Accurate, high-resolution maps of bedrock outcrops are extremely valuable. The increasing availability of high-resolution imagery can be coupled with machine learning techniques to improve regional bedrock maps. This data release contains training data created for developing a machine learning model capable of identifying exposed bedrock across the entire Sierra Nevada Mountains (California, USA). The training data consist of 20 thematic rasters in GeoTIFF format, where image labels represent three categories: rock, not rock, and no data. These training data labels were created using 0.6-m imagery from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) acquired in 2016. Eight existing labeled sites were available from...
This study applied historical aerial imagery and satellite imagery to create digital surface models (DSMs) of the Helmand River Valley situated in southwestern Afghanistan. The historical imagery, collected in 1952 by Fairchild Aerial Surveys Incorporated (FAS), at 1:40,000 scale, represents the earliest known aerial photographic archive of the Helmand Valley landscape. Structure-from-motion (SfM) multi-view stereo (MVS) photogrammetric techniques were used together with ground control points collected from high resolution satellite imagery to create a 5m digital elevation model (DEM) and 2m orthoimage. The historical DEM was evaluated for accuracy against a 2006 5m DEM using SPOT-5 HRG satellite imagery which was...
A two-dimensional model and digital flood-inundation maps were developed for a 30-mile reach of the Wabash River near the Interstate 64 (I-64) Bridge near Grayville, Illinois. The flood-inundation maps, which can be accessed through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Flood Inundation Mapping Science web site at http://water.usgs.gov/osw/flood_inundation/, depict estimates of the areal extent and depth of flooding corresponding to selected water levels (stages) at the USGS streamgage on the Wabash River at Mount Carmel, Ill (USGS station number 03377500). Near-real-time stages at this streamgage may be obtained on the internet from the USGS National Water Information System at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ or the National...

On 14-15 August 2015, helicopter-based measurements were made of the volcanic gases emitted from Mount Cleveland, AK. An upward-looking differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) system was used to measure incident scattered solar ultraviolet radiation while traversing beneath the plume on multiple occasions 14-15 August. This data was used to derive SO2 emission rates. Additionally, a Multi-Component Gas Analyzer System (Multi-GAS) was used to make measurements of trace gas concentrations while on a dedicated measurement flight passing through the gas plume on 15 August (19:15 - 19:56 UTC). Radiance spectra and gas compositions were both recorded at 1 second time resolution. Each spectrum and gas measurement...

The Red River of the North (Red River) transports phosphorus from North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota, to Manitoba, Canada, and eventually into Lake Winnipeg. Phosphorus load (or flux) is the amount of total phosphorus (TP) transported by the Red River. The effect of TP load on water quality is a concern, especially with respect to downstream eutrophication issues in Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. There is interest at the State and International level to reduce TP flux – an expensive proposition, depending on the method (controlling sources, settling ponds, buffer strips, changes in land use) that is not always effective during spring runoff. The purpose of the study for which these data were developed...

From 2013 to 2015, bathymetric surveys of New York City’s six West of Hudson reservoirs (Ashokan, Cannonsville, Neversink, Pepacton, Rondout, and Schoharie) were performed to provide updated capacity tables and bathymetric maps. Depths were surveyed with a single-beam echo sounder and real-time kinematic global positioning system (RTK-GPS) along planned transects at predetermined intervals for each reservoir. A separate set of echo sounder data was collected along transects at oblique angles to the main transects for accuracy assessment. Field survey data was combined with water-surface elevations in a geographic information system to create three-dimensional surfaces representing reservoir-bed elevations in the...

This data set contains cross-section geometry and sediment-size distribution data collected in the fall of 2017 from Muddy Creek and North Fork Gunnison River below Paonia Reservoir, western Colorado. Six cross-sections were surveyed using Real-Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (RTK-GNSS) methods to document channel geometry below the reservoir in 2015. Those same cross-sections were re-surveyed using the same methods in 2016 and 2017 to document any changes. One cross-section was surveyed on Muddy Creek below Paonia Reservoir, and five cross-sections were surveyed from North Fork Gunnison River below Paonia Reservoir. All six cross-sections are incorporated in this data release within one shapefile....

This table reports major, minor, and trace element compositions of bulk drill core samples from the Duluth Complex, Minnesota. Major elements were measured using wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES); minor and trace elements were determined using ICP-AES, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HGAAS). Total carbon, carbonate carbon, and total sulfur were also analyzed. Total carbon was measured by combustion followed by infrared detection on LECO instrumentation. Carbonate carbon in the bulk rock samples was determined as carbon dioxide by coulometric titration. Total...

These data were compiled to allow examination of northern spotted owl territorial occupancy dynamics, especially with regards to the roles played by habitat and competition with barred owl in past and future dynamics. Data are estimates of parameters derived from previous modelling of northern spotted owl territorial occupancy dynamics. These data were collected as part of monitoring of northern spotted owl demography. Associated code allows analysis of these estimates to understand the roles of competition and habitat in recent northern spotted owl declines and to predict the future of northern spotted owl under various management scenarios.
Note: this data release has been superseded by version 2.0, available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9V75F9Q. Two nonnative bigheaded carp species have invaded the Illinois River system and are a potential threat to the Great Lakes ecosystem. Discharges from industry, wastewater treatment plants, and urban and agricultural runoff, may be a factor contributing to the stalling of the upstream movement of the bigheaded carp population front near Illinois Waterway mile 278. In 2015, the U.S. Geological Survey collected 4 sets of water samples under a range of seasonal and hydrologic conditions from 3 locations upstream and 4 locations downstream from river mile 278 using a Lagrangian-style sampling strategy. Water...

The data set also includes ground motion residuals from comparing earthquake ground shaking with commonly used models for predicting ground motions in the U.S.
Discharges from pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities (PMFs) previously have been identified as important sources of pharmaceuticals to the environment. Yet few studies are available to establish the influence of PMFs to the pharmaceutical source contribution to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and waterways at the national scale. Consequently, a national network of 13 WWTPs receiving PMF discharges and 7 WWTPs with no PMF input (controls) were selected from across the United States to assess the influence of PMF input for a diverse suite of pharmaceuticals being formulated for a range of WWTP sizes. WWTP effluent samples were collected and analyzed for 120 pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical degradates. Of...

This data set contains county-level estimates of nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizer, for both farm and nonfarm uses, for the conterminous United States, for 1987 through 2012. State-level farm and nonfarm nitrogen and phosphorus were derived from the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials (AAPFCO) commercial fertilizer sales data. State estimates were then allocated to the county-level using fertilizer expenditure from the Census of Agriculture as county weights for farm fertilizer, and effective population density as county weights for nonfarm fertilizer. Data computations for 2007 - 2012 estimates are results of methods applied directly from Gronberg and Spahr, 2012. Data for 1987 - 2006 are...
