Heavy rainfall occurred across Louisiana during March 8-19, 2016, as a result of a massive, slow-moving southward dip in the jet stream, which moved eastward across Mexico, then neared the Gulf Coast, funneling deep tropical moisture into parts of the Gulf States and the Mississippi River Valley. The storm caused major flooding in north-central and southeastern Louisiana. This dataset contains an inventory of South Carolina U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamgages evaluated in 2017 as part of gage network gap assessment. Both continuous record and crest stage gages are included in this dataset. The data are grouped into three categories: rural streamgages with equal to or greater than 10 years of peak-flow data, rural streamgages with less than 10 years of peak-flow data, and urban streamgages.

These data were compiled for a manuscript in which 1) we develop a water temperature model for the major river segments and tributaries of the Colorado River basin, including the Colorado, Green, Yampa, White, and San Juan rivers; 2) we link modeled water temperature to fish population data to predict the probability native and nonnative species will be common in the future in a warming climate; and 3) assess the degree to which dams create thermal discontinuity in summer in river segments across the western US. This work provides a flexible and scalable framework to assess the impacts of climate change on streamflow and stream temperature within the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NALCC) region. This is accomplished through use of lumped parameter, physically-based, conceptual hydrologic and stream temperature models formulated in a hierarchical Bayesian framework. This allows for model predictions of streamflow and temperature at ungaged locations and a formal accounting of model estimate uncertainty at each location, something not previously achieved in these models. WaSSI (Water Supply Stress Index) predicts how climate, land cover, and human population change may impact water availability and carbon sequestration at the watershed level (about the size of a county) across the lower 48 United States. WaSSI users can select and adjust temperature, precipitation, land cover, and water use factors to simulate change scenarios for any timeframe from 1961 through the year 2100. This project will address species-habitat relationships for a priority aquatic system for the GCPO LCC, Mainstem Big Rivers. Specifically, the project will collect subsurface aquatic habitat data using side-scan sonar and high resolution bathymetry data in the Pearl River system of Louisiana. This project expands on current work ongoing in the Pearl River, and would extend habitat data collection for the purposes of making recommendations on restoration of aquatic habitat for species endpoints in this aquatic system. This project directly addresses landscape conservation design and will be used to inform Adaptation Strategies.

In large river ecosystems, the timing, extent, duration and frequency of floodplain inundation greatly affect the quality of fish and wildlife habitat and the supply of important ecosystem goods and services. Seasonal high flows provide connectivity from the river to the floodplain, and seasonal inundation of the floodplain governs ecosystem structure and function.
