This dataset was created as part of the USGS Afghanistan Project investigating artisanal and small-scale mining activity. Clay mining for brick making purposes represents a small but important segment of the mineral extraction industry in Kabul, Afghanistan. Over the past several decades Kabul has grown from a relatively small city, with a 1970 population of less than 500,000 people, to a sprawling urban center with approximately 4.2 million people in 2020 (CIA 2020). Population growth has expanded the need for housing, commercial, and industrial buildings, and associated infrastructure. This has greatly increased demand for bricks, the primary construction material of the region. In this study, very high-resolution...

A mineral resource assessment for tungsten, a critical mineral commodity (see 'Related External Resources' section below) for the United States, was carried out by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for a portion of the Great Basin region, in western Nevada and eastern California, between latitudes 36N and 42N and longitudes 116W and 120W. This study (Lederer and others, in review) integrates data from several sources, including geologic, geochemical, geophysical, remote sensing, watershed analysis, and mining with recently developed grade and tonnage models, expert estimates, and software tools and analyses to generate probabilistic estimates of undiscovered tungsten skarn resources. The assessment was conducted...

In this study, we determined the carbon balance in the Great Dismal Swamp, a large forested peatland in the southeastern USA, which has been drained for over two hundred years and now is being restored through hydrologic management. We modeled future net ecosystem carbon balance over 100 years (2012 to 2112) using in situ field observations paired with simulations of water-table depth. The three scenarios used in the model were baseline conditions, flooded/wet conditions, and drained/dry conditions, which represent a range of potential management actions and climate conditions at the Great Dismal Swamp. This U.S. Geological Survey Data Release provides the modeled output estimating the net ecosystem carbon balance,...

Terrain models representing river channel and terrestrial surface elevations were developed for use in 2D hydraulic modeling with HEC-RAS software. Channel bed elevations were determined from cross-sectional field surveys (Seneca Creek and Patapsco River) or manual corrections of the LIDAR data (Patuxent River and Little Gunpowder Falls) and integrated with the terrestrial LIDAR data.

This data collection includes ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data and related observations collected from the NASA Goddard Instrument Field Team (GIFT) Expedition to the Icelandic Highlands in July-August 2019 and August 2021. This dataset includes observations at the Askja Volcano and caldera and Vikrahraun lava flow. GPR data were collected using Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc (GSSI) shielded bistatic antennas at center frequencies of 200 MHz, 400 MHz, and 900 MHz. Common offset surveys were conducted to investigate the subsurface interfaces. The GPR data includes raw data obtained from the instrument (as GSSI .dzt files), line shapefiles of survey locations, and interpreted ice thickness GeoPackage files with...

The Harrat Rahat volcanic field, located in the west-central part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is the largest of 15 harrats (Arabic for 'volcanic field') hosted within the Arabian plate. Harrat Rahat is 50 to 75 km wide (east-west) and 300 km long (north-south), covering an area of approximately 20,000 square kilometers and encompassing more than 900 observable vents. The overall map area and its dataset show the volcanic geology of the northern part (about 3,340 square kilometers) of Harrat Rahat, at a scale of 1:75,000. Two additional map areas and their feature classes highlight areas of interest at 1:25,000 scale. Northern Harrat Rahat is of interest owing to the location of the city of Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah...

This data release contains gridded estimates of postfire debris flow probability and magnitude for six different rainfall and wildfire scenarios in southern California. The scenarios represent the present and possible future precipitation and fire regimes for the region. The results are provided for 1 km2 cells across the study area. The data release accompanies the journal article Kean, J.W. and Staley, D.M. (2021). Forecasting the frequency and magnitude of postfire debris flow across southern California, Earth's Future, 2020EF001735.

This report evaluates the volcano-related hazards, including regional mafic lava flows, silicic lava domes, pyroclastic flows, lahars, and volcanic ash, of the Lassen region, California, which is here defined as an area between the Pit River on the north and the southern limit of active Cascade volcanism, approximately 5–10 km south of the southern boundary of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Most active volcanism occurs in a zone about 40 km wide between Viola on the west and the eastern boundary of Caribou Wilderness Area, but sparser volcanism in the west extends the width of this zone to about 75 km. All vents and deposits known or estimated to be less than 100,000 years are identified and considered in establishing...

A steady-state groundwater flow model was developed for watersheds on the north shore of Long Island Sound in coastal Connecticut and adjacent areas of New York and Rhode Island. As part of the analysis, groundwater travel times and the components of the groundwater budget were calculated for each HUC12 basin within the model domain and for the watersheds of selected embayments identified by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The seaward boundaries of the HUC12 basins were extended to include adjacent coastal waters. This compilation includes shapefiles of the HUC12 basins and of the watersheds of selected embayments. Shapefiles of the selected embayments without the corresponding...
This data release contains data summarizing observations within and adjacent to the Woodbury Fire, which burned from 8 June to 15 July 2019. In particular, this monitoring data was focused on debris flows in burned and unburned areas. Rainfall data (1_Woodbury_Rainfall.zip) are contained in comma-separated value (CSV) files named “Wdby_Rainfall” appended with the names of 3 rain gages: B2, B6, and Reavis. This is time-series data where the total rainfall in millimeters is recorded at each timestamp. The location of each rain gage is listed as a latitude/longitude in each file. Pressure data from absolute (i.e. not vented) pressure transducers (2_Woodbury_Pressure.zip), which can be used to constrain the...

The Coachella paleoseismic site is located on the San Andreas Fault along the northeast edge of the Coachella Valley in southern California, southwest of the intersection of Dillon Road and Avenue 44. In 2006, three benched trenches were excavated across the fault zone as part of an Alquist-Priolo fault investigation study by a private geotechnical firm (see APSI_003361 at https://maps.conservation.ca.gov/cgs/informationwarehouse/apreports/). These trenches exposed a thick section of latest Holocene lacustrine, alluvial, and shoreline deposits. Only the central and eastern trenches exposed faulting so paleoseismic investigations were confined to those two trenches. In the central trench (T1), we photographed and...
