Predators are a known detriment to beach nesting birds at Cape May National Wildlife Refuge. Although the refuge regularly contracts with USDA to provide 2 weeks of predator trapping, predators historically move onto the refuge throughout a breeding season and detrimentally affect the beach nesting birds when contract work has already been spent or USDA is unavailable to get out to specific sites. In recent years, this has resulted in low productivity. Funding is requested to implement more adaptive predation management efforts through either increased trapping duration, and/or to purchase trapping and control supplies for refuge staff, and to purchase supplies to trap and control ghost crabs.

The North Atlantic Region of the United States and Canada boasts diverse habitats, from coasts to mountains, that support endemic and rare plant species. However, recent conservation actions and prioritization efforts in this region have neglected to include plants. We have conducted a conservation assessment for vascular plants that occur in the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative. This project developed a series of maps depicting the distribution and probability of occurrence of marine birds in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean. The maps are intended to be used for informing decisions about siting offshore facilities; marine spatial planning; and other uses requiring maps of seabird distributions.

Contributing to a core component of the Nature’s Network, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy conducted an analysis on species-habitat associations data to develop a measure of overall species importance, summarized across all species, for each habitat class in the Northeast. Vernal or seasonal pools are small, temporary bodies of water that can serve as critical habitat for frogs, salamanders, reptiles, invertebrates, and other species. The first step in developing effective conservation strategies for vernal pools and associated wildlife species is to know where on the landscape these small wetlands exist. Funding will be provided to Save the Bay, an organization based in Rhode Island that is developing cutting-edge runnelling techniques that are improving thousands of acres of marshes across the region. Save the Bay’s Restoration Director works with partners throughout the Northeast region, and regularly hosts partners in the field and via webinars to share tips and lessons learned on implementing these techniques. An urgent need exists to uniformly assess river corridors, including floodplains, and to prioritize areas for protection across the North Atlantic landscape. These are daunting tasks since there are no well-defined methods to delineate and assess scores of diverse river corridors in this region. Coastal marshes serve a variety of important functions including flood control, spawning/rearing areas for marine life, and critical habitat for many bird species of conservation concern. The focus of this project was to facilitate local actions in Maine to accommodate the needs of coastal marshes to migrate landward in response to rising sea levels.
The purpose of this demonstration project was to show how North Atlantic LCC science products can be used to inform conservation for a Northeast habitat and resilience “hotspot.” The Trust for Public Land integrated LCC and other science products into a clearinghouse and analysis tool for parcel-level conservation planning in the 2.7 million acre White Mountains to Moosehead Lake region of Maine and New Hampshire.

This project inventoried modifications to both tidal inlet and sandy, oceanfront beach habitats along the Atlantic coast from Maine through North Carolina. Three distinct time periods were assessed: before Hurricane Sandy (early 2012), immediately after Hurricane Sandy (November 2012), and three years after Hurricane Sandy (2015) to document modifications to sandy beaches and tidal inlet habitat in response to the stormy. This project is being closely coordinated with a companion project funded by the North Atlantic LCC.In 2011, intense and sustained rain from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee washed out roads throughout mountains of New York and New England as culverts running under those roads were not designed to handle such enormous volumes of water. Additional flooding from Hurricane Sandy, which lashed the Northeast coast and adjacent inland areas in October 2012, caused additional damage. The Bluestone sculpin (Cottus sp.) is a priority at-risk freshwater fish endemic to the Bluestone River system in Virginia and West Virginia. The species occurs in small, cool streams with gravel and rubble dominated substrates. The taxonomic status of the Bluestone sculpin is unresolved, and its range often overlaps with congeners, with which it may hybridize. To address the conservation status of the Bluestone sculpin, taxonomic analyses are needed to fully describe the species and evaluate the level of hybridization. Additionally, comprehensive surveys and genetic analyses are needed to determine the species range and population connectivity. Locating the species using eDNA may be a viable option.
The Delaware River Basin Restoration Program implements conservation, stewardship, and enhancement projects in four areas: conserving and restoring fish and wildlife habitat; improving and sustaining water quality; upgrading water management, and reducing flood damage; enhancing recreational opportunities and public access.Since 2018, the Program has awarded $40.4 million to 159 projects, which generated $59.7 million in match, for a total conservation impact of $100.1 million.
