Proliferation of cheatgrass and other exotic annual grasses such as medusahead and ventenata are a major environmental concern and operational problem for roadsides in Idaho. These annual grasses are highly flammable and they shorten fire-return intervals. Flammable vegetation is particularly hazardous in roadsides because of proximity to a ready source of ignition, and fires that start on roadsides can spread into adjacent public lands and urban communities with sprawling home development, causing extensive and expensive damage and degradation to wildlife habitat, rangelands, private or public property, utilities, etc. Thus, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has a strong interest in preventing roadside...

This dataset consists of raster geotiff outputs of relative environmental favorability for coral growth and survival in the United States territories of Guam and American Samoa across 3 climate scenarios: Present, Intermediate Emissions (Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5), and Worst Case Emissions (Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5). These datasets were generated from a synthesis of spatial variability in many environmental conditions, including thermal stress, wave power, irradiance, chlorophyll concentrations, macroalgal cover, calcite concentrations, turbidity, and erosion. Input conditions were classified as “Managed” or “Non-managed” based on whether the condition could be managed at the island...

Geodatabases were developed to compile mapped relative abundance raster data sets for 25 species/species groups, and also Curve Fit regression tool adjusted R-squared, standard error, y-intercept, and slope spatial outputs for wild celery (Vallisneria americana), wild rice (Zizania aquatica) and arrowhead (one raster for the sum of Sagittaria rigida and Sagittaria latifolia) for pools 4, 8, and 13 on the Upper Mississippi River system from 1998-2019.

This data release documents socioeconomic and water demand indicators for the Mekong River delta region. The Mekong River provides many valuable benefits to the 60 million Southeast Asian residents living in its Basin. Maintaining adequate supplies of water in the Mekong River Basin is vital for food security. However, the Mekong River Basin is increasingly stressed by infrastructure development, growing water demands, and land cover change, in addition to climate change. Freshwater demands and the capacity to respond to changing resource availability were estimated to assess vulnerability to changes in water availability in provinces of the Mekong River delta region along the Cambodia-Vietnam border. Water demands...

This dataset includes laboratory analyses of surface water samples and sediment trap material collected from (1) locations upstream, downstream, and within the Hells Canyon Complex (Idaho, Oregon) of the Snake River, (2) tributaries of the Snake River, and (3) two reservoirs near Boise, Idaho, from 2014 to 2022. The study area spans approximately 232 river miles of the Snake River and includes: two sites on the main stem of the Snake River upstream of the Hells Canyon Complex (Snake River mile 447.6, 399.0, and 345.6), six sites within Brownlee Reservoir (Snake River mile 318, 314, 310, 305, 300, and 286), one site within Oxbow Reservoir (Snake River mile 273), two sites within Hells Canyon Reservoir (Snake River...

To support floodplain forest research and management actions on the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS), contiguous forested areas in the UMRS floodplain were developed and a wide range of attributes were created that define basic ecosystem conditions within such forested areas. The data allows users to query on a set of attributes (e.g., size, shape, inundation characteristics, etc…) to visualize the distribution of various ecological conditions. In addition, the data allow for future data analyses of relationships among different ecological conditions and other data, such as animal and plant population distributions. This data set is based upon the 2020 land cover/land use data developed by the Upper Mississippi...

Estimates of the magnitude of peak-flows were updated for the 50-, 20-, 10-, 4-, 2-, 1-, 0.5-, and 0.2-percent chance exceedance levels for 91 rural, unregulated streamgaging stations on the main island of Puerto Rico. These stations required 10 or more years of annual peak-flow record, using data to 2017, for inclusion in the study. The magnitude and frequency of floods at selected streamgages in Puerto Rico were estimated using the U.S. Geological Survey PeakFQ program and updated methods outlined in Bulletin 17C (England and others, 2018). Regional regression equations were calculated to estimate flood frequency statistics at ungaged locations using selected basin characteristics as explanatory variables. These...

Most of the world’s river-floodplain ecosystems are simultaneously undergoing modifications to their hydrological regimes and experiencing species invasions, making it unclear whether invasive species are the main drivers of ecosystem change or simply responding to changes in the hydrological regime. We simulated patterns of forest recruitment and succession in a 2200 ha portion of the Upper Mississippi River floodplain with and without removal of invasive Phalaris arundinacea and under two different future 100-year hydrological scenarios: a future maintaining the average flooding conditions of the past 40 years (random) and a future that projects an observed upward 40-year trend in flooding conditions forward (trending)....

To improve flood-frequency estimates at rural streams in Mississippi, annual exceedance probability flows at gaged streams in Mississippi and regional-regression equations, used to estimate annual exceedance probability (AEP) flows for ungaged streams in Mississippi, were developed by using current geospatial data, additional statistical methods, and annual peak-flow data through the 2013 water year. The regional-regression equations were derived from statistical analyses of peak-flow data, basin characteristics associated with 281 streamgages, the generalized skew from Bulletin 17B (Interagency Advisory Committee on Water Data, 1982), and a newly developed study-specific skew for select four-digit hydrologic unit...
Flow-duration statistics at the 99th, 98th, 95th, 90th, 80th, 70th, 60th, and 50th percent exceedance probabilities and annual n-day low-flow statistics for the 1-, 7-, 14-, and 30-day mean low flows with 2-year (0.5 nonexceedance probability), 5-year (0.2 nonexceedance probability), and 10-year (0.1 nonexceedance probability) recurrence intervals were computed for 28 selected streamflow gaging stations in Puerto Rico. The 28 selected streamflow gaging stations were required to have 10 or more years of daily mean streamflow data through water year 2018. The flow-duration statistics and n-day low-flow frequencies were computed using the U.S. Geological Survey program, SWToolbox. Regional regression equations were...

Translocating individuals of Eleutherodactylus frogs to alternative, suitable habitat is an adaptation strategy designed to minimize the impact of projected warming and drying in Puerto Rico. The action increases species persistence by increasing spatial redundancy, but it could also be used to supplement extant populations. We released 34 Eleutherodactylus coqui to determine initial, post-release survival under two treatments – non-translocated (N = 14), and translocated (N=20) to a different location 0.8 km away, but sharing similar habitat and environmental conditions. We defined “initial” as the first 17 days post-release, a period where we hypothesized that translocated individuals would have lower survival...
