Forecasting the impacts of Climate Change in the Columbia River Basin: Threats to Fish Habitat Connectivity

For the past six years, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) has funded the USGS to study fish responses to restoration efforts and to construct a model relating stream habitat with fish population dynamics in the Methow River Basin, a tributary of the Columbia River. We propose a collaborative project with the USGS, Wyoming State Climate Office, USFWS, USFS, and the NPS whereby we will assemble and maintain long-term records of climate from key stations in and around the Great Northern LCC and subject these records to a rigorous series of QA/QC procedures. National Wetlands Inventory for Idaho

(NWI) protocols to provide complete NWI coverage for the state of Idaho. Where hard copy maps are unavailable, habitat will be interpreted and digital data will be completed by contractors/cooperators.Main goal is to develop digital data compliant with NWI protocol for wetlands and riparian habitats in Montana and Idaho. Existing hard copy maps will be digitized according to standard NWI protocols to provide complete NWI coverage for the state of Idaho. A Science-based Decision Support Tool for Prioritizing Mitigation of Road Impacts on Western Governors Association Wildlife Corridors

This project aims to provide large landscape practitioners of the U.S. Northern Rockies with a decision support tool for prioritizing conservation action to mitigate road impacts on wildlife corridors. We will overlay analyses of corridor network centrality with analyses of wildlife-vehicle collision risk to identify where high-importance corridors meet high-impact road segments. SageSTEP Longterm Ecological Monitoring Network

Proposed work will monitor for five years vegetation, fuels, wildlife, insects, and weather at 10 Sagebrush Steppe Treatment Evaluation Project (SageSTEP) sites, all of which have been treated to reduce either juniper encroachment (woodland sites) or cheatgrass invasion (sagebrush/cheatgrass sites). This region-wide coordinated bird monitoring program, supported by state, federal, tribal, nongovernmental organizations, and two statewide bird conservation partnerships, is designed to provide spatially-referenced baseline data for science-based biological planning and conservation design for the Great Northern LCC and its partners that is directly comparable with other landscapes and BCRs. A rapid range-wide assessment of bull trout distributions: a crowdsourced, eDNA-based approach with application to many aquatic species

The bull trout is an ESA-listed species that relies on cold stream environments across the Northwest and is expected to decline with climate change. Resource managers are charged with maintaining bull trout across their range, but monitoring this species is difficult and many populations have rarely or never been sampled. To reduce this uncertainty (and regulatory gridlock), we propose to coordinate a crowd-sourced field assessment of the distribution of bull trout in the U.S. by using inexpensive, reliable environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling.
