This Benthic Invertebrate Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the benthic invertebrates sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), the invertebrate samples were taken from sediments remaining from the sediment analysis. Identification of the invertebrates was completed by the same invertebrate taxonomist for both the 1998-2000 evaluation and 1986-87 historical evaluation (Smith et al. 1994) for increased consistency. Oligochaetes were identified to species if possible, chironomids were identified to genus, as adult specimens are needed for specific identification, and other taxa...
This dataset was created as part of the USGS Afghanistan Project investigating artisanal and small-scale mining activity. Clay mining for brick making purposes represents a small but important segment of the mineral extraction industry in Kabul, Afghanistan. Over the past several decades Kabul has grown from a relatively small city, with a 1970 population of less than 500,000 people, to a sprawling urban center with approximately 4.2 million people in 2020 (CIA 2020). Population growth has expanded the need for housing, commercial, and industrial buildings, and associated infrastructure. This has greatly increased demand for bricks, the primary construction material of the region. In this study, very high-resolution...

LiDAR scans were taken using a tripod mounted Riegl VZ-400 scanning LiDAR. The tripod was set up such that the scanner was between 1.5 and 2.5 m tall. The VZ-400 is a near infrared (1550 nm) scanner. Geometric control was achieved using a pair of Trimble RB GPS antennae, one mounted on the LiDAR scanner (rover) and the other setup as a base station. Before taking a LiDAR scan, the VZ-400 would use the GPSs to fix a real time kinematic (RTK) solution for the scanner’s location and then use that position (scan position) as a reference for LiDAR returns. Post processing was done using RIScan-Pro version 2 (scanner specific software). Also, in post-processing, overlapping areas of point clouds were merged and inaccuracies...
A mineral resource assessment for tungsten, a critical mineral commodity (see 'Related External Resources' section below) for the United States, was carried out by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for a portion of the Great Basin region, in western Nevada and eastern California, between latitudes 36N and 42N and longitudes 116W and 120W. This study (Lederer and others, in review) integrates data from several sources, including geologic, geochemical, geophysical, remote sensing, watershed analysis, and mining with recently developed grade and tonnage models, expert estimates, and software tools and analyses to generate probabilistic estimates of undiscovered tungsten skarn resources. The assessment was conducted...

This part of the release provides an updated georeferenced catalog of limestone boulders and cobbles pertaining to extreme waves on Anegada, a low Caribbean island perched south of the Puerto Rico Trench. Tabulated are 660 limestone clasts, along with clast dimensions and long-axis trend in many instances. Fewer than one-fifth of the clasts were reported previously in https://doi.org/10.1007/s11069-011-9725-8 and https://doi.org/10.1130/GES01356.1. Most were surveyed in 2017.
This Sediment Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the sediments sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), sediment collections were a composite of at least five randomly selected samples collected from each site. Per an internal summary report, sediment samples were collected using a stainless steel Eckman dredge. Analytical methods and QA/QC were directed by the Patuxent Analytical Control Facility (PACF) of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Per Dora Passino-Reader, the Geochemical & Environmental Research Group at Texas A&M University, College Station performed the analytical chemistry...
Sand covers a significant portion of the Earth’s surface, including the Grand Falls area of Coconino County, AZ. The vadose zone (unsaturated zone) in a soil is of particular interest because it is broadly applicable to desert soils, which are seldom saturated and usually dry. In the absence of strong geothermal heating, the near-surface soil temperature profile is expected to exhibit maximum variation (for a given diurnal period) at the surface, with the diurnal variations becoming successively damped with depth. The temperature at a given depth is the result of diffusive heat transport vertically within the soil column. Water vapor also is expected to be transported via diffusion through the soil column [1]. We...

In this study, we determined the carbon balance in the Great Dismal Swamp, a large forested peatland in the southeastern USA, which has been drained for over two hundred years and now is being restored through hydrologic management. We modeled future net ecosystem carbon balance over 100 years (2012 to 2112) using in situ field observations paired with simulations of water-table depth. The three scenarios used in the model were baseline conditions, flooded/wet conditions, and drained/dry conditions, which represent a range of potential management actions and climate conditions at the Great Dismal Swamp. This U.S. Geological Survey Data Release provides the modeled output estimating the net ecosystem carbon balance,...

Sulfide- and chromite-bearing samples of the Basal and Ultramafic series of the Stillwater Complex are known to contain elevated concentrations of platinum-group elements (PGE). Thin sections were prepared from drill core and surface samples from the Chrome and Iron Mountain areas. Core samples are from exploration drilling programs by AMAX in the 1960s and 1970s and Beartooth Platinum in 2004-2007. The degree to which PGE occur in the rocks as discrete platinum-group minerals was investigated using a TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyser (TIMA-X) based on a TESCAN MIRA 3 field-emission scanning electron microscope coupled with an EDAX energy-dispersive spectrometer. TIMA-X combines backscattered electron (BSE) imaging...
This dataset includes lignin phenol monomer concentrations normalized to 100 mg of organic carbon. These analyses were conducted on select intervals from peat cores collected at the Alligator River (AR) and Great Dismal Swamp (GDS) National Wildlife Refuges in North Carolina and Virginia/North Carolina, USA, respectively. The eight lignin phenol monomers provide unique proxy information on the source, character, and state of decomposition of soil organic matter. Peat cores from the GDS were collected from three main forest communities; pocosin (POC; dominated by pond pine in the canopy and shrubs), Atlantic white cedar (AWC: called CDR to differentiate from the AR cores), and red maple-black gum (MPL). The GDS has...

The Harrat Rahat volcanic field, located in the west-central part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is the largest of 15 harrats (Arabic for 'volcanic field') hosted within the Arabian plate. Harrat Rahat is 50 to 75 km wide (east-west) and 300 km long (north-south), covering an area of approximately 20,000 square kilometers and encompassing more than 900 observable vents. The overall map area and its dataset show the volcanic geology of the northern part (about 3,340 square kilometers) of Harrat Rahat, at a scale of 1:75,000. Two additional map areas and their feature classes highlight areas of interest at 1:25,000 scale. Northern Harrat Rahat is of interest owing to the location of the city of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah...

A method to estimate the probable high groundwater level in Massachusetts, excluding Cape Cod and the Islands was developed in 1981. The method, commonly called the “Frimpter Method,” uses a groundwater measurement from a test site, groundwater measurements from an index well, and a distribution of high groundwater levels from wells in similar geologic and topographic settings. Historic groundwater-level statistics (maximum and 90th percentile groundwater level and annual groundwater-level range) were calculated for 153 wells in Massachusetts and nearby States to update the method inputs. In addition, as part of a comparison of approaches to determine the best index well for a given site, a multiple linear regression...

This Fish Community Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the fish communities sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), fish were sampled for identification and measurement of length and weight. Identification of fish were done by the same biologists for both the 1998-2000 data and the 1986-87 historical data (Smith et al. 1994). Any fish difficult to identify were preserved in buffered formalin for later identification. If large numbers of a particular species were collected the first thirty fish were measured and weighed; remaining fish were individually measured and group weighed. All...
