This is a set of scripts developed by Madeline Steele in 2013 as a part of the Arid Lands Initiative (ALI) spatial prioritization analysis. They are provided here both as methodological documentation and because they may be useful for other projects. They are not set up to be imported into an ArcGIS toolbox, and all path names would have to be changed before they could be used. They are commented, and variables should be at the top, but they are probably not very useful without a bit of previous Python experience. Please feel free to use and/or splice and dice these scripts, and contact Madeline if you have any questions. The layers in this map service represent 4 different version of the final ALI Marxan model. Selection frequency layers show how often each hexagon was selected over 100 runs of a specific version. The "Best Solution" is not a perfect solution, but simply the best scoring solution out of 100 runs for each version.

In 2014 and 2015, the Arid Lands Initiative developed “Conservation Scorecards” for their Priority Core Areas (PCAs) and Priority Linkage Areas (PLAs). To create the scorecards, we collected numerous existing geospatial datasets that could help provide decision support for ALI land managers, then summarized them to the geometry of PCAs and PLAs (e.g., took the spatial mean of a Landscape Condition Model). To better understand the analysis, please read the report, “Assessing the Condition and Resilience of Collaborative Conservation Priority Areas in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion,” available here. The PCA scorecards pdfs are attached to the main report as an appendix, and the PLA scorecards are included in a short...

This dataset contains the data described in Looney and Eigenbrode's 2012 Natural Areas journal article (Characteristics and Distribution of Palouse Prairie Remnants: Implications for Conservation Planning), including potential Palouse remnants, a boundary for the study area, and a set of potential remnants that lay outside of the study area. While the potential remnants inside the area were reviewed based on limited ground-truthing described in the article, those outside the area were not. As such, there are likely potential remnants that are in fact re-colonized field margins or drainage ditches, or CRP-like plantings. Since the focus was primarily on eyebrows located in agricultural contexts, many of the river...

This dataset is an extract of the resistance surface created for the Pacific Northwest Duke Climate Resilience Project. It incorporates data on various human activities from the following data sources: National Landcover Dataset, Energy Infrastructure data from the Ventyx Corporation, National Wetlands Inventory, TIGER 2010 Road Data, active railroads and Dave Theobald's housing density dataset developed from 2010 census data. More details on the creation of this surface can be found in the document "Creation of Resistance Surfaces for the Resistant Kernel Pacific Northwest Duke Landscape Resilience Project".

This project is part of a larger effort to design a sustainable landscape for wildlife and ecological systems in the Columbia Plateau ecoregion. Another goal of this effort is to test and describe different approaches to doing “Landscape Conservation Design” (LCD) and working towards articulating a toolkit of approaches for LCD. This report documents a task related to further develop and testing of this toolkit as applied to priority areas in the Columbia Plateau). This project focuses on a rapid assessment method of several potential areas across a large landscape. This assessment project builds from these previous ALI efforts (ALI 2013 and ALI 2014) by providing decision support for strategy development. ...

To support the ALI spatial priorities analysis, the LANDFIRE rasters in this geodatabase were downloaded from http://www.landfire.gov/datatool.php, and clipped to the Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group's (WHCWG) Columbia Plateau (CP) study area, which is the CP ecoregion with a 25km buffer. They were also projected to the HabConnectProjectArea_North_America_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic projection, a custom projection developed by the WHCWG for their CP analysis and also used for the ALI Marxan analysis. The data were downloaded in March 2013. Since then, some (but not all) of these datasets have been updated. The included layers are: - biophysical settings - succession class - existing vegetation...

A download link for the report and its appendices is below ("USFWS 2015 Assessing the Condition and Climate Resilience of Collaborative Conservation Priority Areas in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion.pdf"). For those who don't need the appendices or who have a slow internet connection, a version with the report only is also provided ("USFWS 2015 Report only no appendices.pdf"). The scorecard appendix is also posted separately ("USFWS_2015_Appendix_A_PCA_Scorecards.pdf").Related Documents and Data:A companion report describing the Ecological Integrity Assessment and its results is here. An addendum report with scorecards and CCVA results for the ALI's Priority Linkage Areas (PLAs) is here (the report available on this...

The TIGER/Line Files are shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) that are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line File is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The All Roads Shapefile includes all features within the MTDB Super Class "Road/Path Features" distinguished where the MAF/TIGER Feature Classification Code (MTFCC) for the feature in MTDB tha begin with "S". This includes...

This Esri file geodatabase contains the Arid Lands Initiative’s Priority Core Areas (PCAs) and Priority Linkage Areas (PLAs). For all PCAs and PLAs over 5,000 acres in size, we developed a "scorecard" that presents its rank, relative to the other PLAs, for a range of threats and values. Both the raw, continuous values and the ranks are available in the attributes of these feature classes. Details about each field are provided in the fields metadata section. The citations in the fields metadata can all be found in the references section of the Phase 2 final report, available here. The full report with PCA scorecards is available here, and the addendum report with PLA scorecards is here. Most of the raw input...

After identifying collaborative conservation priority areas (see this report for details), the Arid Lands Initiative needed to assess the relative climate change vulnerability of these areas to better understand what management strategies might be most appropriate in each. This Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment (CCVA) for the ALI’s Priority Core Areas (PCAs) is fully described in this report. An addendum report, here, presents a complementary CCVA that was developed for the ALI’s Priority Linkage Areas (PLAs). PCAs were assessed relative to other PCAs, and PLAs relative to other PLAs, so they both have their own models attached below. Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources. They are designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, management, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components. These general purpose regions are critical for structuring and implementing ecosystem management strategies across federal agencies, state agencies, and nongovernment organizations that are responsible for different types of resources within the same geographical areas. The approach used to compile this map is based on the premise that ecological regions can be identified through the analysis of patterns of biotic and abiotic phenomena, including...

This data set represents the extent, approximate location and type of wetlands and deepwater habitats in the conterminous United States. These data delineate the areal extent of wetlands and surface waters as defined by Cowardin et al. (1979). Certain wetland habitats are excluded from the National mapping program because of the limitations of aerial imagery as the primary data source used to detect wetlands. These habitats include seagrasses or submerged aquatic vegetation that are found in the intertidal and subtidal zones of estuaries and near shore coastal waters. Some deepwater reef communities (coral or tuberficid worm reefs) have also been excluded from the inventory. These habitats, because of their depth,...

This file geodatabase includes the 2013 Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) and the Marxan target rasters that were derived from it. For an explanation of why targets were selected and how they were derived, please refer to the report. The Python scripts used to generate the layers are also available via the GNLCC portal.
