The paper version of the Geologic Map of the eastern part of the Challis National Forest and vicinity, Idaho was compiled by Anna Wilson and Betty Skipp in 1994. The geology was compiled on a 1:250,000 scale topographic base map. TechniGraphic System, Inc. of Fort Collins Colorado digitized this map under contract for N.Shock. G.Green edited and prepared the digital version for publication as a GIS database. The digital geologic map database can be queried in many ways to produce a variety of geologic maps.

This cover contains faults in the unconformity at the Cambrian-Precambrianboundary. These data were contributed byGlenn Bear of Indiana University as part of the work onhis doctoral thesis. The southern part of the map was produced byJames Drahovzal of the Kentucky Geological Survey and merged withBear's map of the rest of the map area and beyond.Public and proprietary seismic reflection and welldata were used to define the basement structure.A prominent east-west structure in the southern half of the maparea is the western end of the Rough Creek Graben. The geologic map was created in GSMAP at Socorro, New Mexico by Orin Anderson and Glen Jones and published as the Geologic Map of New Mexico 1:500,000 in GSMAP format in 1994. This graphic file was converted to ARC/INFO format by Greb Green and GlenJones and released as the Geologic Map of New Mexico in ARC/INFO format in 1997.

Together with the accompanying text file (cdbegeo.txt or cdbegeo.ps), it provides current information on the geologic structure and stratigraphy of the area covered. The database delineates map units that are identified by general age and lithology following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey. The scale of the source maps limits the spatial resolution (scale) of the database to 1:24,000 or smaller.

This is a polygon coverage of the inclination of strata within theKaiparowits Plateau. Inclinations of strata are attributed incategories that range from 0 - 6, 6 - 12, 12 - 25, and > 25degrees. The range-of-dip was compiled at 1:125,000-scale fromstructure contour lines and from dip measurements on 1:24,000-scalepublished geologic maps of the Kaiparowits Plateau. These geologicmaps are referenced in figure 2 of Hettinger and others (1996).The outside polygon defines the base of the coal-bearing John HenryMember of the Straight Cliffs Formation (Upper Cretaceous) east of112 degrees of longitude. Geologic data from a generalized geologic map of the Coeur d'Alene mining district by Gott and Cathrall (1980) was entered into a geographic information system (GIS) as part of a larger effort to create a regional digital geology for the Pacific Northwest. The map area is located in northern Idaho and extends across the state border into western Montana.
