Caribou meat. Alaska. August 18, 1911. General collection album caption: Caribou meat and native implements north of the Arctic Circle. After having traveled for more than a month without seeing any signs of a settlement, an exploring party of the Geological Survey found at the head of ordinary boat navigation on Noatak River, a stream in northwestern Alaska that throughout its course lies north of the Arctic Circle, a group of old sod hovels which had formerly been occupied by natives who used to hunt in the region. Game was still plentiful there, as is shown in the picutre by the meat of the caribou, which was killed near this place by members of the Survey party.
