Water, bed sediment, and biota were sampled in selected streams from Butte to near Missoula, Montana, as part of a monitoring program in the upper Clark Fork Basin of western Montana. The sampling program was led by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

This data release contains input data for hydrologic simulations of the Alaska Domain application of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Precipitation Runoff Modelling System (PRMS) as implemented in the National Hydrologic Model (NHM) infrastructure (Regan and others, 2018). This data release and accompanying spreadsheet illustrate the ecosystem scale selenium model for Lake Koocanusa described in USGS Open-File Report 2020-1098, "Understanding and Documenting the Scientific Basis of Selenium Ecological Protection in Support of Site-Specific Guidelines Development for Lake Koocanusa, Montana, U.S.A., and British Columbia, Canada." In 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Blackfeet Water Department, initiated a multi-year hydrologic investigation of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The investigation was designed to increase understanding of the water resources of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation including Birch Creek which forms the southern boundary of the reservation. Streamflow is controlled in the headwaters of Birch Creek through the outflow from Swift Reservoir at Swift Dam. Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (MT FWP), in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center (WY-MT WSC), Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) collected fish from the Koocanusa Reservoir in 2021 for tissue analysis. Fish tissue collected included muscle, eggs, liver, and whole body. Analysis of tissues included characterization of the concentration of selenium, mercury and methyl mercury, nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes, and vitamins A and E. The purpose of these analyses was to inform state and federal management agencies on transboundary coal mining impacts to downstream fish health.

A monitoring well was installed in the Wasatch aquifer in the Green River Basin, Sublette County, Wyoming in August 2015. Core collected during drilling activities was described to a depth of 170 feet. The data release contains a detailed description of the lithology and physical characteristics of the core sections, as well as numerous photographs. The data release was produced in compliance with the new 'open data' requirements as a way to make the scientific products associated with USGS investigations available to the public.
This data release presents drainage-basin characteristics for 12,639 road and stream intersections in Montana. The drainage-basin characteristics presented include those computed by the Montana StreamStats application (McCarthy and others, 2016). Statistical analysis of the road and stream intersections was included in the report "Peak-Flow Variability, Peak-Flow Informational Needs, and Consideration of Regional Regression Analyses in Managing the Crest-Stage Gage Network in Montana" (Sando, 2021).

In 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Park Service(NPS), initiated a study using surrogate technology to predict real-time metallic-contaminant concentrations (MCCs) in the Clark Fork at two USGS streamgages that bracket Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site (GRKO) near Deer Lodge, Montana. Neonicotinoids, a widely used class of insecticide, have been found in surface waters globally. They pose a risk to non-target species found in aquatic environments such as aquatic macroinvertebrates. To better understand the effects of the neonicotinoids imidacloprid, clothianidin and their mixtures on aquatic communities we ran a 30 day mesocosm test. Rock trays were colonized with natural benthic communities in the Cache La Poudre River, located in the mountains of Northern Colorado, and relocated to a laboratory experimental stream setting. This dataset includes the field measurements and laboratory analyses of surface water, seston, fish tissue, and sediment samples collected from Bighorn Lake, within Bighorn Canyon National Recreation area (BICA), during high flow (July 2015) and low flow (August 2016) conditions. The study area includes 7-9 sampling sites that follow a transect spanning the entire length of the reservoir from the Bighorn and Shoshone River inflows to the afterbay and tailwater below Yellowtail dam.
