This dataset is comprised of three files containing northing, easting, and elevation ("XYZ") information for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data representing beach topography and sonar data representing near-shore bathymetry of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, Duluth, Minnesota. The point data is the same as that in LAS (industry-standard binary format for storing large point clouds) files that were used to create a digital elevation model (DEM) of the approximately 5.9 square kilometer (2.3 square mile) surveyed area. LiDAR data were collected August 10, 2019 using a boat-mounted Optech ILRIS scanner and methodology similar to that described by Huizinga and Wagner (2019). Multi-beam sonar data were collected...

This data provides an estimated raster surface of dissolved oxygen values across a region covered by an August 23, 2016 AUV survey. The raster was generated by using a natural neighbors interplator within a GIS on the empirical data set. This interpolator was chosen due to the non-normal distribution observed among the data, and its ability to produce smoother approximations than alternative interpolation methods. There are three files available for download in the 'Attached Files' section below. There is a zip file which contains the interpolated dissolved oxygen surface, an xml file which contains metadata, and a layer file which can be used to import the layer's symbology.

The US Geological Survey Chesapeake Bay Watershed Land Cover Data Series, 2011 edition, (CBLCD-e11) consists of Level I Land Cover data for the years 1984, 1992, 2001, 2006 and 2011. It consists of a series of five 8-bit unsigned integer raster data files of 30 meter spatial resolution in Albers Conic Equal Area projection, NAD83 datum. The 1984 – 2006 data layers were created by aggregating most Level II Anderson classes of the USGS CBLCD Land Cover Data Series released in 2010 (Irani and Claggett, 2010).

Effective monitoring and prediction of flood and drought events requires an improved understanding of how and why surface-water expansion and contraction in response to climate varies across space. This paper sought to (1) quantify how interannual patterns of surface-water expansion and contraction vary spatially across the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) and adjacent Northern Prairie (NP) in the United States, and (2) explore how landscape characteristics influence the relationship between climate inputs and surface-water dynamics. Due to differences in glacial history, the PPR and NP show distinct patterns in regards to drainage development and wetland density, together providing a diversity of conditions to examine...

This dataset includes the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in 2003 along a north-south profile west of Wendover, Nevada. It is important to know whether major mining districts in the Northern Nevada Gold Province are underlain by rocks of the Archean Wyoming craton, which are known to contain orogenic gold deposits, or by accreted rocks of the Paleoproterozoic Mojave province. It is also important to know the location and orientation of the Archean/Proterozoic suture zone between these provinces as well as major basement structures within these terranes because they may influence subsequent patterns of sedimentation, deformation, magmatism, and hydrothermal activity. This study was funded by the U.S....

Groundwater quality data were collected in 5,000 wells between 1988-2001 by the National Water-Quality Assessment Project. About 1,500 of these wells were sampled again between 2002-2012 to evaluate decadal changes in groundwater quality. Monitoring wells, domestic supply wells, and some public supply wells were included in this study. All water was collected prior to treatment. Groundwater samples used to evaluate decadal change were collected from networks of wells with similar characteristics. Some networks, consisting of domestic or public supply wells, were used to assess changes in the quality of groundwater used for drinking water supply. Other networks, consisting of monitoring wells, assessed changes in...

Geospatial data were developed to characterize pre-fire biomass, burn severity, and biomass consumed for the Black Dragon Fire that burned in northern China in 1987. Pre-fire aboveground tree biomass (Mh/ha) raster data were derived by relating plot-level forest inventory data with pre-fire Landsat imagery from 1986 and 1987. Biomass data were generated for individual species: Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii Rupr. Kuzen), white birch (Betula platyphylla Suk), aspen (Populus davidiana Dode and Populus suaveolens Fischer), and Mongolian Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica Litvinov). A raster layer of total aboveground tree biomass was also generated. Burned area was manually delineated using the normalized...

