The Hawai‘i Biannual Waterbird Survey (Survey) has evolved since its establishment in 1955 to meet changing information needs for the conservation of endemic and migratory waterbirds in Hawai‘i. From 2005 to 2015, information needs for the management and recovery of endemic, endangered waterbirds were not being addressed by the Survey. Although waterbird counts continued during this time, data entry and management lapsed and reconciliation of spatial and tabular data was only partially completed by 2007. As a result, analyses of count data, distribution, and population trends were out of date and of limited utility for informing recovery objectives and waterbird conservation efforts. DLCC’s Vegetation Map Pilot is a project envisioned initially as a supervised classification of two or three small areas of the DLCC. DLCC technical stakeholders advised changing from a supervised classification to an object oriented classification (OOC) method.This report presents the findings, feasibility, and lessons-learned during the exploration and object oriented classification process and results of the two sites on the United States-Mexico border, this is needed information before considering a full-scale, Vegetation Mapping Project, to include bigger areas or the totality of the Desert LCC region.

We have developed autonomous and high precision sensor arrays to monitor growth of individual native plants along with local environmental conditions, coupled with wireless data loggers that can provide real-time data available to managers and the wider public. We deployed an experimental set of these sensors, integrated with a weather station, 2 webcams, and a live web portal (construction in progress) to showcase how this real time information can be useful to relevant managers while also raising awareness of the challenges of climate change adaptation and Hawaiian plant conservation in general. The ETPBR LCC Steering Committee (SC) consisted of 20-30 representatives from state, federal, tribal, and NGO entities. In December 2012, the LCC Steering Committee began drafting a strategic plan to provide a foundation and structure to carry out the mission and vision of the LCC and its partners. The SC met twice a year from 2012 to 2016 in various locations around the Midwest. Staff worked with the committee and project investigators to compile information for a set of descriptive flyers, posters, presentations, and annual updates.
The Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the windward slopes of Mauna Kea is an important habitat for native forest birds and plants, including several threatened and endangered species. The region has been subjected to a variety of pressures over time, including clearing of large swaths of native forest for agriculture and livestock grazing, the intentional and accidental introduction of invasive plants and animals that have degraded habitats and outcompeted native species (e.g., pigs, rats, mosquitos, Japanese white-eye), and climate change-driven changes in temperatures, rainfall patterns, and wildfire regimes. This scenario planning decision support tool for the Kankakee River basin as a first case study/proof-of concept. Hydrology models, both surface water and groundwater, and ecology of the Kankakee River watershed will be combined to evaluate the effects of habitat restoration on water suppy ecosystem services, agricultural irrigation demands, urbanization, and waterfowl habitat, and sportsman and recreational user interests. Various scenarios for restoration identified with peer input were tested for the watershed. The Caribbean Landscape Conservation Cooperative (CLCC) recently completed the CLCC Science Strategy: Mission Alignment to outline shared conservation values among CLCC partner entities. After meeting this important benchmark, Steering Committee (SC) members and outside reviewers suggested that the CLCC adopt a structured approach for integrating shared values and providing greater context and guidance for Science Strategy planning and implementation. This project developed a series of tools, GIS maps, and plots to visualize the unique and complex climate on the islands of Hawai’i. This report descibes those resources and where they are located. These outputs help visualize the long-term trends in the distribution of extreme precipitation across the island chain, as well as changes in the occurrences of very hot days and very cold nights. Overall, the number of hot days has increased across the state while the number of cold nights have declined. The existence of the “Climate at a Glance” web tool, available through NCEI, supports 8 long-term stations in Hawai’i that showcases the temperature and precipitation trends since 1900. Conversion of grassland restored under the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) back into croplands is occurring at a rapid rate at CRP contracts expire. A fee-market approach may be necessary to incentivize preservation of these restored grassland by assessing value to ecosystems services such as carbon sequestration.
The objective of this study is to produce a map of invasive fern populations across approximately 35,000 acres of forests in windward Moloka‘i and in windward Mauna Kahalawai, Maui. This will enable the Division of Forestry and Wildlife and partners to control incipient populations of these weeds efficiently and effectively. The Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) has successfully completed and in some areas exceeded the grant deliverables. The data has shown that invasive Mulesfoot (AngEve) and Australian Tree Fern (SphCoo) are at manageable levels in the northeastern forests of Molokai and West Maui. This report shares the results of a survey of participants in the vulnerability assessment and scenario planning workshops that EcoAdapt conducted across the main Hawaiian Islands from August 2016 to January 2017. The report is an evaluation of the effectiveness and utility of the workshops from the perspective of the respondents that includes textual and graphical survey results with a final summary of common postivive feedback themes and common suggestions for improvement.

Describing the social network that links the interconnected partners is the first step to leverage the network’s capacity to be greater than the sum of its parts.The Northwest Boreal Landscape Conservation Cooperative partners and a social network scientist are applying social network theory to create a system of nodes and edges of a Conservation Social Network. Climate change vulnerability is the degree to which a species is susceptible to adverse impacts of climate change based on exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. A vulnerability assessment (VA) is a tool that helps resource managers identify which populations are most at risk by evaluating whether key traits will negatively or positively affect a species. In this study, I conducted a literature review of climate change research using online databases to find evidence as to why particular species traits make species more or less likely to decline. This report describes the final design for the Conservation Planning Atlas. The Conservation Biology Institute worked with Pacific Islands Climate Change Cooperative (PICCC) staff to design, customize, and host spatial datasets in an online PICCC Conservation Planning Atlas (CPA). The Atlas design and development process was informed by five focus groups that were convened by PICCC to gather stakeholder needs and identify priority spatial datasets for association with the CPA.

As a USFWS Fellow, I worked with Caribbean Landscape Conservation Cooperative (CLCC) staff, USFWS Ecological Services (ES) staff, US Forest Service to (1) develop and implement an acoustic monitoring network to assess native bat habitat use in Puerto Rico and (2) assist in creating an acoustic database structure the existing CLCC web –based data portal to form a base for developing a wider acoustic monitoring program.
