This is a point coverage that contains data for coal and otherstratigraphic horizons in the John Henry Member of the StraightCliffs Formation (Upper Cretaceous) east of 112 degrees oflongitude in the Kaiparowits Plateau. The item map# is the numberon the index map (Figure A, Plate 1) that refers to a record in adata table (Appendix 1) in Hettinger and others (1996). Bufferswere drawn at a three-mile distance from data points in thiscoverage to create the reliability coverage. This coverage alsoincludes arcs representing lines of cross section shown in Figs. B,C, D and E, Plate 1 (Hettinger and others, 1996).

This is a coverage of the Colorado Plateau coal assessment study area. The study area outline was drawn on the county lines that most closely outline the coal-bearing rocks in the Colorado Plateau Region. The county outlines originate from a national coverage for which lines were extracted from U.S. Census 1990 TIGER/line files using an AML program written by Nebert, D., and Negri, M., USGS-Water Resources Division (WRD), running on two Data General 6220 servers.

This is a polygon coverage of the inclination of strata within theKaiparowits Plateau. Inclinations of strata are attributed incategories that range from 0 - 6, 6 - 12, 12 - 25, and > 25degrees. The range-of-dip was compiled at 1:125,000-scale fromstructure contour lines and from dip measurements on 1:24,000-scalepublished geologic maps of the Kaiparowits Plateau. These geologicmaps are referenced in figure 2 of Hettinger and others (1996).The outside polygon defines the base of the coal-bearing John HenryMember of the Straight Cliffs Formation (Upper Cretaceous) east of112 degrees of longitude. The northern boundary is delineated bythe Paunsaugunt fault and volcanic rocks of Tertiary age. The areawithin this polygon...

This is a polygon coverage containing eleven different attributes of information including net coal thickness and estimated coal tonnages in the Calico and A-sequences in the Kaiparowits Plateau study area. This layer was derived from a "union" process, i.e., intersection and overlay of numerous layers and retaining attributes of each. It is the result of computing the geometric intersection of ten polygon coverages using the Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) Arc/Info UNION command, and finally calculating coal tonnage in INFO. Net coal thickness values are from 209 data points and represent all coal beds that are more than 1 foot thick.CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN IN USING THE COAL THICKNESS AND COAL...

This is a polygon coverage of the outcrop of the base of the DripTank Member of the Straight Cliffs Fm. (Upper Cretaceous) east of112 degrees of longitude. The northern boundary is delineated bythe Paunsaugunt fault and volcanic rocks of Tertiary age.

This is a polygon coverage of the outcrop of the base of theWahweap Formation (Upper Cretaceous) east of 112 degrees oflongitude. This polygon also represents undivided Tertiary andCretaceous: Osiris Tuff and Wasatch Fm (Tertiary), Pine HollowFm (Tertiary?), Canaan Peak Fm (Tertiary? and Cretaceous), andKaiparowits and Wahweap Formations (Cretaceous). The northernboundary is delineated by the Paunsaugunt fault and volcanic rocksof Tertiary age.

This is a polygon coverage that represents the extent of thestudy area and is attributed to indicate where the totalcoal-bearing interval is represented and where the entiresection may not be represented in parts of the coal-bearinginterval due to erosion. The extent of the study area is theoutcrop of the Calico Sequence boundary and defines the baseof the coal-bearing John Henry Member of the Straight CliffsFormation east of 112 degrees of longitude. The northernboundary is delineated by the Paunsaugunt fault and volcanicrocks of Tertiary age.

This is a polygon coverage of the outcrop of the Calico Sequenceboundary and defines the base of the coal-bearing John Henry Memberof the Straight Cliffs Formation east of 112 degrees of longitude. This polygon also represents the extent of the study area and isused as the "outside" clipping polygon for the data layersincluding the overburden and isopach coverages. The area withinthis polygon includes parts of the coal-bearing John Henry Memberwhere the entire section may not be represented due to erosion. The northern boundary is delineated by the Paunsaugunt fault andvolcanic rocks of Tertiary age.

This is a coverage that shows areas in the Kaiparowits Plateauwhere geologic conditions in the Calico and A-sequences are morefavorable for current underground mining technology (Hettinger andother, 1996, fig. 22). This coverage contains nine attributes ofinformation. It was compiled by computing the geometricintersection of nine polygon coverages using the ARC/INFO UNIONcommand. This coverage is characterized as being a guide to where the morefavorable coal areas are likely to be for current undergroundmining technology: areas where coal beds in the Calico and A-sequences are greater than 3.5 feet thick, less than 3,000 feetdeep, and inclined by less than 12 degrees. Note: Coal beds lessthan 3.5 feet thick are generally...

This coverage was clipped from the National Federal lands coverage used for the FEDERAL RECREATIONAL LANDS map project. This is a very generalized coverage of land status in Utah used to create a locality map for studies in the Kaiparowits Plateau (Hettinger and others, 1996).The fedlands polygon cover is a digital polygon cover representing Federally controlled parcels with recreational potential containing more than 22,500 acres. Some ACE, BRC and TVA polygons (lakes and reservoirs) actually contain less than 22,500 acres but were included in the polygon cover for cartographic portrayal.

This coverage of land management status (bb_surf) was clipped from theStatewide Utah land ownership coverage for Gap Analysis using a boundingbox that surrounds the Kaiparowits Plateau study area. Laura Biewick,USGS-GD-Central Energy Resource Surveys Team, added item 'SURF' in whichshe consolidated surface ownership from item 'NAMES'. This is in accordancewith a standard attributing scheme developed by the USGS-GD-Central EnergyResource Surveys Team for land status and minerals owned by the Federal Government. The original data and more information on that data can be obtainedfrom: andSome of the following information in this document is from metadatafor the original Utah land ownership coverage that was obtainedfrom...

This is a polygon coverage of the structure contours of the Calicosequence boundary in the Kaiparowits Plateau. Sequence boundaryelevations are based on 166 drill sites. The Calico sequenceboundary occurs from 50-100 ft below the John Henry Member, therefore an inferred elevation of the sequence boundary was usedat numerous locations along the outcrop where the John Henry Memberwas mapped. The outside polygon defines the base of the coal-bearing John HenryMember of the Straight Cliffs Formation east of 112 degrees oflongitude.
