Observer-specific population indices for the USFWS Region Migratory Bird Management Arctic Coastal Plain study area. The survey consists of low-level aerial observations of waterfowl on a stratified strip transect design. The resulting data frame is several indices separated by observer and calculated using a standard ratio estimator. These data are output from the R package AKaerial and are also available within that package, see https://github.com/USFWS/AKaerial. The data used to produce these estimates contain known errors. Many but not all of these errors are corrected within the R package AKaerial. These data are presented for historical purposes only. See https://github.com/USFWS/ACP-Mapping and comments within...

This R code (Nest_Cards_QC.R) is used to process the raw legacy nest card data (1985 - 2019) and produce the quality controlled legacy nest card data for analysis and sharing. This code does not quality control the double searched plots (R2 plots in 1995-99), which is done in the file ‘PrepData.R’. Basic operations include transforming missing value to a common code, transforming other variable to match the data dictionary for nest cards, and resolving non-unique observer initials. The code requires the raw data (“1985-2019_Nest Cards_10-24-19_cleaned.xlsx”) and the table of observer names (“Observer Names_1985-2019_10-24-19.xlsx”). The code writes the QC nest card file “Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv”. Mostly obseration...

This collection contains the original “raw” survey data that were recorded and transcribed by each observer during the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) Aerial Breeding Pair Survey. Left-front and right-front seat observers recorded data on geese, swans, and cranes since 1985, while data on eiders, ducks, and waterbirds was recorded by a right-rear seat observer since 1989. These raw transcribed data should be used to produce updated quality-control (QC) datasets by running the quality assurance/quality control script “AKaerial.R” whenever the quality control procedures are revised or modified. The data files in this collection were named using the following naming convention: YKD(YKG)YYYY_RawObs_OOOO, where YKD=Duck...

FY2014Although the future of sage grouse depends on the future of sagebrush, we have limited ability to anticipate impacts of climate change on sagebrush populations. Current efforts to forecast sagebrush habitat typically rely on species distribution models (SDMs), which suffer from a variety of well-known weaknesses. However, by integrating SDMs with complementary research approaches, such as historical data analysis and mechanistic models, we can provide increased confidence in projections of habitat change. Our goal is to forecast the effect of climate change on the distribution and abundance of big sagebrush in order to inform conservation planning, and sage grouse management in particular, across the Intermountain...

A combination of altered fire regimes and pathogens has contributed towards densification and encroachment by shade-tolerant species into areas traditionally dominated by whitebark pine. As such, the CMP Hi5 Working Group technical team suggest canopy cover as a proxy for species encroachment. Stands with tree cover greater than 60% suggest successional species are outcompeting whitebark pine.

This is a comma delimited text file of the bird observations for the Arctic Coastal Plain survey. These observations have undergone an extensive quality control process that is ongoing and corrected several errors in the source data. Point observation of birds are given in coordinate reference system EPSG:4326 and are accurate only to +/- 500m. The field "Year" gives the calendar year that the survey was flown, "Stratum" gives the transect density strata name, "NavTransect" gives the transect identifier used for navigation by the pilot (this is not necessarily the same as the design transect), and "Obs_Type" is the social group (single, pair, etc.) of the bird observation, "Num" is the number of observation of...

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) Aerial Breeding Pair Survey provides data on the spring abundance of targeted waterfowl species nesting on the YKD coastal zone in western Alaska. This region supports millions of waterbirds that comprise one of the largest and most important waterfowl breeding grounds in North America, including species of concern such as the red-throated loon (Gavia stellata), emperor goose (Chen canagica), Pacific black brant (Branta bernicla nigricans), common eider (Somateria mollissima), black scoter (Melanitta nigra), long-tailed duck (Clangula hyemalis), and the threatened spectacled eider (Somateria fischeri). The YKD goose, swan, and crane survey was first implemented in 1985 to monitor...

This geopackage contains the density strata that were used to create the Alaska Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey four-year rotating panel design. This file was derived from a mid-1980’s ArcInfo coverage for the North Slope Eider Survey that was produced through the visual interpretation of 1:250,000-scale LANDSAT imagery and the known nesting density waterfowl in the area.

This collection contains the quality-control (QC) transcribed data from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Aerial Breeding Pair Survey. These QC data were produced from the “raw” data using the R Package “AKaerial.” The raw data were evaluated against the current data standards in the ‘AKaerial data dictionary’ and saved to new QC data files with associated log files that document any changes that were made. From 1985 to 1997, observers recorded bird observations out to 200 meters from the aircraft using continuously running tape players (with a locational accuracy of +/- 5 km), while an automated voice recording survey program (with a spatial accuracy of +/- 0.5 km) was used to record data from 1998 to present. The data...

R code that takes in the nest capture history data (chdata.csv), reformats it for model fitting in Program Mark via the R package RMark. A series of models of increasing complexity are fit and compared using AIC. Output is written to text files for each model but is generally not used or saved. Code can be run to generate model results and R workspaces/ object to inspect parameter estimates. The primary purpose of this code is to explore model structures for predicting detection and as an attempt to reproduce historically used parameter estimates in past nest plot reports (e.g., Fischer et al. 2017 and earlier). Results from ‘Model 7’ are most similar to detection estimates used in the past.

These are the observer names, observer initials, year, and unique observer number for all observe that collected data on the YKD nest plot project from 1985 to 2019. This data is used with the nest card data to in various ways, but primarily to calculate cumulative observer experience for nest detection rates. This file is also used for quality control and reconciling non-unique observer initials across years.

From 1995 to 1999, a subset of nest plots were searched twice by field crews to estimate nest detection probability by mark-recapture methods. Over the five years, 30 plots were searched twice and over 2700 unique nests were found. From these data, nest detection probability is estimated using a Huggins-type mark recapture model where individual-level covariate effects of nest and observer attributes were estimated. These estimates are then used to predict nest detection rates in other years based on covariates of nests and observers. Nest detection rates are then applied to annual plot search to estimate nest populations for each species in the sampled area.

FY2010In addition to regional Science and Traditional Ecological Knowledge projects that the Great Basin LCC (GBLCC) supports, GBLCC staff lend technical expertise to a range of projects and have contributed to important regional publications on a range of subjects. These publications range in type from textbooks, to management-oriented science and conservation plans, to scientific papers and have covered subjects like wind erosion following fire, soil microbiota response to drought, plant community resilience to invasive species, and alpine plant communities. In many cases these publications form foundations for scientifically-informed management strategies across the Great Basin.
A number of modeling approaches have been developed to predict the impacts of climate change on species distributions, performance and abundance. The stronger the agreement from models that represent different processes and are based on distinct and independent sources of information, the greater the confidence we can have in their predictions. Evaluating the level of confidence is particularly important when predictions are used to guide conservation or restoration decisions. We used a multi-model approach to predict climate change impacts on big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata), the dominant plant species on roughly 43 million hectares in the western United States and a key resource for many endemic wildlife species....
Understanding how annual climate variation affects population growth rates across a species’ range may help us anticipate the effects of climate change on species distribution and abundance. We predict that populations in warmer or wetter parts of a species’ range should respond negatively to periods of above average temperature or precipitation, respectively, whereas populations in colder or drier areas should respond positively to periods of above average temperature or precipitation. To test this, we estimated the population sensitivity of a common shrub species, big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata), to annual climate variation across its range. Our analysis includes 8175 observations of year-to-year change in...
