This data release contains estimates of mean daily gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER) in Bronson and Fanno Creeks, Oregon during August of 2016. These estimates were part of a larger study of the water-quality effects of beaver dams and beaver activity in selected urban streams of the Tualatin River Basin in northwestern Oregon. The mean daily GPP and ER values were estimated using two approaches (both of which are publicly available and documented): 1) a USGS model developed using the R programming language and 2) a Washington Department of Ecology model that runs in Excel. Inputs for the models included hourly measurements of dissolved-oxygen concentration, water temperature, photosynthetically...

This data release contains relevant datasets used in the analysis for the Chesapeake Bay stressor identification project, for which results are described in Fanelli and others (2022). For this project, two existing information sources were compiled and summarized to identify key in-stream stressors reported by the scientific literature or through regulatory assessments to be likely affecting benthic macroinvertebrate community metrics in the Chesapeake Bay region: 1) the peer reviewed multi-stressor literature, in which the effects multiple in-stream stressors on benthic macroinvertebrate community metrics are simultaneously assessed; and 2) reported causes of biological impairment as listed by state or district...

Freshwater salinization is an emerging issue for freshwater environments in the Chesapeake Bay, USA region. Salinization is often described by measurements of specific conductance (SC). This data release contains specific conductance observations collected by multiple regional agencies for streams within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. This inventory compiles and harmonizes data from the Water Quality Portal (WQP), which is a data repository developed by the National Water Quality Monitoring Council and supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Geological Survey, and the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System (NWIS). Both discrete measures of SC, which are single measures taken...

This dataset includes information compiled for the literature review meta-analysis portion for the Chesapeake Bay Stressor Identification Project. The dataset includes basic identifying information regarding the publication (last name of the first author, year published, study type, and number of observational units included in the study), the response metric for which results were reported, and the major source or driver that was the focus of the study. The dataset denotes for each stressor category whether a stressor was measured and whether the study’s analysis found it to be an important factor influencing the response metric. The results are reported for both coarse and fine stressor levels, since two stressor...

This dataset contains laboratory standard reference sample concentrations analyzed by RTI Laboratories, the analytical laboratory used by the Gwinnett County, Georgia study. These water-quality-control samples are part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Standard Reference Samples (SRS) Project inter-laboratory comparison study. RTI Laboratories sample concentrations along with the included inter-laboratory result statistics (for most probable value and standard error) can be used to assess the laboratory’s analytical precision and bias. Sample concentrations are reported for 12 constituents for 13 round-robin sample rounds, in which prepared samples are sent to participating laboratories twice per year, and were...

This Data Release represents geospatial and tabular data for a study investigating linkages between local terrain and wetland hydroperiod and was supported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative (ARMI). This dataset contains wetland water level data from Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge (SMNWR). Data include records of water level and water temperature measurements from select wetlands beginning in July 2010 and ending in 2019. Not all wetlands span this entire period as different phases of studies resulted in different time periods of data collection. Instrumentation included a staff gage and a non-vented continuous logging pressure transducer that logged data at 1-hour...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, conducted a study to determine the occurrence of micropollutants in: (1) shallow groundwater near large subsurface treatment systems and rapid infiltration basins and (2) shallow groundwater and soil from an agricultural field that land applies domestic wastewater. Water samples were analyzed with enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods at the U.S. Geological Survey Minnesota Water Science Center for carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole. These data support the following publication: Krall, A.L., Elliott, S.M., Erickson, M.L., and Adams, B.A., 2018, Detecting sulfamethoxazole and carbamazepine in groundwater: Is ELISA...

Coastal communities are uniquely vulnerable to sea-level rise and severe storms such as hurricanes. These events enhance the dispersion and concentration of natural and anthropogenic chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms that could adversely affect the health and resilience of coastal communities and ecosystems in subsequent years. The U.S. Geological Survey has developed the Sediment-Bound Contaminant Resiliency and Response (SCoRR) strategy to define baseline and post-event sediment-bound environmental health stressors. These data document the results from protein phosphatase 2A screening of extracts for selected stations in the northeastern U.S. during the 2015 pilot implementation of the SCoRR strategy in...

This dataset contains quality assurance sample concentrations for 19 constituents for the 15 monitored watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia, from 2000 to 2020. Samples include 431 replicate pairs and 335 field blanks. Replicate sampling allows for comparison of water quality to assess the combined variability in sample representativeness and laboratory precision and can also be used to identify possible sample contamination. Field blanks, samples of deionized “blank” water collected using the same sampling equipment and similar methodology as routine samples, were used to identify any possible contamination from field collection equipment and methodology.

This dataset includes summary information on the reports/studies compiled for the literature review portion of the Chesapeake Bay stressor identification project. This dataset includes basic identifying information regarding the report (name of the report, last name of the first author, year published, persistent link to the report, etc.). It also lists the geographic location of the study (U.S. states or countries for those outside the U.S.), the type of field study, the major source or driver that was the focus of the study, and which in-stream stressors were measured. Finally, the dataset includes a decision code to denote whether the study/report results were included in this project’s analysis or not. If not,...

This data release includes data processing scripts, data products, and associated metadata for a novel remote-sensing based approach to assess resilience of spring-dependent ecosystems to inter-annual changes in water availability. This approach uses remotely-sensed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to (1) delineate surface moisture zones (SMZs) in the vicinity of mapped springs in a semi-arid sage-steppe landscape, (2) derive quantitative indicators of the relative resilience of these SMZs to inter-annual changes in water availability, and (3) synthesize these indicators into an overall resilience score for each cluster of springs. Specifically, for 39 spring clusters mapped in the National Hydrography...

This dataset contains the percentages of impervious areas within the drainage areas of 15 watersheds in Gwinnett County, Georgia from 2000 to 2020. The dataset includes data from 16 years, 2000, 2005, 2006, and annually from 2008 to 2020. The dataset was derived from impervious area coverages provided from the Gwinnett County Department of Public Utilities. These coverages were determined from 1:1,200-scale aerial photography with a 1-meter square grid size created by digitizing polygons of impervious surfaces. Watershed imperviousness was determined for various land cover types that were provided with the impervious area coverages. These included transportation and buildings land cover types for all impervious...

This data release contains summary metrics describing stream stage, stream water temperature, and short-term climate conditions (daily precipitation and air temperature) for 30 streams spanning gradients of forest and pasture land uses and agricultural best management practice implementation in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia and West Virginia, USA. This setting is the first of four settings or "typologies" that will be assessed for the USGS Chesapeake Stream Team project. High-frequency stage and water temperature (5-minute data), and air temperature (30-minute data) were measured by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from May 2021 to December 2021 and are available on the USGS National Water Information...
