This is a geochemical data set from the reanalysis of 44 rock samples collected between 1966 and 1970, and 107 sediment samples collected in 1966 and 1967. These samples were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey for a study investigating the mineral resources of the Idaho Primitive Area (Cater et al., 1973). The samples are from the Lower Middle Fork of the Salmon River, including the tributaries of Big Creek, Camas Creek, Brush Creek, Wilson Creek, Waterfall Creek, Ship Island Creek, Reese Creek, Stoddard Creek, and Papoose Creek. The overall objective of this study is to characterize the regional impact of legacy mining for the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area. Mary P. Rossillon (1981) explored...

This data release provides digital flight-line and gridded data for a high-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric survey over the region surrounding the Wet Mountains of southern Colorado, including parts of Custer and Fremont Counties. Data for this survey were collected by Sander Geophysics Limited International (SGL) under contract with the USGS. The survey was flown in June and July of 2021 using a helicopter equipped with a magnetometer mounted in a stinger extending from the nose of the aircraft and a gamma-ray spectrometer stowed onboard. The helicopter pilots followed pre-planned flight paths in a grid-like pattern, with east-west lines spaced 150 meters apart and north-south lines spaced 1,000 meters...

Petroleum within unconventional source-rock reservoirs is hosted in organic matter and mineral pore space as well as in voids and microfractures. Recent work has shown that for source-rock reservoirs in the dry gas window, significant portions of methane (CH4), the main component of petroleum at elevated maturities, can be stored within fine organic matter porosity. However, within reservoirs at lower thermal maturities (e.g., peak oil or wet-gas conditions), the distribution and behavior of CH4 and the higher alkanes that comprise gas condensates across pore sizes is unclear, especially for fine pores with diameters <50 nm. Understanding CH4 within these settings provides insight for petroleum generation, movement,...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected rock magnetic susceptibility and density measurements to understand the causative sources of airborne magnetic and ground gravity survey anomalies in the Wet Mountains, Colorado. A total of 609 magnetic susceptibility and 86 density measurements were collected from outcrops and hand samples, respectively, from July 2022 to June 2023. These measurements aid the interpretation of newly collected geophysical data to identify concealed Ediacaran-Ordovician alkaline igneous features and potential rare earth element deposits. On average, 16 magnetic susceptibility and 4 density measurements were taken from each outcrop/hand sample to best represent the lithology. Outcrop/sample...
The Reef Package is a sequence of coarse-grained cumulates that host the J-M Reef Pd-Pt deposit in the Stillwater Complex of Montana. The top of the Reef Package marks the top of economic-grade platinum-group element mineralization and is identified by a distinct change in rock fabric, from the coarse-grained rocks of the Reef Package to finer-grained cumulates in the hanging wall. This dataset tabulates whole-rock major, minor, and trace element geochemistry of rock samples collected from diamond drill holes that intersect the textural discontinuity at the top of the Reef Package from the underground working of the Stillwater Mine. The dataset also tabulates rock fabric data collected by electron backscatter diffraction...

This dataset includes photographic images of thin sections made from xenolith samples collected from the Sliderock Mountain and Susie Peak plutons, Montana, along with a shapefile representing the locations of the samples. The plutons are located north of the Stillwater Complex, Montana, which is exposed along the northern side of the Beartooth Mountains in Montana. To the north of the Stillwater Complex, a gravity anomaly is located where Phanerozoic rocks may unconformably overlie the complex. These Phanerozoic rocks are intruded by Cretaceous plutons that have gabbroid inclusions that resemble other metamorphosed rocks of the Stillwater Complex. Samples of the inclusions were collected, and thin sections were...

A mineral resource assessment was performed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to assess the potential of undiscovered skarn-hosted tungsten resources in the Northern Rocky Mountain region of eastern Idaho and western Montana. This region has seen moderate tungsten trioxide (WO3) production in the past from a variety of mineralization styles including skarn, vein and replacement, and wolframite-quartz veins. The geology of the area is dominated by large plutons of Cretaceous to Tertiary age, emplaced into a belt of sedimentary rock ranging from Mesoproterozoic to Permian age, and affected by tectonism related to the Sevier and later Laramide orogenies. Known tungsten (W) skarn mineral sites are associated with...

In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessed the potential for undiscovered, technically recoverable continuous (unconventional) oil and gas resources in the Mowry Shale in the Wind River Basin Province (Finn and others, 2021). To better characterize the source rock potential of the Mowry Shale and associated strata, 129 samples were collected from 45 wells from the well cuttings collection stored at the USGS Core Research Center in Lakewood, Colorado. The sampled wells are located along the margins of the basin in order to obtain samples that were not subjected to the effects of deep burial and subsequent organic carbon loss due to thermal maturation (Daly and Edman, 1987) (fig. 1). One hundred samples are...

Research and surveillance reports have documented a significant increase in coal workers' pneumoconiosis, including the most severe forms of progressive massive fibrosis and rapidly progressive pneumoconiosis in U.S. coal miners, particularly those in Appalachian coalfields. Several possible explanations for these observations include excessive exposures to total respirable dust, increased exposure to freshly fractured silica and silicates, or greater exposure to smaller particles that may be the result of changing mining practices. This dataset contains the chemical and morphological characteristics of particulate matter retrieved from lung tissue slices of historical and contemporary miners.
This dataset includes photographic images of thin sections of drill core from the Stillwater Complex, Montana, along with a shapefile representing the location of the drill hole. The core was drilled in order to study contact-type copper and nickel sulfide mineralization in the Stillwater Complex. The images of the entire thin section, both in plane- and cross-polarized light, were taken using a high-resolution digital camera on a macro stand. Each zip file, named with the drill hole identification number, contains the images for a single drill hole. In response to file size restrictions, the data were organized into two parts. The "p1" and "p2" folder designations represent parts 1 and 2. The data in each zip file...
