This is a multifaceted collection of physical materials -- rock hand samples and rock thin sections-- and related paper documentation -- field notebooks, maps, and ledgerbooks -- created and collected by some of the premier geologists of the USGS from 1882 through the early 1920s. A database relating all of these materials can be viewed at https://wgnhs.wisc.edu/lake-superior-legacy-collection-website/.

In the 1930’s the Reconstruction Finance Corporation was created by the Federal Government to finance the development and operation of gold, silver and tin mines. The funds were to come from the “Silver Purchase Act” which purchased silver from the miners for 71 cents per ounce and produced coins valued at $1.29. In previous years the loans were only available to gold, silver and tin mines but the law was amended in 1941 making the funds available to operators of all metal mines. The RFC contacted the Department asking it to provide an analysis and review of applications from Arizona for preliminary development loans. The Board meeting of 7/11/42 authorized the Department to enter into an agreement with the Reconstruction...

The Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources operated from 1940 to 2011 to promote the development of Arizona's mineral resources through technical and educational processes. This collection mainly consists of large maps that were flat or rolled upon arrival at ADMMR. Maps that were interfiled in reports remain with their respective collections. Many of these maps were the original drawings from field investigations of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Reduced or slightly modified versions are often found reproduced in U.S. Bureau of Mines reports describing Arizona’s mineral resources organized by commodity or mineral district. The maps reflect the changing nature of mining and exploration in Arizona during the...

The rock cuttings collection of the Ohio Division of Geological Survey consists of 3,100 rock cutting suites, a duplicate set of rock cuttings for 1,175 of 3,100 rock cutting suites, and strip logs for 400 of the 3,100 rock cutting suites.
This Collection of Strip Logs consists of various graphic representations of lithologies or rock units observed in measured sections or core holes. Lithologies are drawn on long narrow paper strip logs at various scales. Most strip log scales are 1 inch = 20 feet, but can range to 1 inch = 100 feet. Most of the information on the strip logs was obtained from the Tennessee Geological Survey drill hole log and measured section collections.

This collection of maps includes a variety of maps that convey attributes of the petroleum industry and its relationship to subsurface geology in Indiana. These include: well location, sample, producing horizon, structure, isopach, and porosity distribution maps. The maps are stored in 15 flat files and 10 file cabinets. The maps range in size from 8”x11” to 36”x42”
These data include springs/seeps, sink/rises, sinkhole center points, and sinkhole areas (all separate shapefiles) digitized from 1:24,000-scale topographic maps. The area for this project includes the southern bend of the Tennessee River basin (parts of northern Alabama, southern Middle Tennessee, and northeastern Mississippi). The data are part of ongoing karst research by the Geological Survey of Alabama.

The Utah Geological Survey (UGS) Geologic Map Database (MAPBIB) contains an inventory of approximately 2850 geologic maps covering various parts of Utah, that date from about 1890 to present, and that vary from formally published USGS and UGS Map and Bulletin Series maps, to informal consulting reports and internal unpublished ?sketch? maps. About half of these maps were published in production runs in which hundreds of copies were printed ? most of these maps are still widely distributed and readily available. However, over 1000 of the maps in our MAPBIB database were produced in only very limited numbers, are completely out of print, are in obscure or remote libraries, or are limited-distribution ?gray? literature...
