Seismic Refraction Surveys are digital and non-digital seismic refraction data, data analyses, and reports.
General Paleontological samples, most are not cataloged. Consists of approximately 150,000 samples in total, most arranged by time period: Cambrian (1500), Ordovician (15,000), Silurian (17,000), Devonian (10,000), Mississippian (15,000), Pennsylvanian (77,000), and Tertiary/Cretaceous (100). Approximately 10,500 specimens are arranged by taxonomic group including brachiopods (7500), cephalopods (1000), and trilobites (2000).
A collection of digital in-hole, vertical seismic data (in standard SEG-Y format) and paper records of field observations.
Wireline logs for subsurface oil field wells.
Plant fossils, coal, coal ball, compression, spore, and pollen.
Groundwater Potential reports (GWP) describe the general hydrogeology and potential for development of a groundwater supply in a particular area.
Thin sections and polished sections of geological samples.
Paper copies of chemical analyses made at Illinois State Geological Survey from approximately 1932 to 1995. Includes chemical analyses for approximately 30,000 coal samples, 20,000 rock samples, 5000 gas samples, 5000 brine samples, and 5000 water samples.
Original hand-written field notes, many of which were also typed and organized by location. The original field notes are cataloged and searchable in an online catalog https://www.isgs.illinois.edu/publications/maps.
High-significance paleontological samples, most are cataloged. Includes collections of trilobites, Ordovician echinoderms, plant fossils, crinoids, conodonts, brachiopods, fusulinids, mollusca, corals, Paleocene fossils, blastoids, and several miscellaneous collections. Includes the Worthen Type and Figured Collection (mid 1800s, see ISGS Circular 524), approximately 4000 mostly Pennsylvanian and Mississippian samples primarily collected by M. Weller in the 1930's, and approximately 100 generally small collections of type, figured, or numbered specimens were cataloged starting in the 1950's.
Coal production history includes historical company names, mine names, mine location, seam mined, and years of operation, for documented coal mines in Illinois, as well as coverages of mine outlines and shaft, slope, drift, and tipple locations. Most of this information is available online as maps and reports at http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/maps-data-pub/coal-maps.shtml.
Clay mineralogy analytical data.
Database containing Engineering Geology Rock Mechanics results.
Radiocarbon dates analyzed at ISGS since the 1970s. Data includes sample number, location, and age.
Collection of Lake Michigan and Chain-of-Lakes Lakebed Core Sample Logs and Associated Data from Illinois
This collection includes data and color slides for core samples taken in the lakebeds of Lake Michigan and the Chain-Of-Lakes. Some have corresponding physical samples.
Analytical data of coal quality from Illinois coal samples.
Collection of rock cuttings mostly from oil and water wells in Illinois, generally taken at 5 or 10-foot intervals. Data available in ILOIL https://www.isgs.illinois.edu/illinois-oil-and-gas-resources-interactive-map and ILWATER https://www.isgs.illinois.edu/ilwater
Chromatographic analyses of methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen and heavier hydrocarbon content from gas and water wells. Data includes flow rate, pressures, BTU/cubic foot, specific gravity and, rarely, isotopic information.
Construction and completion information from oil and gas wells drilled in the early 1900's.
Collection includes photographs and slides. The photographs are cataloged and searchable in an online database. https://www.isgs.illinois.edu/publications/photographs
