Water used for hydraulic fracturing treatments in and near the Williston Basin during 2000-2015, was estimated using data reported in IHS Markit (TM) (2016). Hydraulic fracturing treatment data from IHS Markit (TM) (2016) may include volumes in a variety of measurement units, and they may include multiple treatments per well. All listed treatments within the study area were converted to gallons and summed on a per-well basis, discounting any treatments for which the specified measurement units were unclear (for example, “sacks”, or “feet”), which were minor. Of 3,734,380 treatments listed within the study area during the timeframe of interest, 0.7% (26,373 records) were not included. For each well, the date listed...

The trace element selenium is an essential element with a narrow window between concentrations needed to support life and those that cause toxicity to egg laying organisms. Selenium bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms is primarily the result of trophic transfer through food webs and is poorly predicted by dissolved concentrations in freshwater bodies. To better understand the hydrologic and biological dynamics that control selenium accumulation into fishes of the Lower Gunnison River Basin (Colorado), ecosystem scale selenium accumulation models were developed from data collected between June 2015 and October 2016.

Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (MT FWP), in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center (WY-MT WSC), Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) collected fish from the Koocanusa Reservoir in 2021 for tissue analysis. Fish tissue collected included muscle, eggs, liver, and whole body. Analysis of tissues included characterization of the concentration of selenium, mercury and methyl mercury, nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes, and vitamins A and E. The purpose of these analyses was to inform state and federal management agencies on transboundary coal mining impacts to downstream fish health.
