Collection consists of paper and electronic files of data from individual wells and springs that have been tested for water quality as part of an ongoing statewide assessment of ground-water quality. Data from the collection is documented in publications and annual administrative reports. Results of groundwater samples collected by the Maryland Geological Survey that were analyzed by the USGS National Water Quality lab have been entered into the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS). Some laboratory results of groundwater sample analyses from state or private labs exist only in paper and spreadsheet format at the Maryland Geological Survey and have not been fully inventoried or catalogeed.

The collection consists of Excel files describing each aquifer (pump) test, containing raw data, plots, and calculations of hydraulic properties (currently Coastal Plain only) and a list of references associated with the collection. Approximately 262 well locations currently have digital aquifer test data; approximately 345 well locations have hydraulic properties described in a published report. This collection will continue to expand as data from additional wells is acquired. The long-term goal is to incorporate pump test data from non-Coastal Plain provinces/Piedmont of Maryland as well.

To date, the collection consists of about 4,200 unprocessed, surficial sediment (grab) samples collected by Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) from the bottom of the Maryland Chesapeake Bay and its major subestuaries between 1976-1984, as part of the Chesapeake Bay Earth Science Study (CBESS), a multidisciplinary research effort authorized by Maryland and Virginia through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). MGS collected samples according to two sampling schemes, mid-bay and nearshore, and then processed them to develop a baseline inventory of certain physical and geochemical characteristics of bay bottom sediments, in particular, water content, grain size composition, and carbon and sulfur content. Since...

Unpublished reports, usually associated with a specific project involving Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) staff. Generally, these are file reports or open-file reports that meet the terms of a grant or contract but are not otherwise distributed or included in the MGS List of Publications. They are commonly, but not necessarily, associated with a particular collection(s). Reports, both paper and digital, need to be collected in a central location, organized, catalogued, and archived. Eventually, they should all be digitized/scanned and be made available electronically.

X-rays and xeroradiographs of marine and estuarine sediment cores collected in Maryland, taken prior to core extrusion. Cores, generally obtained using gravity or box coring equipment, are usually 1-2 m long. This collection has not yet been fully inventoried or cataloged. Need to coordinate cores and all data derived from cores; need to determine best way to store x-rays to preserve them.

Rolls of seismic profiles obtained from the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay as part of projects funded by the U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), respectively. Rolls are either original thermal printer paper or photographic copies. In addition to the specified uses of the collection, another possible use is sand/gravel evaluation. This collection has not yet been fully inventoried or cataloged.

The collection Maryland Macrofossils consists of about 1500 specimens, representing over 200 species of fossils found in Maryland or in geological formations that extend beyond the State’s boundaries. Invertebrates – mollusks, brachiopods, trilobites, crinoids – comprise most of the collection, along with a few marine fish, reptile, and mammal artifacts (e.g., shark teeth, crocodile jaws, whale vertebrae) and plant fossils. Most of the fossil specimens were excavated or collected by former Survey employees. A small collection of plant fossils was discovered by a private citizen and donated to MGS. This collection has not been fully inventoried, cataloged or preserved. Limited metadata for 156 specimens is provided...

The collection consists of 38 glass exhibition flasks, each containing a particular mineral or mineral product (e.g., bituminous coal, brick clay and shale, fire clay and shale, greensand, marl). These were part of a display of Maryland's mineral resources and products, shown at a number of expositions in the U.S. during the first decade of the 20th century. The exhibition flasks are either on display (in the lobby and/or the library) or in storage at the Maryland Geological Survey. See citation below for link to MGS volume containing details and photographs of these displays.

Collection includes approximately 500,000 paper copies of well permits and well completion reports for the State of Maryland, beginning with the origin of the permit system in 1945 to current year, are filed by county and permit number. Some include location maps, pump test data, sand analyses, geophysical logs, chemical analyses and other analyses performed on the hole or well. Many permits/completion reports contain annotations by MGS staff. 100 boxes of microfilm duplicate some paper copies and may complete gaps in paper copy coverage. Data are available on microfiche for the period 1945-1980; microfiche do not include all data included on paper copies. This collection is a primary research source for Maryland...
