Monitoring of vitamin B1 (thiamine) in the eggs of lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) collected from lakes Huron and Michigan has been conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey since the mid-1990’s. The results of this monitoring effort have been used by natural resource management agencies and native American tribes within the Great Lakes basin to evaluate the reproductive health of lake trout. The data in this release are the thiamine concentrations measured in lake trout collected from 1996-2018. Results are reported as total thiamine (nmol/g-egg), collection site, lake, year collected, and reference to the analysis methods.

A long-term, multiseason, fish egg sampling program is conducted annually on the Detroit, Saint Clair, and Saint Marys rivers to identify where productive fish spawning habitat currently exists and evaluate habitat restoration projects. Egg mats were placed on the river bottom during the spring and fall at historic spawning areas, candidate fish spawning habitat restoration sites, and completed spawning habitat restoration sites throughout the rivers. Widespread evidence was found of lithophilic spawning by numerous native fish species, including walleye (Sander vitreus), lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), suckers (Family: Catostomidae), and trout-perch (Percopsis omiscomaycus)....

This data contains coordinate locations for suspected historical spawning locations of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) and cisco (Coregonus artedi) across the Lake Erie basin, including the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, and the St. Clair River. Data points were summarized using ArcGIS 10.5. Data came from published and unpublished sources cited in the Atlas of the Spawning and Nursery Areas of Great Lakes Fishes (Goodyear et al. 1982) and other sources as described. Data points included were specific locations described as having the presence of eggs or spawning fish. Pseudo-absence data used for comparison purposes are also provided in this data release. Grass Carp Ctenopharyngodon idella was imported to the United States in the 1960s for research into its usefulness as a biocontrol agent for nuisance aquatic vegetation. Escapees and intentionally stocked individuals founded wild, spawning populations in the Mississippi River and tributaries to the Laurentian Great Lakes. USGS-led research on the Sandusky River, a tributary to Lake Erie, demonstrated spawning of Grass Carp in 2015. In 2018, sampling with ichthyoplankton nets in the Sandusky River 11-13 June produced thousands of suspected fertilized Grass Carp eggs. These data include egg diameter estimates from Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) eggs collected during bongo net sampling in the Huron River (Ohio; 41.3305, -82.5812) on May 23, 2022 near Milan, Ohio. Egg diameters were estimated from photographs using proportional relationships of pixel lengths with a known length scale bar in millimeters. Given that eggs were not perfectly spherical, egg diameters were measured across two perpendicular axes and an average was calculated to represent an estimate of egg diameter (mm).

These data were gathered from published and unpublished sources cited in the Atlas of the Spawning and Nursery Areas of Great Lakes Fishes (Goodyear et al. 1982) and other sources as described. We define "spawning locations" as areas having eggs or spawning fish present. When available the data also contain substrate and depth information. Pseudo-absence data used for comparison purposes are also provided in this data release. Data points were summarized using ArcGIS 10.5
