These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This digital dataset defines the SUB package arrays for the model grid, critical head, thickness of fine-grained deposits, and skeletal-elastic-storage used in the transient hydrologic model of the Central Valley flow system. The Central Valley encompasses an approximate 50,000 square-kilometer region of California. The complex hydrologic system of the Central Valley is simulated using the USGS numerical modeling code MODFLOW-FMP...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set is a digital soil survey and generally is the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was prepared by digitizing maps, by compiling information onto a planimetric correct base and digitizing, or by revising digitized maps using remotely sensed and other information. This data set consists of georeferenced digital map data and computerized attribute...

This archive contains the logistic mapping output data at the conceptual well locations. Data are provided in spreadsheets containing the estimated probabilities of nitrate concentrations greater than 2 milligrams per liter at hypothetical 150 feet and 300 feet deep wells for each of the five-year categories from 2000 to 2019 and vulnerability differences between five-year categories when one or both of the predicted probabilities was equal to or greater than 50 percent.

Reported atrazine, carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, and fipronil concentrations for selected U.S. Geological Survey pesticide sampling sites were downloaded from the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System (NWIS) and modified for input into the SEAWAVE-QEX model. Modifications included identification of appropriate censoring limits to use for samples in which the pesticides were not detected, rounding reported concentrations to a consistent level of precision, and adjusting reported concentrations to correct for temporal trends in laboratory recovery rates.

This dataset tabulates randomized simulation results for amounts of copper in metric tons in 163 permissive tracts for undiscovered porphyry copper deposits. The data from the child item Simulation results_sorted.csv for each permissive are randomized to allow aggregation of regional and global data using an assumption of statistical independence. This was done by generating a column of 4,999 random numbers and resorting the 4,999 sorted simulations by those random numbers. The randomized distributions for each permissive tract in a region were then summed to compute regional and global totals. For an explanation of aggregation assumptions and underlying mathematics, see Schuenemeyer, J.H., Zientek, M.L, and Box,...
The the Williston Basin has been a leading petroleum producer for over a half century with development beginning around the turn of the 20th century. The spatial and temporal spread of the associated wells is important from both an economic perspective but also a natural resource view. These data were gathered from the state/province oil and gas divisions for use by USGS researchers and their collaborators in water resource specific studies. Each state/province provides slightly different information for each well, with some providing more information and others less. We attempted to create a spatial cross-walk that allowed each database to be merged to one another to create a final regional spatial database. Each...

The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a sedimentation survey of Lago La Plata, Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, during March and April 2015 to provide up-to-date information about the relation of pool elevation and storage volume in the reservoir. The survey was conducted in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority. A total of 264 navigation lines were surveyed, using a depth sounding device coupled to a global positioning system. The results of the survey were used to prepare a bathymetric map showing the reservoir bottom referenced with respect to the spillway elevation.

An upward-looking acoustic Doppler velocity meter (ADVM, SonTek SW, 3.0 MHz) located in a tidal channel of the Nisqually River Delta at site D3 (N 47d 05’ 36.5”/W 122d 42’ 42.9”) measured water level and current velocity at 15-minute intervals from April 1, 2017 to July 20, 2017 (80.9 days, excluding missing periods). This site is in a tidal channel at a levee breach where flow is tidally influenced. The water depth of the sensor ranged from 0.05 to 3.04 m and may have been lower during periods of extreme low tide. The elevation (NAVD88) of the ADVM sensor was surveyed by RTN-GPS. The offset to convert all water depth time-series data to water surface elevation (NAVD88) is 0.47 meters. The instrument temperature...

This report presents the mineral chemistry dataset that was used in a published study of serpentinite-rich gouge from an actively creeping trace of the Bartlett Springs Fault in northern California. The fault gouge consists of porphyroclasts of antigorite serpentinite, talc, chlorite, and tremolite-actinolite in a sheared matrix of the same materials. The compositions of spinels in the serpentinite clasts (Table S1) indicate a forearc-peridotite origin for the serpentinite, consistent with a source in the Coast Range ophiolite. The other major minerals in both the porphyroclasts and matrix were analyzed (Table S2) for comparison with serpentinite-bearing gouge from the creeping section of the San Andreas Fault....
We quantified permafrost plateau carbon (C) and post-thaw C stocks across a peatland permafrost thaw chronosequence in Interior Alaska to evaluate whether C losses occurred with thaw . Peat core macrofossil reconstructions revealed three stratigraphic layers of peat: (1) a base layer of fen/marsh peat, (2) forested permafrost plateau peat and, (3) where permafrost thaw has occurred, collapse-scar bog peat. Radiocarbon dating revealed that peat initiated at all sites within the last 2,500 years, and dating transitions between stratigraphic layers allowed us to determine that permafrost aggraded during the Little Ice Age and degraded within the last several decades. We found the timing of permafrost thaw within each...

Nutritional ecology forms the interface between environmental variability and large herbivore behaviour, life history characteristics, and population dynamics. Forage conditions in arid and semi-arid regions are driven by unpredictable spatial and temporal patterns in rainfall. Diet selection by herbivores should be directed towards overcoming the most pressing nutritional limitation (i.e. energy, protein [nitrogen, N], moisture) within the constraints imposed by temporal and spatial variability in forage conditions. We investigated the influence of precipitation-induced shifts in forage nutritional quality and subsequent large herbivore responses across widely varying precipitation conditions in an arid environment....
