GAP distribution models represent the areas where species are predicted to occur based on habitat associations. GAP distribution models are the spatial arrangement of environments suitable for occupation by a species. In other words, a species distribution is created using a deductive model to predict areas suitable for occupation within a species range. This map shows current, near-term, and long-term estimates of fire occurrence potential due to human and natural causes. These estimates were developed using a Maxent model of 30 years of human and natural fire occurrences predicted against a variety of surfaces including elevation, lightning density, distance to roads and urban areas, vegetation type, and climate. The only factors that were varied to create the near and long-term estimates were climate.