Sandy ocean beaches in the United States are popular tourist and recreational destinations and constitute some of the most valuable real estate in the country. The boundary between land and water along the coastline is often the location of concentrated residential and commercial development and is frequently exposed to a range of natural hazards, which include flooding, storm effects, and coastal erosion. In response, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting a national assessment of coastal change hazards. One component of this research effort, the National Assessment of Shoreline Change Project, documents changes in shoreline position as a proxy for coastal change. Shoreline position is an easily understood...

To improve our understanding of health and immune function in tortoises, we evaluated both standard blood diagnostic (body condition, hematologic, plasma biochemistry values, trace elements, plasma proteins, vitamin A levels) and gene transcription profiles in 21 adult tortoises (11 clinically abnormal; 10 clinically normal) from Clark County, NV, USA. Necropsy and histology evaluations from clinically abnormal tortoises revealed multiple physiological complications, with moderate to severe rhinitis or pneumonia being the primary cause of morbidity in all but one of the examined animals. Improved methods for health assessments are an important element of monitoring tortoise population recovery and can support the...

We analyzed very-high-resolution imagery to assess status of Metrosideros polymorpha forests across an 83,603 hectare study area that experienced extensive canopy dieback in the 1970s on the eastern side of the island of Hawaii. Using GIS we generated 1170 virtual vegetation plots with a 100 m radius; 541 plots in areas mapped in 1977 with trees dead or mostly defoliated (dieback), and 629 plots in adjacent wet forest habitat, previously mapped as non-dieback condition. In each plot we estimated the percent of M. polymorpha trees dead or mostly defoliated, and percent of trees with healthy crowns. These results were combined with habitat data to produce a spatial model depicting probability of canopy dieback within...

This data release contains coastal wetland synthesis products for the geographic region from Jamaica Bay to western Great South Bay, located in southeastern New York State. Metrics for resiliency, including unvegetated to vegetated ratio (UVVR), marsh elevation, and mean tidal range, are calculated for smaller units delineated from a Digital Elevation Model, providing the spatial variability of physical factors that influence wetland health. Through scientific efforts initiated with the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands with the intent of providing Federal, State, and local managers with...

"NewEngland_pkflows.PRT" is a text file that contains results of flood-frequency analysis of annual peak flows from 186 selected streamflow gaging stations (streamgages) operated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in the New England region (Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Hampshire, and Vermont). Only streamgages in the region that were also in the USGS "GAGES II" database (https://water.usgs.gov/GIS/metadata/usgswrd/XML/gagesII_Sept2011.xml) were considered for use in the study. The file was generated by combining PeakFQ output (.PRT) files created using version 7.0 of USGS software PeakFQ (https://water.usgs.gov/software/PeakFQ/; Veilleux and others, 2014) to conduct flood-frequency...

These feature data are part of a larger dataset containing shapefiles and associated metadata for lava flows erupted at Kilauea volcano from ca. 1790 through 1982. The complete dataset includes all known subaerial eruptions in the volcano's Southwest Rift Zone and East Rift Zone, and selected flows erupted within the summit caldera, during this time period. Two attributed shapefiles are associated with each eruption: a polyline shapefile for the lava flow contacts and eruptive fissures, and a polygon shapefile showing the full extent of the lava flow after emplacement. In total, this dataset contains 100 shapefiles, each with an associated metadata .txt file, representing 50 separate eruptions. The lava flow contacts...

Wildfire can impact soil-physical and soil-hydraulic properties, with major implications for hydrologic and ecologic response. The durations of these soil impacts are poorly characterized for some forested environments. This dataset sheds light on the first four years of recovery of soil-physical properties of bulk density, loss on ignition (measure of soil organic matter), ground cover, and soil particle size distribution and of soil-hydraulic properties of sorptivity and field-saturated hydraulic conductivity. The dataset also includes a simple infiltration model used to examine infiltration as the sites recover from fire. Sample locations within the 2013 Black Forest Fire study area are: BF1, UTM-Easting (m)...
