This dataset is a polygon coverage of the resource areas of the Lower Kittanning coal zone. The polygons are subdivided into 2 categories: resource areas inside the outcrop, and areas either too thin, outside the outcrop, or beyond data collection limits. The coal zone must contain at least 14 inches of coal to be a resource. This spatial data set of the Lower Kittanning coal bed and known mined areas is one of many Geographic Information System (GIS) products of the National Coal Assessment that is being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with State geological surveys and other Federal and State agencies. The Lower Kittanning coal bed is an important economic coal in the northern part of the...

The Pittsburgh coal bed is composed of regionally persistent divisions- a roof division (coals and shales) and a lower division, referred to as the "main bench". This dataset is a polygon coverage of the elevation of the top of the Pittsburgh Coal bed main bench, in feet above MSL. It was produced by gridding (producing 300 meter cells) 7,101 point-source data mainly from the National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS) of the USGS, using ISM (Version 7.1) software. The grid was subsequently contoured in 50-ft intervals and imported to ARC/INFO. The elev_st item for each polygon reflects a value halfway between the bounding contour lines. Coverage name: c9024st (024 is the bed code assigned to the Pittsburgh Coal...

This file contains data for selected significant, buried Quaternary sediments, which is one layer of information on this CD-ROM, USGS Digital Data Series #38 (Soller and Packard, 1998). Together, all layers (10 of them) compose the digital version of a 1:1,000,000- scale map of Quaternary deposits (including both glacial and Holocene sediments) compiled for the glaciated area of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains (that is, the area covered by the Laurentide ice sheets). Parts of southern Ontario, areas beneath the Great Lakes, and parts of the submerged eastern seaboard are also included on the map. The paper version of the map is Soller (1993a, b, 1994, 1998, and in press). The map is a regional synthesis...

This spatial dataset of the Upper Freeport coal bed is one of many Geographic Information System (GIS) products of the National Coal Resource Assessment that is being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with State geological surveys and other Federal and State agencies. The Upper Freeport coal bed is an important economic coal in the northern part of the Appalachian Basin and is of additional importance because it occurs stratigraphically at the boundary between the Middle Pennsylvanian Allegheny and Upper Pennsylvanian Conemaugh Groups throughout most of the Appalachian foreland basin in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland. The top of the Allegheny Group is defined as the top of the...
