We used a combination of stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen values in nesting loggerhead sea turtle samples to describe the foraging area used by each turtle. Here we present the stable isotope values for United States Geological Survey (USGS) turtles sampled in the remote Dry Tortugas National Park, south Florida, and their assigned foraging area.

Mitochondrial DNA markers have elucidated patterns of connectivity between green turtle nesting populations (rookeries) and juveniles foraging in neritic nursery habitats. We used stable isotope analysis of nitrogen and carbon turtle epidermal samples to describe the trophic niche of the sampled sea turtle population by portraying δC as a habitat structure variable against δN as a resource gradient axis. We examined isotopic data for hawksbills (n = 64) and green turtles (n = 241) hand-captured across an 8-year time frame (2011-2019) to assess interspecific competition. We use statistical analysis to identify ontogenetic shifts associated with changes in trophic feeding to postulate changes to resource use. This dataset contains surface dive times, defined as 0-2 m in the water column, for three species of sea turtles (Kemp's ridleys, loggerheads, and green turtles) tracked via satellite telemetry in the Gulf of Mexico during periods within 2010-2019. It contains information on turtle species, location, proportion of time in "surface" bins, region of the Gulf of Mexico, corresponding remotely-sensed variables at specific locations/times (i.e., sea surface temperature, sea surface temperature anomalies, salinity, current direction, sea surface height), depth, and distance to shore. This dataset thus allows estimation of time each turtle spent at the surface in various sites in the Gulf of Mexico.

This dataset includes processed satellite tracking data collected from green turtles between July 2002 and October 2020 in the Gulf of Mexico. Tracks were located along the west coast of Florida from the Florida Keys to the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Output from the state-space model (SSM) described in Lamont et al. (2023) is included, as are inter-nesting and foraging centroids calculated using kernel density estimates and minimum convex polygons.

This dataset contains the capture histories for juvenile green (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) sea turtles tagged with an acoustic telemetry tag between 2012 and 2017. It contains information on how many days had passed since the tag was attached and whether or not the tag was still attached upon recapture. This dataset thus allows estimation of acoustic tag retention rates for these two species of sea turtle in our study site at Buck Island Reef National Monument (BIRNM), St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI).

Invasive Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) have been reproducing in the Florida Everglades since the 1980s. Introduction of the species was either due to unintentional escapes or intentional releases from snakes obtained through the commercial pet trade. Burmese pythons have caused a precipitous decline in small mammal populations in south Florida. To better understand the invasive population, two mitochondrial loci (mtDNA; 1398 bps) were sequenced on 426 snakes and 22 microsatellites were genotyped on 389 snakes. This study was initiated to provide baseline data and to determine the utility of stable isotope analysis to evaluate the foraging strategies of an opportunistic reptile predator. Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen were evaluated from multiple tissues from terrapin populations to determine spatial or temporal variations in resource use within mangrove habitats in Southern Florida. Environmental DNA (eDNA) detection of invasive species can be used to delimit occupied ranges and estimate probabilities to inform management decisions. Environmental DNA is shed into the environment through skin cells and bodily fluids and can be detected in water samples collected from lakes, rivers, and swamps. In south Florida, invasive Burmese pythons occupy much of the Greater Everglades in mostly inaccessible habitat and are credited with causing severe declines of native species’ populations. This dataset contains cumulative threat data for several species of male sea turtles tagged with satellite tags between 2009 and 2020. It contains information on species, capture date, days during tracking spent in marine protected areas, shipping lanes, near the coast, near oil rigs, and within known fishing operations. This dataset thus allows estimation of threat levels from these anthropogenic pressures for sea turtles tagged in different study sites in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.
