As coal companies closed business in Indiana many times they deposited their records at the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS). The records in most cases were delivered in boxes or full filing cabinets without documentation. The IGS has preliminarily sorted through the records filing them by company and if possible county or Township-Range to make them discoverable. The records can contain anything from maps, analysis, logs with or without picks, descriptions, correspondence, etc.

Continuous bedrock core from about 50 sites across CT. Stored in 1100 boxes. This collection has been rescued three times since its formation in the late 1980's. Formerly administrative responsibility was shared between the University of Connecticut Dept. of Geology and Geophysics (now disbanded) and the Dept. of Environmental Protection, Geological and Natural History Survey. The State Survey now houses the collection and is the sole administrator.

This collection includes field notes, interpretive geologic field maps, field station location maps, and other project materials, many of which are unpublished and archived by the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys. These materials have not been reviewed for accuracy, consistency, or completeness. The collection may contain data and documents pertaining to all related fields of geology, including oil and gas, geologic engineering, minerals industry, scientific data, and agency archives.

Most projects conducted by the MWRA have attached to them a geotechnical report and accompanying environmental information. There are also eighteen marine drilling reports on work in the Boston Harbor, as well as, two hardbound copies on the Geology of the Waschusett Reservoir Area. All reports are stored in the library at the main facility in Chelsea; however, not all project managers turn over reports to the librarian for storage. Most projects conducted by the MWRA, related to the construction of water and sewer lines, have attached with them, a geotechnical report and accompanying environmental information. Other paper reports include: eighteen marine drilling reports from work in Boston Harbor; as well as two...
Collections of primarily work maps and data from former Indiana Geological Survey employees or colleagues that used data from Indiana Geological Survey source materials.

This collection is comprised of legacy DGGS geologic maps that have been converted to the single-map USGS Geologic Map Schema (GeMS; formerly known as NCGMP09). Initial conversions will be conducted on maps in areas with critical mineral potential, benefiting DGGS and USGS critical mineral studies in Alaska. Future additions to this collection will include both converted geologic maps, and new geologic maps created using the GeMS schema.
The National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS) began as a cooperative venture between the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and State geological agencies in 1975 and focused on the stratigraphy and chemistry of coal. The current component databases of NCRDS include: USTRAT: Stratigraphic data related to coal (e.g. drill holes, measured sections) USCHEM (COALQUAL): Ultimate, proximate, and USGS-generated major-, minor-, and trace-element data for coal samples collected by USGS and States. USCOAL: A historical database of coal resource estimates compiled from publications prior to 1978 The collections referenced here are for historical purposes. The most current and up-to-date coal information is available electronically...

This collection is comprised of digital, slide and print photographs taken during energy resource related field projects from 1970-2020. The majority of the individual items associated with this collection are field photos taken by Charles (Gil) Mull and Rocky Reifenstuhl. These photos document field sites, geologic features, landscapes and landforms from the various areas of Alaska. There are approximately 43,000 photos and slides that still need to be culled, documented and archived. 98% of the photos are in digital format and need to be manually matched with their locations from geologists' field notes. The remaining 2% are slide and print format that need the same attention but are in fair to good condition.

This collection contains hand samples gathered by IGWS field teams under the direction of State Geologist Charles Deiss (1945-1959) between 1947-1957 in support of research projects resulting in multiple Survey publications. The collection is organized by geologic age and contains materials from the Ordovician through Pennsylvanian periods.

In 2008, Virginia Department of Energy received by donation from the University of Virginia (UVA) a large collection of rock, mineral, and fossil specimens that was at risk of imminent disposal or dispersal due to the lack of adequate storage facilities. The collection includes many valuable and irreplaceable geologic specimens collected in Virginia by UVA students, faculty, and geoscientists from the early Virginia Geological Survey. Parts of the collection were at one time displayed in the Lewis Brooks Hall of Natural Science, which opened in 1877. Following the closure of the UVA Department of Geology in the 1960s, the collection was moved to various warehouse storage areas, where it was largely forgotten and...
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the U.S. Department of the Interior through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) jointly managed the Landsat program beginning in the early 1970s. NASA built and launched the satellites and the USGS preserved and distributed an archive of more than three million Landsat images to people in over 180 nations and territories. A joint effort between the Department of Interior and NASA began, ultimately producing the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) program. Perhaps the greatest contribution of Landsat is the ability to understand how the Earth's land surface is changing through time.

Library collection of 34 out-of-print Biennial Reports of the Commissioners of the State Geological and Natural History Survey to the Governor and State Legislature of Connecticut. These historic reports chronicle the legacy and evolution of the State Geological and Natural History Survey of Connecticut from its inception in 1903 until it became an entity of the state environmental agency in 1971. This collection include 682 pages of text, 18 figures, 9 plates, and 2 map sheets. These reports are valuable to science historians, academic scholars, geoscience professionals, and public policy experts. A related Connecticut Survey Library collection contains associated historic correspondence. Although most of the...
The Coal Mine Information System (CMIS) is a repository for historical coal mining information in Indiana. It was developed through a cooperative agreement between the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Reclamation. In addition to historical documents, prepared maps and reports, the CMIS has compiled digital geographic data and associated mine information such as workings maps, entrances and subsidence areas. This data is publicly accessible through an online map viewer (link below).
The Indiana Geological Survey has a library of reference collections and miscellaneous sources of coal information that IGS researchers have collected over the years. The library includes industry publications, annual reports, miscellaneous information pamphlets and books. The materials cover Indiana, the United States, or coal in-general. Much of the material is dated but could be used for historical purpose.
