Yellowstone National Park (YNP; Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, USA) contains more than 10,000 hydrothermal features, several lakes, and four major watersheds. For more than 140 years, researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey and other scientific institutions have investigated the chemical compositions of hot springs, geysers, fumaroles, mud pots, streams, rivers, and lakes in YNP and surrounding areas. Water chemistry studies have revealed a range of compositions including waters with pH values ranging from about 1 to 10, surface temperatures from ambient to superheated values of 95°C, and elevated concentrations of silica, lithium, boron, fluoride, mercury, and arsenic. Hydrogeochemical data from YNP research have...

These data are comprised of measurements of elements (e.g., uranium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, etc.), major anions (chloride, nitrite+nitrate as nitrogen, sulfate, etc.), organic carbon, and general water quality characteristics in Pinyon Plain Mine containment pond water, invertebrate, vegetation and sediment samples, collected in calendar year 2022.

This dataset includes benthic algae community composition data in the Colorado River near Cameo, Colorado, from 2022-23. Benthic algae were identified as genus or species, and biomass and biovolume were provided for taxa. Data collection was funded by the U.S. Geological Survey Water Mission Area as part of the Next Generation Water Observing System Upper Colorado River project.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program, through its Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) element, collected aerial imagery of the systemic Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) during the summer of 2020. A Land Cover/Land Use (LCU) spatial database was developed based on the 2020 aerial imagery, which adds a fourth systemic-wide database to the existing 1989, 2000, and 2010/11 LCU databases. These data have been used to create a variety of products, one of which is a data set used to classify aquatic areas. The 2020 aquatic areas data sets were created by first generalizing the available land cover/use data into a land/water data set, then reinterpreting the areas classified...

The characteristics, discharge, and water quality of springs and seeps, at the Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC) were evaluated during 2015 and 2016. Geophysical, hydrological, and water-quality data were used to help characterize and document a baseline of current (2016) hydrologic conditions and water quality of springs and seeps located on the NTC. Hydrologic methods used in this study included discrete discharge measurements to evaluate surface flow from the springs, and temperature measurements to trace groundwater movement beneath the springs. This data release contains discharge measurements and temperature data at four springs: Garlic, Bitter, Jack Spring East, and Jack Spring West.

This map layer contains the shallowest principal aquifers of the conterminous United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, portrayed as polygons. The map layer was developed as part of the effort to produce the maps published at 1:2,500,000 in the printed series "Ground Water Atlas of the United States". The published maps contain base and cultural features not included in these data. This is a replacement for the July 1998 map layer called Principal Aquifers of the 48 Conterminous United States.

These data comprise air, plant (creosote bush, Larrea tridentata), and unsaturated-zone tritium measurements and plant metrics collected during 2012 to 2016 from three sampling areas at the Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS) near Beatty, Nevada: (1) within a low-level radioactive waste facility, (2) buffer area adjacent to the waste facility, and (3) reference area 3 kilometers from the waste facility. Plant metrics include foliage-water content and canopy and stem dimensions. Supporting information includes a list of publications that provide descriptions of methods used to collect the data and results of previous tritium research at the ADRS. All data and supporting information are compiled in an electronic...

The release of elements of concern (EoC) to surface water can involve both natural and anthropogenic sources. Elevated EoC concentrations can pose a risk to human health, wildlife, and ecosystem health, with the modes of toxicity and extent of risk varying as a function of the specific element, its chemical form and the matrix with which it is associated (for example, dissolved versus particulate). As part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Mission Area (WMA) Water Quality Processes Program, the Proxies (Surrogate) Project was created, in part, to develop models that can be used to estimate the concentration of EoC in riverine surface water at spatial scales ranging from (sub)basin to multi-basin. Three...
