This Benthic Invertebrate Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the benthic invertebrates sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), the invertebrate samples were taken from sediments remaining from the sediment analysis. Identification of the invertebrates was completed by the same invertebrate taxonomist for both the 1998-2000 evaluation and 1986-87 historical evaluation (Smith et al. 1994) for increased consistency. This table contains Carbon and Nitrogen stable isotope data for Silver Chub (Macrhybopsis storeriana), dreissenid mussels, and Hexagenia spp. mayflies from western Lake Erie in 2014. Samples were collected between May and September 2014 as part of both routine monitoring and a lake-wide coordinated monitoring effort. Silver Chub were collected in trawls; Hexagenia and Dreissenids were captured in benthic samples and taken from Silver Chub diets.

These data are potentially useful to those studying recovery and restoration of Silver Chub in Lake Erie. These data were collected as part of routine trawl surveys in western Lake Erie. This Sediment Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the sediments sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), sediment collections were a composite of at least five randomly selected samples collected from each site. Per an internal summary report, sediment samples were collected using a stainless steel Eckman dredge. This data set, compiled by the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station, provides near-bottom measurements of temperature and dissolved oxygen for the Central Basin of Lake Erie. Data were recorded by self-contained environmental data loggers (PME, Inc., MiniDOT data loggers). The data loggers were deployed to collect data during August 2021 through November 2022 to better understand how hypoxia develops and influences fish habitat quality during lake stratification. Densities of Hexagenia spp. mayfly nymphs by age class are presented from 1999 through 2014. This range is significant in that it includes the year of peak abundance following recovery from ~4 decades of near extirpation (~1960 through the mid-1990s) through a period of decline. This range overlaps with fluctuations in abundance of other potentially relevant species, such as Round Goby and Dreissena spp. mussels. A novelty of these data is the separation of age classes, which provides for potentially novel approaches to assessing mayfly trends.

Lake Erie Biological Station (LEBS), located in Sandusky, Ohio, is a field station of the USGS Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). The Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, housed at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) was developed during a reevaluation of Lake Erie Areas of Concern (AOCs) from 1998-2000. These AOCs were recognized as such by the International Joint Commission (IJC) of the United States and Canada due to their severe water pollution problems. The dataset includes data from both the 1998-2000 reevaluation as well as data from other historical evaluations from the 1980’s to mid-1990’s for comparison where available. The development of a reliable method of age estimation for Grass Carp is necessary for the successful management of this invasive species. Multiple federal and state agencies with assistance from commercial fishers collected adult Grass Carp from 2012 to 2018. Ossified parts were collected from these fish, and age estimates from them were compared to develop an age estimation method. Here we provide the data used in that effort.
The Great Lakes Research Vessel Catch (RVCAT) database is managed at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). RVCAT has been used as the primary data collection tool aboard the GLSC’s research vessel operations across the Great Lakes. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), fish were sampled for identification and measurement of length and weight. Identification of fish were done by the same biologists for both the 1998-2000 data and the 1986-87 historical data (Smith et al. 1994). In 2014, the USGS Lake Erie Biological Station participated in the Coordinated Science and Monitoring Initiative (CMSI) program, a program founded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Environment Canada in the 1990s as a means to focus collaborative research attention on one of the five Great Lakes each year (on a rotating schedule) as a means to increase scientific knowledge for Great Lakes restoration. Diet and estimated ages of Silver Chub (Macrhybopsis storeriana) collected by the US Geological Survey in western Lake Erie in 2014 are presented. Fish were frozen in the field at -20 C and dissected in the lab. Ages were estimated by one experienced biologist who estimated ages twice, then reconciled age estimates when the two age estimates differed. Diet taxa were enumerated, dried individually at 60 F until stable weight was achieved (~24-48 hrs), then weighed. Zero weights for non-zero counts indicates dry weight was below detection limit of the scale used.
