This dataset describes responses to flushes by surveyors and predators for mallard and gadwall hens nesting on the Grizzly Island Wildlife Area, Suisun Marsh, California in 2015 through 2018. It includes the start time and duration of recesses, as well as the cause of recess initiation and responses of hens to various trapping activities at the nest site. These data support the following publication: Croston, R., Hartman, C.A., Herzog, M.P., Peterson, S.H., Kohl, J.D., Overton, C.T., Feldheim, C.L., Casazza, M.L. and Ackerman, J.T., 2021. Interrupted incubation: How dabbling ducks respond when flushed from the nest. Ecology and Evolution.

This dataset describes nocturnal incubation recess behavior for mallard and gadwall hens nesting in Grizzly Island Wildlife Area in breeding seasons 2015-2018. It includes the frequency, start time and duration of recesses, and details a method for determining whether a recess was initiated in response to a predator at the nest using nest temperature data. These data support the following publication: Croston, R.L., Peterson, S.E., Hartman, C.A., Herzog, M.P., Feldheim, C.L., Casazza, M.L., Ackerman, J.T., 2021. Nocturnal incubation recess and flushing behavior by duck hens. Ecology and Evolution

These metadata provide data used to examine mercury and selenium concentrations in eggs of birds breeding in wetlands of the Great Salt Lake ecosystem, Utah, particularly at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Eggs were salvaged during 2010 - 2012 and include 33 species of birds. These data support the following publication: Ackerman, J.T., Herzog, M.P., Hartman, C.A., Isanhart, J., Herring, G., Vaughn, S., Cavitt, J.F., Eagles-Smith, C.A., Browers, H., Cline, C., and Vest, J., 2015, Mercury and selenium contamination in waterbird eggs and risk to avian reproduction at Great Salt Lake, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2015-1020, 164 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20151020.

Prey fish were collected at 17 Forster’s tern breeding colonies during colony visits from 2005-2015. Prey fish were identified to the lowest taxonomic category. We present relative abundances by colony and year for each of the 10 major species groups. Unidentified fish species or rarely observed species were combined into an “Other” category. We calculated an arithmetic mean, standard deviation (sd), 25th quantile, and 75th quantile for dry standard length (SL; mm) and dry mass (g) for each fish species at each colony. These data support the following publication: Peterson SH, Ackerman JT, Eagles-Smith CA, Herzog MP, Hartman CA (2018) Prey fish returned to Forster’s tern colonies suggest spatial and temporal differences...

This dataset includes field measurements and laboratory analyses of surface water, bottom water (sediment-water interface), surficial (0-2 cm) sediment, pore water (0-2 cm), and biota collected in Lake Combie, California, from September 2017 through August 2021. The study area includes six sites within the reservoir where discrete samples of surface water, bottom water, sediment, and pore water were taken along the length of the reservoir at the following distances from the spillway: 0.07 miles, 0.5 miles, 0.9 miles, 1.2 miles, 1.3 miles, and 1.4 miles. The within-reservoir sites were sampled during September 2017, February 2018, and May 2018, prior to a large sediment removal operation, and again during September...
