The Mound Spring quadrangle, the southwestern-most 7.5'quadrangle of the area of the Las Vegas 1:100,000-scalequadrangle, is entirely within the Pahrump Valley, spanning theNevada/California State line. New geologic mapping of thepredominantly Quaternary materials is combined with new studiesof gravity and geochronology in this quadrangle. Elevenpredominantly fine-grained units are delineated, including playasediment, dune sand, and deposits associated with several cyclesof past groundwater discharge and distal fan sedimentation. These units are intercalated with 5 predominantly coarse-grainedalluvial-fan and wash gravel units mainly derived from the SpringMountains. The gravel units are distinguished on the basis...

This digital geologic map compilation presents new polygon (i.e., geologic map unit contacts), line (i.e., fault, fold axis, dike, and caldera wall), and point (i.e., structural attitude) vector data for the Thirsty Canyon NW 7 1/2' quadrangle in southern Nevada. The map database, which is at 1:24,000-scale resolution, provides geologic coverage of an area of current hydrogeologic and tectonic interest. The Thirsty Canyon NW quadrangle is located in southern Nye County about 20 km west of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and 30 km north of the town of Beatty. The map area is underlain by extensive layers of Neogene (about 14 to 4.5 million years old [Ma]) mafic and silicic volcanic rocks that are temporally and spatially...

This geologic map database is a bedrock compilation of the Beatty30'x 60' quadrangle in southern Nevada and adjoining parts ofCalifornia. The database represents a new compilation at1:100,000-scale of the southern part of the southwestern Nevadavolcanic field and Paleozoic and late Precambrian sedimentary rocksin Bare Mountain and the Funeral Mountains. The map area includesthe entire region around Yucca Mountain, the proposed nationalhigh-level nuclear waste repository, and the eastern part of DeathValley National Park. A major epithermal disseminated gold depositis being mined at Ladd Mountain, in the southeastern BullfrogHills, and the geology of numerous other areas of mineralization inthe Bullfrog Hills and...

This digital geologic and tectonic database of the Death Valley ground-water model area, as well as its accompanying geophysical maps, are compiled at 1:250,000 scale. The map compilation presents new polygon, line, and point vector data for the Death Valley region. The map area is enclosed within a 3 degree X 3 degree area along the border of southern Nevada and southeastern California. In addition to the Death Valley National Park and Death Valley-Furnace Creek fault systems, the map area includes the Nevada Test Site, the southwest Nevada volcanic field, the southern end of the Walker Lane (from southern Esmeralda County, Nevada, to the Las Vegas Valley shear zone and Stateline fault system in Clark County, Nevada),...

This digital geologic map of the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and vicinity, as well as its accompanying digital geophysical maps, are compiled at 1:100,000 scale. The map compilation presents new polygon (geologic map unit contacts), line (fault, fold axis, metamorphic isograd, dike, and caldera wall) and point (structural attitude) vector data for the NTS and vicinity, Nye, Lincoln, and Clark Counties, Nevada, and Inyo County, California. The map area covers two 30 x 60-minute quadrangles-the Pahute Mesa quadrangle to the north and the Beatty quadrangle to the south-plus a strip of 7.5-minute quadrangles on the east side-72 quadrangles in all. In addition to the NTS, the map area includes the rest of the southwest Nevada...

The depth of the basin beneath Frenchman Flat is estimatedusing a gravity inversion method. This dataset is distributed as an XYZ ASCII format data filegenerated from the 2002 gravity inversion model of the bedrockbeneath Frenchman Flat basin. Data forms a rectangular grid ofdata values in the defined projection. The data values are thedepth below the land surface,in meters, of the modeled locationof the Pre-Tertiary basement surface. The report whichaccompanies the data explains the modeling process and results.

The locations of principal faults and structural zones that may influence ground-water flow were compiled in support of a three-dimensional ground-water model for the Death Valley regional flow system (DVRFS), which covers 80,000 square km in southwestern Nevada and southeastern California. Faults include Neogene extensional and strike-slip faults and pre-Tertiary thrust faults. Emphasis was given to characteristics of faults and deformed zones that may have a high potential for influencing hydraulic conductivity. These include: (1) faulting that results in the juxtaposition of stratigraphic units with contrasting hydrologic properties, which may cause ground-water discharge and other perturbations in the flow system;...

Dust samples taken annually for five years from 55 sites insouthern Nevada and California provide an unparalleled sourceof information on modern rates of dust deposition, grain size, and mineralogical and chemical composition. The relations ofmodern dust to climatic factors, type and lithology of dustsource, and regional wind patterns shed new light on theprocesses of dust entrainment and deposition.A project to study modern dust deposition relative to soils insouthern Nevada and California was initiated in 1984 under theauspices of the Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project(Interagency Agreement DE-AI08-78ET44802). The primary purposeof the dust-deposition project was to provide data on moderndust composition...

This digital map compilation incorporates fault, air photolineament, and earthquake epicenter data from within the PahuteMesa 30' by 60' quadrangle, southern Nye County, Nevada (fig. 1).The compilation contributes to the U.S. Department of Energy's YuccaMountain Project, established to determine whether or not the YuccaMountain Site is suitable for the disposal of high-level nuclearwaste. Studies of local and regional faulting and earthquakeactivity, including the features depicted on the accompanying map,are carried out to help characterize seismic hazard and tectonicprocesses that may be relevant to the future stability of YuccaMountain. The Yucca Mountain site lies in the central part of theBeatty 30' by 60'...

Ground-water flow through the region south and west of Frenchman Flat, in the Ash Meadows subbasin of the Death Valley ground-water flow system, is controlled mostly by faults which arrange the distribution of permeable and impermeable rocks. In addition, most permeability is along fractures caused by faulting in carbonate rocks. Large faults are more likely to reach the potentiometric surface as deep as 325 meters below the ground surface and are more likely to effect the flow path than small faults. This study concentrated on identifying large faults, especially where they cut carbonate rocks. Small faults, however, may develop as much permeability as large faults if they are penetrative and are part of an anastomosing...

Yucca Mountain, Nye County, Nevada, has been identified as a potential site for underground storage of high-level radioactive nuclear waste. Detailed bedrock geologic maps form an integral part of the site characterization program by providing the fundamental framework and structural setting for the area in and adjacent to the site of the potential repository.
