This data release contains eight datasets that represent the entirety of the data collected for a study that examined breeding-bird densities in native mixed-grass prairie from 2003 to 2012 at and adjacent to wind facilities in North Dakota and South Dakota, USA. Data were collected to determine breeding-bird density per 100 hectares (ha) by distance bands from turbines and by excluding habitat that may not be considered suitable as breeding habitat for particular bird species. A subset of the data that included only one year prior to turbine construction and several years post-construction and that lent itself to a before-after-control-impact (BACI) assessment was published as its own data release and paper in...

These data were developed to support an effort to understand how whooping cranes select stopover habitat in the presence of human infrastructure. Location and associated data came from whooping cranes (Grus americana) from the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population, 2010–2016. We marked a sample of 57 whooping cranes with leg-mounted transmitters that acquired locations via the global positioning system (GPS) network and transmitted those data through the Argos satellite system. Cranes were captured either at their natal areas in and adjacent to Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada or at their southern terminus along the Texas Gulf Coast, USA. Data herein include 9,347 ground locations used by whooping cranes during migration...

We present a tabular data set representing values to estimate apparent hatch-year survival to adulthood and natal dispersal probabilities between two breeding groups of the Northern Great Plains piping plover (Charadrius melodus) used in a multievent capture-mark-resight model from 2014-2019. Focusing on the Northern Missouri River and U.S. Alkali Wetlands breeding groups. In addition, several covariates were included representing habitat and social variables.

We present a tabular data set representing values used to evaluate hypotheses of breeding habitat selection for immigrants and returning Northern Great Plains piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) from 2014 – 2019. The associated manuscript uses network analysis approach to evaluate five hypotheses of habitat selection. In this approach breeding locations were nodes and successive year breeding attempts form the edges (immigration) and self-loops (fidelity). Included in the dataset are covariates of habitat amount, conspecific density, and habitat quality, as well as other fields used in the analysis. In addition, we include descriptive breeding location-specific metrics from the network graphs.

These data represent nuclear microsatellite data collected from four riparian plant species that occur in and around Grand Canyon National Park: Populus fremontii (POFR), Salix gooddingii (SAGO), Salix exigua (SAEX), and Prosopis glandulosa (PRGL). These data were collected for population genetic analysis to help inform native plant material development in Grand Canyon National Park. Leaf samples were collected at sites spanning 470 km of the Colorado River between Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Mead and in tributaries. Known revegetation areas were not sampled. We aimed to collect leaf tissue from at least 15 individuals at each sample site. If there were fewer than 15 individuals per species at a site, leaf tissue was...

A biologist and field crew from Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center visited sites nine times throughout the breeding season (late May to mid-July) to record counts of grassland birds. Surveyors applied North American Breeding Bird Survey methodology to obtain counts at On-, Near-, and Off-road Stops, but unlike the North American Breeding Bird Survey, which features a single survey at each site, three replicate surveys were conducted on back-to-back-to-back days during each survey period to facilitate estimation of detection and occupancy probabilities. Assignment of surveyors to individual sites followed a design protocol that allows observer effects to also be estimated. The biologist visited each site once...

This service definition contains landscape factors representing human disturbances summarized to local and network catchments of river reaches for the state of Illinois. This dataset is the result of clipping the feature class 'NFHAP 2010 HCI Scores and Human Disturbance Data for the Conterminous United States linked to NHDPLUSV1.gdb' to the state boundary of Illinois. Landscape factors include land uses, population density, roads, dams, mines, and point-source pollution sites. The source datasets that were compiled and attributed to catchments were identified as being: (1) meaningful for assessing fish habitat; (2) consistent across the entire study area in the way that they were assembled; (3) representative of...

Methylmercury concentrations and stable isotope ratios were measured from back feathers of California black rails (Laterallus jamaicensis coturniculus) and six taxa of their invertebrate prey (Amphipoda, Arachnida, Coleoptera, Diptera, Gastropoda, and Hemiptera). Samples were collected from three wetlands in the spring and summer of 2005 and 2006.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources contributed data to MARIS from the Georgia Wade-able Streams Fish Index of Biotic Integrity Sampling program and from Georgia Standardized Sampling program. For Georgia Wade-able Streams Fish Index of Biotic Integrety Sampling, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is engaged in a statewide effort to establish a fish index of biotic integrity (IBI) based on the state's five major ecoregions. The IBI consists of 13 metrics, and scoring criteria for the metrics are based on major river basin and watershed area as well as ecoregion. IBI scores are also reported to Georgia's regulatory agency for use in the Clean Water Act 305b/303d listing process. Data provided to MARIS...

Metadata specific to this state's data is not available. The MARIS Master metadata record can be accessed to help provide general data descriptions and guidance to users. MARIS is an internet-based information sharing network that allows multiple states to provide a common set of variables via a single web interface. MARIS is not a “dataset” but rather links specific content of multiple states’ datasets. MARIS does not capture all of the information from a state’s aquatic dataset – only a subset of data collected as part of aquatic species sampling surveys. The MARIS structure was developed by a consortium of state fish and wildlife agencies and implemented through contracts with various universities. In the past,...

Submarine canyons are morphologically complex systems, acting as major conduits of organic matter along continental shelves, promoting gradients in food resources, habitat heterogeneity, and areas of sediment resuspension and deposition. Often environmental conditions within canyons can be highly distinct, particularly in different parts of the canyon and in contrast to adjacent slopes. Here we examine how biogeochemical drivers shape the differences between canyon and slope infaunal communities in Baltimore and Norfolk Canyons in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic Region. Specific comparisons included macrofaunal communities in Norfolk canyons and adjacent slope, hard substrate associated macrofaunal communities in Norfolk...

Gap Analysis Project (GAP) habitat maps are predictions of the spatial distribution of suitable environmental and land cover conditions within the United States for individual species. Mapped areas represent places where the environment is suitable for the species to occur (i.e. suitable to support one or more life history requirements for breeding, resting, or foraging), while areas not included in the map are those predicted to be unsuitable for the species. While the actual distributions of many species are likely to be habitat limited, suitable habitat will not always be occupied because of population dynamics and species interactions. Furthermore, these maps correspond to midscale characterizations of landscapes,...
