This collection is comprised of records of coal exploration drill holes provided to KGS by both private companies and public agencies. It includes paper documents of the core or cutting descriptions, scanned images of the documents, and an online database of the subsurface data. Approximately 60% of the records are publically accessible.

This Collection of Coal Field Measured Sections consists of handwritten descriptions of rock unit sequences measured along roads, railroads, trails, and strip mine highwalls in the Tennessee coal fields. Most of the collection is composed of sections measured by Dr. Harold Wanless during his study of the southern Appalachian coal fields in the late 1930's. Most of the sections are unpublished, except for being included as columnar section illustrations in - Wanless, H.R., 1946, Pennsylvanian geology of a part of the southern Appalachian coal field: Geological Society of America Memoir, 13, 162 p. Other measured sections in this collection originate from published and unpublished sources.

The Well Cuttings Collection consists of well cuttings from 7,376 oil and gas wells in Virginia. This collection is available for study by scientists, citizens, government agencies, and by industry. DGMR is developing an online web-based application for searching and viewing the information about these well cuttings.

To date, the collection consists of about 4,200 unprocessed, surficial sediment (grab) samples collected by Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) from the bottom of the Maryland Chesapeake Bay and its major subestuaries between 1976-1984, as part of the Chesapeake Bay Earth Science Study (CBESS), a multidisciplinary research effort authorized by Maryland and Virginia through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). MGS collected samples according to two sampling schemes, mid-bay and nearshore, and then processed them to develop a baseline inventory of certain physical and geochemical characteristics of bay bottom sediments, in particular, water content, grain size composition, and carbon and sulfur content. Since...

Unpublished reports, usually associated with a specific project involving Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) staff. Generally, these are file reports or open-file reports that meet the terms of a grant or contract but are not otherwise distributed or included in the MGS List of Publications. They are commonly, but not necessarily, associated with a particular collection(s). Reports, both paper and digital, need to be collected in a central location, organized, catalogued, and archived. Eventually, they should all be digitized/scanned and be made available electronically.

X-rays and xeroradiographs of marine and estuarine sediment cores collected in Maryland, taken prior to core extrusion. Cores, generally obtained using gravity or box coring equipment, are usually 1-2 m long. This collection has not yet been fully inventoried or cataloged. Need to coordinate cores and all data derived from cores; need to determine best way to store x-rays to preserve them.

This dataset is a collection of unpublished geologic field maps and transfer maps that represent over 100 years of field data collected by Virginia geological survey staff. These field records include hand-drawn notes, strike and dip, contacts, economic, structure and paleo information. Some maps have been scanned and are available digitally. Most maps are located in our Charlottesville, Va offices in paper format. All are unique, one-of-a-kind documents.

Thin sections prepared primarily in the course of research conducted by geologists of the Wisconsin Geological Survey. There appears to be a set of USGS-related thin sections, as well, but these are not evaluated at this time. Thin sections are tied to field notebooks, which are being reviewed as time allows. Certain physical collections have been located, but their geographic location is uncertain until the field notebooks can be tied to the actual thin section. We must tie physical materials to field notebooks in order to develop geographic coordinates for specific thin sections. Work to date has identified locations of physical items and is currently focused on assessing the notebooks themselves. There are 1,700...

Cores represent over 2,000 individual core sites drilled across the State of Wisconsin; stored in over 56,000 (mainly cardboard) boxes; representing approximately 650,000 linear feet of the subsurface. The Flambeau Core subcollection is approximately 3 percent of the collection of rock cores from Wisconsin. Documentation for the Wisconsin core collection is routinely updated, as information becomes available.

This collection includes field notes, interpretive geologic field maps, field station location maps, and other project materials, many of which are unpublished and archived by the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys. These materials have not been reviewed for accuracy, consistency, or completeness. The collection may contain data and documents pertaining to all related fields of geology, including oil and gas, geologic engineering, minerals industry, scientific data, and agency archives.

This collection currently contains approximately 24,000 oil- and gas- related surface samples, which is a subset of the 507,000 surface samples housed at the Alaska Geologic Materials Center. The Amoco Heritage Collection was donated by Amoco-BP in 2002 and contains samples from fieldwork conducted from 1960-1990 in high energy-resource-potential areas of Alaska.

Most projects conducted by the MWRA have attached to them a geotechnical report and accompanying environmental information. There are also eighteen marine drilling reports on work in the Boston Harbor, as well as, two hardbound copies on the Geology of the Waschusett Reservoir Area. All reports are stored in the library at the main facility in Chelsea; however, not all project managers turn over reports to the librarian for storage. Most projects conducted by the MWRA, related to the construction of water and sewer lines, have attached with them, a geotechnical report and accompanying environmental information. Other paper reports include: eighteen marine drilling reports from work in Boston Harbor; as well as two...

Poorly-labeled boxes of rock, sediment, and fossil specimens collected by individual workers at different times. Also, numerous samples of Cenozoic volcanic ashes that may be of unrealized future value as a reference collection. Hand specimens exist in our collections, but they are completely uncataloged and are improperly stored. This collection may be discarded as additional space restrictions are imposed.

The Historic Images Collection includes approximately 15,500 photographs, slides, lantern slides and digital media in this collection were taken during the course of geologic, mineral resource, and geologic hazard investigations carried out by Virginia Energy staff beginning in the first half of the 20th century. The collection includes images of important rock outcrops that demonstrate key features of stratigraphic units, fossils indicative of the age of rock formations, outcrop-scale geologic structures such as faults and folds, economically significant minerals and mine sites, and geologic hazards such as landslides and sinkholes. Images are available online in JPG format. High resolution imagery is available...
