The Tongass National Forest has identified resources that are important to stakeholders and vulnerable to climate-related stressors. Cooperators will review an action plan and convene a workshop to be held in Southeast Alaska in 2016. The workshop will foster collaboration between scientists, managers, and stakeholders. Workshop goals include: sharing information about climate-related stressors and effects on NPLCC Priority Resources in the Tongass National Forest; developing strategic priorities for improving understanding, reducing risks, and increasing adaptive capacity and resilience; coordinating support for increasing knowledge and informing resource managers
This final report summarizes: • Monthly Productivity and Carrying Capacity surveys and community engagement. • 'Opihi habitat model reflective of 1) seasonal shifts in intertidal resources from monthly surveys, and 2) shifts in intertidal habitat under 0.5 - 2.0 m sea level rise. • Maps of current and future 'Opihi habitat.

This project acquired, federated and curated approximately one million new observations to the Avian Knowledge Network. These new observations, in addition to millions of existing records, were used to model the distribution and abundance of 26 species of land birds in the southern portion of the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative (NPLCC) region including CA, OR and WA. The models were based on climate and modeled vegetation.Using the models, maps were created showing the distribution and abundance of each species for current (late 20th century) conditions and projected the models to future conditions (2070) based on five regional climate models. We have developed autonomous and high precision sensor arrays to monitor growth of individual native plants along with local environmental conditions, coupled with wireless data loggers that can provide real-time data available to managers and the wider public. We deployed an experimental set of these sensors, integrated with a weather station, 2 webcams, and a live web portal (construction in progress) to showcase how this real time information can be useful to relevant managers while also raising awareness of the challenges of climate change adaptation and Hawaiian plant conservation in general. The Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the windward slopes of Mauna Kea is an important habitat for native forest birds and plants, including several threatened and endangered species. The region has been subjected to a variety of pressures over time, including clearing of large swaths of native forest for agriculture and livestock grazing, the intentional and accidental introduction of invasive plants and animals that have degraded habitats and outcompeted native species (e.g., pigs, rats, mosquitos, Japanese white-eye), and climate change-driven changes in temperatures, rainfall patterns, and wildfire regimes. Grassland birds have declined more rapidly than any other group of land birds in North America in the last 50 years with populations of Spragues Pipit, Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspur, and Bairds Sparrow having declined 65-94% during this period. This cross-programmatic collaborative project will expand on a growing network of Motus automated receivers (stations) to provide the first fine-scale quantitative assessment of the migratory period for regional priority grassland songbirds which will inform key knowledge gaps about migration routes and stopover locations. In the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) wetland plant, invertebrate, and waterbird productivity are primarily driven by water-level dynamics in response to climate cycles. Large proportions of wetlands in the PPR have been drained, often consolidating water from smaller to larger-interconnected wetlands. This project will examine whether large basins that receive inflow from consolidation drainage have reduced water-level dynamics in response to climate cycles than those in undrained landscapes, resulting in relatively stable wetlands that have lower densities of invertebrate forage for ducks and shorebirds. The objective of this study is to produce a map of invasive fern populations across approximately 35,000 acres of forests in windward Moloka‘i and in windward Mauna Kahalawai, Maui. This will enable the Division of Forestry and Wildlife and partners to control incipient populations of these weeds efficiently and effectively. The Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) has successfully completed and in some areas exceeded the grant deliverables. The data has shown that invasive Mulesfoot (AngEve) and Australian Tree Fern (SphCoo) are at manageable levels in the northeastern forests of Molokai and West Maui. Estimates of nutrient loading to the Gulf of Mexico indicate that nine states within the Mississippi River Basin are responsible for approximately 75% of all nitrogen and phosphorus delivered to the Gulf. The Mississippi Basin also supports a rich assemblage of fish species; at least 25% of all species in the conterminous United States are found in the Basin. These assemblages reflect their habitats, human landscape disturbances, and fragmentation of the river network by dams. Climate also has close associations with aquatic habitat conditions and ultimately fish community composition. This report describes the final design for the Conservation Planning Atlas. The Conservation Biology Institute worked with Pacific Islands Climate Change Cooperative (PICCC) staff to design, customize, and host spatial datasets in an online PICCC Conservation Planning Atlas (CPA). The Atlas design and development process was informed by five focus groups that were convened by PICCC to gather stakeholder needs and identify priority spatial datasets for association with the CPA.
This project investigates the potential of reversing and potentially preventing coral bleaching with cooled reef water. The Climate Foundation succeeded in reversing coral bleaching in American Samoa by managing the reef temperature of the seawater in the vicinity of the affected corals. Bleaching occurs seasonally on many reefs in American Samoa, providing a good field setting for studying approaches to reversing coral bleaching. Surprisingly, the staghorn corals under study reversed bleaching in less than 24 hours in some cases when temperatures are reduced by less than one degree Fahrenheit. This project has provided baseline information on mosquito distribution and avian malaria prevalence in birds within a key portion of kiwikiu and ʻākohekohe range. This will help evaluate the immediate extinction risk for these two species in this area; the results are promising that this portion of Waikamoi has not been inundated with mosquitoes yet and may for some time provide habitat for the endangered honeycreepers. MFBRP will be replicating this study in the Hanawi Natural Area Reserve in 2022. This project will look at how climate change has altered hydrologic systems, Pacific salmon habitat, and survival of salmon in the Nooksack River watershed. It will develop an adaptation plan that can be adopted and integrated into management plans. Project Objectives for NPLCC funding: 1.
