Owasco Lake south to the divide at Freeville. Major tributaries include Hemlock Creek on the west side of the watershed and Dresserville and Decker Creeks on the east side. A variety of data were compiled,...
